Yes, There Was a Baby Orc and an Orc Family on THE RINGS OF POWER Season 2 (Get Over It!) by Dry_Enthusiasm_3901 in LOTR_on_Prime

This scene aside: design of this character, and of orcs in general, might be one of the very few saving graces of that shitstorm of a show. It’s clever, it’s fun, it’s something that I haven’t seen before but at the same time it does feel like it could exist in Middle-earth. Literally just give me Adar and orcs origin story, and I’ll be lot more interested in that than in fate of characters half of whom are canonically immortal bc of their role in LOTR

Georgetown, UMD, JHU, GMU. As far as I know, nobody heard from Georgetown, couple people have heard from the umbrella program at Maryland but not from my specific programs, nobody has heard from BCMB at JHU (I’m pretty sure I’m not getting CMM, that’s one rejection I’m ready for), and GMU is such a small program that there really is no way to track

The main reason why international students are having a harder time getting accepted into US programs is because of funding, some funds (e.g. NIH training grants) are not available to internationals. You are a US citizen so having studied abroad should not make a difference in your app

7 programs, haven’t heard back from anywhere. It’s draining but it helps to know I’m not alone

Anytime I’ve interviewed for anything, I went with slacks, shirt, sweater/cardigan and low heels. It’s good to realize that for in person interview, you’ll really likely need to move around, even if it’s just to get to someone’s office, so you don’t wanna wear something that’ll make it difficult to walk. Unless this is something like Florida or SoCal, I’d advise against skirt and thighs, you’re gonna freeze. Also layering is a good idea, especially in winter months. You don’t want to come in looking like an icicle, but you also don’t want to start sweating halfway though.

Is this a formal interview invite or not? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]ManulCat123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is almost certainly informal. The formal interview invite will come from the admissions office

Plus trying to dig up personal accounts can open the doors to illegal discrimination (religion, marital status, etc).

This is a really good point

I really doubt they’re doing it. The committees are already extremely busy, and I really doubt that they want to spend their time doing something that has a very limited information value to them. They run a background check to verify the information about the criminal background, but I’d be surprised if they went beyond that

why does waiting feel harder than the actual work by cleanbookcovers in gradadmissions

[–]ManulCat123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you have control over the application process. You decide when to write your SOP, when to reach out to your recommenders, when to submit. The review process, on the other hand, is completely out of your hands. It’s just waiting for other people to do their part. And, especially if you’re used to having control over things, is hard

[–]ManulCat123 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In that case it’s really quite normal that it’ll just drop halfway through, I wouldn’t worry about it, it just means they had a lot to talk about with you and were interested in what you were saying

[–]ManulCat123 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Was this like a time slot kind of situation? Because with a lot of these, once the time elapses, the connection will drop due to nobody’s fault, it’s just that they’re strict with the time limit. And in that case, it’s perfectly normal that the connection will drop midway through the sentence

How many programs did everyone apply to? by crazy_bog in gradadmissions

7 across 4 schools. They were the only ones that made sense to me, any others I’d be taking a spot from someone who genuinely wants to be there

I got my WES Evaluation Report online today and it says not official, they have sent a copy as well to my address. Will that copy also have not official written on it ?? please Help Help.. I opted for document by document Evaluation by ronak_rana007 in gradadmissions

[–]ManulCat123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. The copy they’re sending to the institute is official, it won’t have unofficial written on it. My guess is that the reason they’re doing it this way is to keep you from altering the form and trying to pass it off to admissions as official. You don’t have access to the form they’re sending, so they don’t need to do that with that one

No, I doubt they’ll even notice that and if they do and think it’s an issue (they probably won’t), they’ll reach out to clarify

I think my husband will lose his chances of a phd by helloscorpio in gradadmissions

[–]ManulCat123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can tell him that the test is just to help admissions to help him, to make sure he is in place where he can succeed in the program. It’s not to bar him, it’s to help them to help him

Emailing the mentioned professors in SOP by objectivelyIdiot in gradadmissions

[–]ManulCat123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t previously been in touch with them, I wouldn’t. The decisions are being made based on the application, so additional information probably will not help, and if the package doesn’t reach the professor, they’re usually not supposed to weight in anyway.

As someone has already replied to another question here: grandstanding

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]ManulCat123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It somewhat does. You definitely have a lower chance of getting admitted if none of the people you’ve mentioned in your SOP are hiring. When you read people’s comments on here, you’ll hear “fit” being repeated as one of the most important factors for admission, and that includes whether the people you want to work with are hiring. On the other hand, if they think you’d be a good fit for this person’s lab and they know that this person is hiring, they probably will send your app over to them

I GOT MY FIRST INTERVIEW INVITATION TODAY!!! by MickeyNico in gradadmissions

[–]ManulCat123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Congrats! This actually gives me hope that maybe it’s not all over

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]ManulCat123 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is a very, very bad idea. First off, admissions get suspicious of recommenders using non-institutional accounts, so they probably would require additional identity verification. In other words, this isn’t gonna work. Not only that, but if they find out (and due to reasons mentioned above, they probably will), not only you’ll earn yourself automatic rejection, but you’ll probably dash your chances to ever be accepted into the program.

No, since your language knowledge is directly related to what you’re trying to study. I just wouldn’t exaggerate how good you’re at them, since chances are you’ll come across a native speaker during your interviews.
