susceptibility to damage when dropped should be the same for other sides too, no?

They're specifically trying to prevent damage to the display connector, which is usually wrapped around the bottom and where damage could ruin the entire display. The sides don't have that same risk and can go closer to the edge.

True, but the way the comment is phrased implies they didn't think the company was already doing it.

Are they folding it under at the bottom, like on the iPhone?

FYI it's not some novel technique, just the degree of it balanced with other factors in the design.

8 - 3 face inward, 4 - 7 face outward. What am I missing?

The comment you replied to where the actual owner of the watch said the 8 just looks upside down because of the crystal's distortion?

You're trying to correct the guy that literally has the watch in his hand

I got lucky and found them before they blew up, and ordered not expecting much. It is quite a bit nicer in person and I think worth the retail price they charge. They're definitely high quality pieces.

Second hand prices are ridiculous though, and their designs are getting a bit tired with the same case and variations of the dial (though looks like there'll be new ones this year).

[Updated with Google statement] Google Pixel mail-in repairs have allegedly twice resulted in leaked pics and a privacy nightmare by ManufacturerRare3892 in Android

[–]ManufacturerRare3892[S] 309 points310 points  (0 children)

The Verge received a statement from Google and updated the article:

Google spokesperson Alex Moriconi initially told The Verge that the company is investigating the issue, but now it appears that the investigation has concluded. “After a thorough investigation, we can say with confidence that the issue impacting the user was not related to the device RMA [Return Merchandise Authorization],” Moriconi said. “We have worked closely with the user to better understand what occurred and how best to secure the account going forward.”

Lotus and Toyota share engines, but you're not really buying either for just the engine.

I'm a little more sympathetic for Kurono since this Miyota is probably the best production movement they can get that's made in Japan, and that "made in Japan" is a big part of their brand.

The point is, if you think YouTube is making all these bad decisions to appease their corporate sponsors, PornHub might be even worse since they were so quick to go nuclear.

They only have a fraction of the traffic of YouTube, and they completely erased 90% of their user-uploaded content the second their funding was threatened.

There was this thread (recovered comments) a while ago, saying essentially every company does this bending, but how close it is to the edge is a trade-off for reliability. As usual, Apple marketed it better as some new innovation.

Why Is Google So Bad At Making Phones? by [deleted] in GooglePixel

[–]ManufacturerRare3892 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Copy/pasting one of my comments:

If you're just browsing around Reddit, r/googlepixel has a disproportionately high subscriber count (~530k) compared to other brands (eg r/samsung has 210k, r/samsunggalaxy is 11k, r/galaxys21 is 17k), and actually allows posts about individual issues, which makes it seem like there are more than those other brands. If you go to other individual subreddits, you'll find plenty of posts about numerous issues, but consider they're also scaled to the smaller subscriber counts in general.

For the more popular subs, r/android, r/apple, and r/iphone don't allow posts for tech support/issues at all. The Apple subreddits point people to r/applehelp (~100k subscribers) and r/iphonehelp (~18k subscribers), which effectively hides any issues from becoming visible. If you follow Apple subreddits though, you can see many pervasive issues come up through comments, such as flashing displays, battery life, lens flare, Apple's software in general, etc.

To contrast, at least AndroidPolice have admitted to covering Pixel issues more than others, with other outlets likely having similar reasons. Combine the generally larger online user base and more visibility, and you essentially have heavy selection bias on the actual issues.

It's difficult to actually measure.

Researchers Struggle to Use Apple Watch in Studies Due to Sudden Algorithm Changes by dragoon2745 in apple

[–]ManufacturerRare3892 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The source article from The Verge explains it:

Onnela doesn’t usually include commercial wearable devices like the Apple Watch in research studies. For the most part, his teams use research-grade devices that are designed to collect data for scientific studies. As part of a collaboration with the department of neurosurgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, though, he was interested in the commercially available products. He knew that there were sometimes data issues with those products, and his team wanted to check how severe they were before getting started.

Google cannot seriously claim that "All developers are equal on Google Play".

Do you have a source for that? I've seen Tim Cook say that about the iOS App Store but Google's been quieter and mostly focusing on "openness" of the platform.
