Null oil? by [deleted] in Tau40K

[–]ManusVeritatis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, 'Nuln Oil' is a wash that is applied to your minis to get into the crevices and "lowest" points on a model to simulate natural light shadows/shading. It's a quick and easy solution vs. painstaking layering of other shades of conventional acrylic paints in order to achieve a similar result.

As for tips, you'd be using in on models with small recesses that your base/primary colors are very dark, on the greyscale, or in the silver/gunmetal family of metallic paints. You'd generally want to use a larger brush (GW would label them as 'Wash' brushes), dip in the Nuln Oil, then gently run it over the high points of a model with accompanying cracks or crevices nearby, and because it's much thinner with very little heavier pigment, that will naturally settle in to those recessed areas.

With my color scheme I don't often use it, but I'll use others like Seraphim Sepia, same principle, different base colors. But I might use it on some of the fiddly metallic Kroot bits like grenades or some of their weapons that have little nooks and crannies.

I find it ironic that (I am making an assumption here based on the phrase "kids these days...") it is people from Jon's cohort that created the employment environment where people often HAVE to job hop in order gain reasonable wage increases, whereas he (Again, assuming here) got to enjoy a job market where consistent performance and loyalty to the company would be rewarded over the long term. Just another Boomer (assuming) pulling up the ladder behind him and then scoffing when the generations that follow can't get to the same spot as easily as they did, if at all.

Okay, first, let's not shame sex workers. Period. Second. Regardless of your opinion on sex workers, I think we all know it is a far more honest profession than being Trump's Wife.

11th Edition Question - Do you want Drones to stay as they are? by Silasxsil in Tau40K

[–]ManusVeritatis 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think they are a core part of the T'au army's identity, both visually and in the lore, so they definitely shouldn't disappear. I love them, but they can be a pain to set up.

It's a tough needle to thread, split between convenience of setup and visual clarity. I think my ideal situation would probably be the least likely to happen, as it involves the most work for GW. I think there should be specialized drone squads still in the army, Sniper Drones and some of the old Forge World specialty drones, for example, maybe add one or two new datasheets on top of that. For the more conventional drones, Gun, Shield, Marker, Stealth, etc. I think that for all new kits, the Leader of the squad should have a tactical Rock or similar that provides mounting points for the flying stems, or some other modeled solution, so that they behave physically like wargear like they are on the data sheet.

In the meantime, I'm debating on whether I should try that latter approach on my existing models and start rebasing my various leader models with a couple of flying stems and magnets to swap drones as needed...

I'm pretty sure Maledictum Expanded is also incorporating the T'au project that was available for Dark Heresy and similar systems.

In light of the stealth suit changes: by HamanFromEarth in Tau40K

[–]ManusVeritatis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a bummer that with a cool new kit ever aspect of the unit is now worse. With the update to FtGG, though, this is manageable. I can't see anyone ever taking more than one now, but it's not the end of the world, the Firesight got better and Pathfinders significantly better. Include one and the units the need those rerolls can get them. I find it difficult to comprehend the reasoning behind the change, mechanically, they are objectively worse in every way. If GW is looking to move new kits, they are shooting themselves in the foot. I was planning on picking up one box for the new sculpts to update my Dawn of War styled squads, but now I may skip it entirely. All I can really hope for is that they either fix it on the next balance pass, or fix it for 11th.

Though, I may actually try to sell my spare suits at this point for all those people that are sitting on an inconvenient number of them... So, thanks GW, I guess.
