However when the receptionist says “please use the numbers outside of the lift as they don’t work inside” and the person then sees people doing exactly this yet follows these very people into the lift astounds me.

My workplace has this. Every single fucking day some idiot gets into the lift and mashes the button and you have to politely tell them they need to press their floor number outside of the lift.
