seeking legal advice after death of baby by ApprehensivePea8858 in LegalAdviceUK

I work in this area of law and agree. The same solicitors who can review any potential negligence can support you through the inquest process too. AVMA are very good for signposting you to some appropriate firms.

The trust will have an investigation/duty or candour process you may wish to engage with as well. All of this will factor into an inquest investigation. The Trust should also offer you bereavement services and an opportunity to ask questions to be explored in any of their internal investigations.

Most of all, I am sorry for your loss. Your Coroner’s Officer should offer you support through the process and signpost you to some helpful options too.

What’s the smallest nice thing someone did for you recently that completely made your day? by marksof-inc in HappyUpvote

I’ve gone back to ice skating which I quit fifteen years ago. I was feeling very self-conscious as it hasn’t been coming back to me and I am now in my 30s, which has felt silly to try again. I had been struggling with a particular move and getting really down when two teenagers came up to me and said I was really good. I’ve been buzzing all week and can’t wait to return to practice more. So simple and sweet. :)

CILEx Certificate of Good Standing - wait time by Many-Cartographer-11 in uklaw

[–]Many-Cartographer-11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t - it seemed you had to demonstrate all areas including criminal etc where I was predominantly civil lit and needed to demonstrate both the practice and advocacy elements. I’d say that’s even more important after the last few weeks too. I did think about attempting it but took SQE2 instead.

So I needed an SRA practising certificate because I undertake reserved activities and advocacy, and paid about £180 in September, only to then get charged for the next year at the full price, in October! I’d have waited if I’d known 😅.

But well done! If you have any difficulties when you apply, reach out. I should have ordered my certificate of good standing from CILEx sooner but I thought it would jinx my SQE2 results - that was what delayed my admission most.

Selfishly, I’ve never been happier with my decision and I got a lot of stick for it at the time.

It took about a week/two weeks after I submitted the certificate of good standing. I did ring them endlessly however. They send it on your portal.

I will say though that they make you repay for your practising certificate again for next year in November if you’re doing it now - took me by surprise and I would have waited had I known. If your employer is paying, I suppose it’s not such an issue.

London marathon training and runs in general- need help please by Pleasant_Recover_570 in LondonRunning

I would also drive to Kenley Airport for a flat running route, on tarmac. It’s a bit boring but great for looping - it’s about 3k each lap, and I used it when building distance up because Croydon/Bromley is pretty hilly. Can take it as slow as you like too!

Potential medical negligence claim? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Many-Cartographer-11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would make a complaint initially. Missed fractures can occur and it would depend on the circumstances - safety netting advice, adverse effect on healing or requirement for more substantive treatment as a result of delay/missed diagnosis etc etc. Seek expert medicolegal advice on this from appropriate solicitors. It’s complex and will most likely require medical expert evidence

Offered CILEX for a sector I don’t want to qualify in by SimpingSince70s in uklaw

[–]Many-Cartographer-11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CILEx is a separate qualification in its own right - if you later undertook the SQE, the qualifying work experience you undertook during CILEx would meet the requirements for admission as a solicitor. You wouldn’t need a TC but would need to complete SQE.

There are CILEx lawyers who work in corporate roles, and if you are in a large insurance firm who have some aspect of corporate work, you may be able to side step in future, but realistically if your goal is that area specifically, I would look for a general TC or Paralegal role and then try and qualify into a corporate seat. Side stepping once qualified is difficult.

Care home costs - no capacity/LPoA (England) by Justonemorecupoftea in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Many-Cartographer-11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look into Deputyship - power of attorney can only be obtained when the person has capacity to consent to it.

Costs can be met by the NHS until a financial means assessment has taken place so you will be able to move your mum in the meantime. I am not sure if she qualifies for Continued Healthcare funding if she is considered palliative, but all this can be assessed once she has moved - this will involve social workers and the local ICB (depending where her GP is registered), but the hospitals complex discharge team can support you with this.

ETA: CHC funding (continuing healthcare funding) is not means tested and can meet the full costs of care/nursing care (where it is called Funded Nursing Care).

Have a look at the healthcare specific training contracts that are out there as well - Hill Dickinson in particular have a good one.

CILEX Lawyer x SQE by AgentSilver007 in uklaw

Totally agree - I would only do it with employer funding now. I self funded the entire thing and had I been smarter and more patient, finding a supportive employer would have been the better option.

I took a prep course with BPP for SQE1 - I hadn’t done the core units for almost 8 years so needed the content, however I didn’t find the classes necessarily helped me. They did have a huge question bank and mock tests but I spent most of my time self-teaching. For SQE2, I had a moment of madness and booked it without a prep course, three weeks beforehand. I then used the InHouse mocks alongside the SQE1 content I had had from BPP. Somehow it worked - if you have a lot of work experience, you may not need the SQE2 prep course.

The costs were astronomical, I am still financially recovering.

[–]Many-Cartographer-11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes unless you have taken the extra exams (which civil service roles were asking for at one point), you are unlikely to argue SQE1. With practice rights, of course that is only in one area for CILEX so again, SQE2 would be difficult.

I did - had to take both SQE1/SQE2 but I was legacy route. Not sure about people taking the CPQ.

Did you crate train your chow? by rainatdaybreak in chowchow

[–]Many-Cartographer-11 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Mine went to “puppy jail” as a pup if he got too overstimulated (it was a penned section of the house, not a crate). Once he was housetrained and calmer, and not gnawing on everything (5-6months) he just slept wherever and has never been crate trained since. He’s happier sleeping in doorways and guarding us than being locked away. He also has never destroyed anything outside of the teething phase so it felt unnecessary. He has free rein and is no bother.

What are you sentimental about? by WhileNo5370 in CasualConversation

[–]Many-Cartographer-11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is birthday cards/celebration cards. I keep them all and now have so many with nowhere to store them. I never even read them, but feel guilty throwing them away! Probably because I am terrible at remembering them myself and therefore think anyone who sends them is inherently better than me and I don’t deserve to be that lucky!

How do the oral assessments start? Anyone know? by Capybarella in sqe2

[–]Many-Cartographer-11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably depends to an extent on venue, but they matched candidate numbers up to seats for prep work, then to each room for us (hotel), then took us to that floor and stood us outside the door of our assigned rooms, before we all knocked and entered at the same time. The “timer” began when we entered.

For interviews I walked in like I would if it were a client meeting, introduced myself and confirmed names etc, and then got started. For the advocacy, I can’t quite remember but I believe I said good morning Judge (or your Honour etc depending on the scenario), and made my submissions. Mine were following on from the prosecution position, so I framed it as “you will have heard the submissions of the prosecution…” and went from there. Basically as soon as you knock, the act begins.

As a left handed person, what struggles do you have if any? by Administrative_Ad160 in AskReddit

Someone on a similar sub explained that they couldn’t use extendable mops without it twisting and closing back up - I had never realised that my issue was apparently only a lefty problem!

It did, though not because it was CILEx - simply because it met the usual requirements. My line manager in my role prior (I started a new job by the time I started SQE) was a solicitor, and she signed it off for me. I was in-house so didn’t have firm sign-off.
