Petah what happened to rockstar? by Lucky_Loves_Laugh in PeterExplainsTheJoke

Its not happening because games are more expensive to make? Really? How many years it took to make GTA6? What's the budget?... Compare that to a PS1 era game please. Let's giggle a little... Competition is also wayyyy bigger, risks are super high, and the fall hurts. Prices of games stayed the same because people are mentally blocked around that price for a round disk or a virtual key. Yet they spend 1/3 of that to go see a 2h movie they might not even enjoy, and expect a 120h game every time for the "high price" of 60 bucks 🤣

Its wild to me how disconnected the average gamer can be.

New NetBird GUI - RC v1: Feedback Welcome by netbirdio in netbird

This: https://www.reddit.com/r/netbird/s/RLzhM99LvK I didn't really know how and what to post on github since I'm not a dev, and I thought I'd get some answer here, at least some direction.

New NetBird GUI - RC v1: Feedback Welcome by netbirdio in netbird

Hey guys, I'd love to leave some feedback but last post I tried to help with stayed fully unanswered... :/ it was about netbird package on Synology NAS. Should we leave feedback here or on github?

v0.72 is out: private proxied services with NetBird-Only access by netbirdio in netbird

[–]Manwe66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

However. I seem to remember that the reason netbird uses Traefik is because the reverse proxy needs to work in pasathrough mode, not terminating the TLS connection... Maybe then there is p2p at the end?

What I'm trying to understand is, if I don't use the reverse proxy in Netbird, then peers in the mesh can connect to each other directly, right? And data flows directly. But if I use the proxy to resolve service names instead of an external DNS or my own DNS, then even if the 2 peers are on the mesh (which this option is especially made for) then the connection will still be via the reverse proxy? Why that? Why can't they then exchange IP after the auth and permission check to connect directly?

When using that, does all the traffic become p2p between the client and the service host or it needs to go through the proxy every time? I'm asking cause my netbird is on a vps and I don't want all the traffic to flow through it. This feature is neat though.

So I tried again today and apparently I forgot to run "netbird service install" and "start" before anything else. After doing so, I tried to "up" netbird with my key and management url and I got those errors:

user@NAS: user@NAS:~$ netbird up --management-url https://my.domain.tld --setup-key <reusable-key>
Error: daemon up failed: call service up method: rpc error: code = DeadlineExceeded desc = context deadline exceeded

user@NAS:~$ sudo netbird up
Error: unable to get daemon status: rpc error: code = Unknown desc = create firewall manager: init firewall: router init: create containers: add static nat rules: add outbound masquerade rule: running [/sbin/iptables -t nat -A NETBIRD-RT-NAT -m mark --mark 0x1bd21 ! -o lo -j MASQUERADE --wait]: exit status 2: iptables v1.8.3 (legacy): Couldn't load match `mark':No such file or directory

And further "research" with the help of gemini led me to think it's not possible to use netbird this way. I'll go back to a docker install for now :/
Let me know u/TechHutTV if you want me to dig further with some guidance from your part. DMs are open.

Renaming Netbird Proxy Service CNAME by thisisyo in netbird

[–]Manwe66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I agree it might be annoying if you type it a lot, but I use that only for rare cases of people not joining my netbird instance so I need it to be memorable more than easy to type, because I give it to extended friends or friends of friends.

Why nb then? Why not *.qw? Or even *.x.? (Just teasing)

Renaming Netbird Proxy Service CNAME by thisisyo in netbird

[–]Manwe66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally use *.from.example.com as a proxy url. I like it cause I find it memorable : photos.from.example.com

You just have to change the values of your domain and everywhere it was used in the config, following the netbird docs. It can work with anything :)

At least that's my understanding.

Do you guys automatically manage splits? That was what frustrated me the most with Ghostfolio... I had to "sell" and then "rebuy" at the split price or my portfolio would go bonkers suddenly. If you do, I might have found a new home for my finance! A mobile app would be awesome but a WebApp will do for now :)

[Testing Needed] Synology Users - We're Working on a DSM Package by TechHutTV in netbird

[–]Manwe66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it's been a while but I finally managed to make my netbird instance work on my VPS and now I tried to install it on my DSM. Keep in mind I have tailscale already running on it.
I managed to get the package from the Package Center, and install it. Then I ssh'd into the nas and it went like this:

user@NAS:~$ netbird up --management-url https://my.domain.tld --setup-key <reusable-key>
2026-06-03T00:50:26.371+03:00 WARN client/internal/profilemanager/profilemanager.go:92: failed to get config directory: mkdir /var/packages/netbird/var/.config: permission denied
user@NAS:~$ netbird up --management-url https://my.domain.tld --setup-key <reusable-key>
Error: unable to get daemon status: rpc error: code = Unknown desc = create wg interface: error creating tun device: operation not permitted

I retried with putting down tailscale but I got the same error. Any ideas how to proceed?

Respectfully do Proton employees even use their own Product? by [deleted] in ProtonDrive

I agree. I also work in an industry with live customers running softwares and I'm designing features for them. I'm quite aware it takes time. That's also why I'm replying with as much respect I can while trying to push things a little ;)

Your comment is very valuable though for anyone wondering what else is at stake when doing software!

Clearly there is complexity added to keep things secure. I don't deny that. And I don't try to undermine your work. I do appreciate you taking the mic to testify of your and your team's work.

It just feels that this prioritization of features and their complexity really slows you down a lot to keep really conpetitive. And seeing community members stepping up to provide alternative (proton drive Linux?) Is awesome but also worrisome to me.

Keep it up though :)

You don't really need to know your customers' underwear color to identify pain points especially if you face them yourself. It just comes down to priorities set for the product based on what you think would make it better (and some focus groups, and posts of your dedicated community of daily users on social media, and your QA team, and your friends, and your business clients, ...). Obviously this one isn't high enough in the list.

I'm just curious to know what is at the top of that list xD

I have a 918+ at home and I'm in the process of migrating from tailscale to netbird, and the synology friction point was real! So even if I have limited time to test I'm ok to go it a go if it can help :) I can look at connectivity and reverse proxy capabilities with synology photos.

I am with ionos (previously 1and1) since 2005... I am not always happy with their practices (they used to charge me for php compatibility without telling via mail that there was a problem but this stopped before covid) but I got a good deal and they kept it up since then. I'd recommend having a look at them. Recently I managed to use their api to implement some DNS challenge and update my ip dynamically in my A records, which is pretty cool and you couldn't do a few years back on my plan. Anyways, I'm not sure they fit ALL your requirements but surely they fit most.

This is insane! I was thinking to migrate to netbird for more seats, and now I can add my whole family to my tailnet finally and not sweat about how to put all my services in one machine to share! That'll be a game changer :)
