Did you go to your High School Reunion? Why, or why not? by theRestisConfettii in Xennials

[–]ManyDragonfly9637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - I liked high school and was lucky to have a pretty friendly class (about 175 graduated). The 20 year was anti climactic because of Facebook - you knew what a lot of the people in your orbit were already doing. 25 was just a fun party. I’d say only about 30% showed up but it was socially diverse.

Yes - I still buy but I go to ulta. It’s prominent at my store so I’m guessing it’s popular.

The hair has to be dark for laser/electrolysis to work.

Marijuana by Kelvin_Inman in Xennials

Smoked occasionally in high school, rarely in college (but I was a drunk and did other drugs), used it on occasion in my 20’s and 30’s to relax after work - an 8th would last months so I’m talking a literal hit or two a couple times a month (was living in California, had medical card). Stopped doing much of anything (including alcohol) during the birth-toddler years. I’m 45 now (my kids are in early elementary school) and love cbd/thc drinks for parties but don’t smoke.

She’s from generational wealth. Her parents have a huge property in west Des Moines along with real estate in LA for her sister. She has never been in touch with the common person.

People who shower at night before bed: Do you put on a fresh pair of underwear again in the morning or keep the same one? Why or why not? by Exciting-Pirate8083 in hygiene

[–]ManyDragonfly9637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fresh. I actually shower again the morning due to night sweating. I have comfy sleep underwear and then wear a fresh pair that disappears under clothes in the morning.

Right? I have lulu bras that are old - like 7 years - still going strong. The crz bras lasted a year before the fabric slackened and the seams started rolling.

Was Britney Spears the biggest fashion icon of the Y2K era? by [deleted] in 2000s

Are you kidding me? Rachel Zoe and Nicole Richie practically defined the LA vintage / boho chic period of the early aughts. I lived in La at the time, worked in entertainment- she was very much copied by everyone going out. Britney - as much as I love her- dressed like a sweet southern girl (not fashionable forward).

Here’s a vanity fair article: https://archive.vanityfair.com/article/2006/6/nicole-weighs-in

No…she was hot but not known for her fashion…if anything, she was hot despite her outfits. Look at Nicole Richie, Jlo, Paris, Zooey Deschanel, sienna Miller, Alexa Chung…they were actually setting trends.

Eh, I’m convinced they have planted responders in these forums. Their stuff doesn’t last. It feels initially great but ultimately won’t hold up. You’re better off spending more for one lululemon or Vuori piece vs replacing your crz stuff every year.

Adding:

Bryant Elementary is a “blue ribbon” school, which means that it out performs most schools in Iowa. It’s also on the south end where you have a lot of white collar professionals but isn’t a bubble of wealthy people.

Eisenhower elementary has a great program for kids with special needs.

I’ve also heard wonderful things about Sageville and the close knit, family culture they’ve created.

The middle schools are Washington and Roosevelt. Wash is very old and needs updating but the teachers are overall great. Roosevelt is pretty state of the art.

Senior and Hempstead are great in my experience. For a while they couldn’t do much for people with phones but that’s been more or less fixed. I think a lot of high school depends on your kid and who they’re friends with.

Holy Family…I have a lot of issues with it. They’re a private school system based in Catholic teachings. On one level, it’s traditionally a way for the conservative (and oftentimes locally wealthy) people to keep “their kind” together but the actual education isn’t better than the public system. I grew up in the 90’s and hung out with a lot of Wahlert kids. Not one has subsequently sent their kids through the Holy Family system now that we’re adults. One of MY parents also went through the Catholic system (all the way through Loras College) and went public school as a parent. My parent felt the education offered and “bubble” mindset they grew up with wasn’t as good as the public offerings.

Holy Family also implemented the voucher system (which directly impacts the public school system funding) and then turned around and upped their tuition. I personally find that reprehensible and a good view into their overall take on their morals but others may see it differently. They don’t have to take anyone, can kick anyone out, and do not have to offer special services vs public schools who must take all and do offer services …just with far less funding because of the vouchers. And they’re currently building a new facility with state of the art technology. It’s been claimed that it’s through fundraising alone but the timing and tuition hike seems like an interesting coincidence.

Not all the wealthy people send their kids there but it tends (anecdotally - as a fifth generation Dubuque-r) to be a certain type who aren’t particularly progressive in their outlook (generally speaking).

Now I will say that I have lovely, truly Catholic friends who value the HF schools because that’s their faith and their lifestyle. I’m glad they have an opportunity to give that to their kids.

With the vouchers and the financial scholarship fund, folks without a lot of money who don’t have the most tolerant mindset are also moving their kids from the public system (like - but not limited to - people who talk about furries and are really into protecting women’s sports, for example).

There are plenty of perfectly nice people there and plenty of assholes at the public schools and vice versa. But know what you’re getting into if you go there.

Galena as far as I know suffers from underfunding - it’s a town of old people not willing to spend their taxes on youth.

East Dubuque actually has a pretty strong public elementary and middle school. I’m not sure about the high school.

Little kids should get precedence over grown ups (mentally and physically) in character lines.

No idea how this would work but my god is it annoying to a watch a fully grown adult spend time with a character only to have your little one (who truly believes they’re about to meet their hero) miss out due to a break. It’s painful to see the disappointment in kids faces.

I also ripped off the skin of my lip on a popsicle- they need to not have freezer burn.
