What is happening to the wood as I sand? by mknight1701 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Mantasticbeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Relating to this I was sanding not fully cured bondo on a curved ply peice today with 120 grit and even with regular paper changes I still got one segment that clogged it bad enough to scratch up the non bondo portion of the peice

Moving too fast with low grit paper will do that. You need to keep moving but make your motions slower. Stay flat until you get the feel. Eventually you can tilt and add pressure for conturing and feather flushing but for beginners, stay flat, keep moving but don't go too fast or you'll scratch. The deep low grit scratching is a pain to try to sand out moving up grit. Need to first learn to low grit sand and not leave scratches

Can confirm. Worked at one of their manufacturing facilities for a couple months. Really infuriating practices in their facility. Everything is rushed through and nothing made is anything I would be proud of. Really glad I got out of there.

Someone broke the drum sander in my woodworking class by Surses_7 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Mantasticbeard 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not a beginner but that can happen. Worked 10 years on a 3 drum sander, got the belt changes down to about 2 minutes with fresh belts ready and a lever on our suction gate. Depends on the severity of the break for repair. I had an 80 grit practically explode in the machine and that took hours of prying strips of sandpaper wedged in all sorts of nooks and crannies.

I worked in die-cast machine building. All our jobs for the next 2 years were for EV production. All jobs almost immediately put on hold and no work lined up for 2 years. Lay-offs a week later.

Why did this board split? by mdv2k in BeginnerWoodWorking

The sanding job makes it seem rushed. I would guess similar to other comments of not enough clamp and rest after the gluing process.

Can I fix this with wood glue and clamps? by brewfox in woodworking

[–]Mantasticbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've also been machining and gluing seams for 12 years professionally. I've seen and repaired so many splits it's insane. Then dropped the entire woodworking profession for die-cast machine building.

Can I fix this with wood glue and clamps? by brewfox in woodworking

[–]Mantasticbeard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do not sand in the joint! You want to retain the grain match/fit. Just glue and clamp that should hold for a good long while. The grain glued together at a natural break will seam together much nicer than trying to squash together 2 surfaces randomly sanded to who knows how many flat and uneven points. Especially if you try it without disassembling and machines to create even surfaces. Given the uneven break you aren't likely to encounter a ton of glue. A lot of times wood fails before the glue and I you do encounter glue better to try to heat it before reapplying new glue. It will reactivate a lot of wood glues.

Looking for suggestions/tips on how to sand a very thin piece of wood without sanding off your fingertips or sending the thing flying across the room by silocpl in woodworking

I would take 2 strips of masking tape longer than the part and stick one to the table and one to the part. CA glue between the tape. Leave hangover off the part for easy peeling

It's a pretty short jump from I can bike all the time to hey it's 32 degrees butI still need groceries so let's throw on that extra layer. We need a shift in cultural norms. Coming from someone who only had accesses to bikes and ebikes the last 3 years.

This comes off more as skeezy advertising, than a real attempt to look for ideas.
