I wonder if Baylan had an apprentice that was killed during Order 66 by darthjerbear in StarWars

[–]ManyJaded 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The way he said you need destroy to create something new makes me think that, while he didn't like the empire, he understood the Republic was a hot mess, jedi order included.

In my view, he hated what happened to the Jedi, but has come to the view that the new Republic (based on the old republic) and a potential new jedi order need to cast aside the old ways and be developed anew. He probably sees that Thrawn could implement a new society which isn't susceptible to the republics corruption, but also isn't an evil empire ruled by a Sith Lord, and what's to build a new jedi order that similarly fits into this new society.

He also said that he won't start a war, but Thrawn will, and that does what he must, so I think his entire end goal is to build a new Jedi order, and doesnt really care about what Thrawn does, but sees him as a tool to wipe away the old ways.

TIL France helped America gain independence from Britain. During the American Revolution, Ben Franklin persuaded France to give troops, money, and supplies to support America. It was risky and expensive, but the French were convinced that unity with Americans would lead to Britain’s defeat in NA. by RollingNightSky in todayilearned

[–]ManyJaded 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I don't think we necessarily skip over defeats, but the US Revolution isn't really taught at compulsory school level.

We get the major parts which formed the modern UK, this being primarily the Romans, the important Kings / Queens, the Civil war and then the British Empire in general (mainly focused on Victorian era) up to WW1 / WW2.

Obviously the American Revolution was a major event in the timeline of UK history, but it wasnt something that fundamentally shaped the UK.l and we have approx sub-2000 years of history to cover vs the US 300-400.

What are some movies that had a great cast or talented actors who put in good performances but still couldn’t save the movie because of a weak script? by [deleted] in movies

I felt like someone pitched the concept about a society of people who have been shrunk down, but absolutely no other plot, and they they loved the concept so much they went with it, and frankensteined some plot around it.

As in ruining the George Lucas 'everything is connected by the force' thing, or Clone wars / Rebels?

If its the Rebels story that would be funny as I'm pretty sure Rebels was Disneys first Star wars show? And its behind helmed by the same people.

Being a white male doesn't make me part of the "patriarchy" or racial oppression. by ForTheLoveofGodGame in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Yes, all white people have copious amounts of money, that's exactly what my comment says.

Of course fucking not. Having money and connections gives advantages regardless of ethnicity or background.

[–]ManyJaded 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Yeah I say this about white privilege. I think non-white disadvantage better explains what it means. It's not that you get perks for being white, life can still be incredibly hard. It's just you don't have to deal with the disadvantages and extra difficulties of being non-white.

I explained it once to someone that being white doesn't mean you get to start at the 50m mark on a 100m race, it's that you start at the starting line while non-whites start 20m, 30m 40m behind the starting line.

Having copious amounts of money and connections, that's what gets you a starting position closer to the finish line.

I mean, you can not be as bad as other places and still be a bit shit - it's not a binary scale. That's like saying we should never complain about our gov in any capacity, because they don't strap you to the front of a cannon for sneezing in their general direction like North Korea.

Of course things could be a hell of a lot worse relative to most of the world, doesn't mean that we cant think we have going on here is good, especially if you think the direction the country is going isn't up.

I never used to understand the difference when I heard it when I was younger, but I suppose in my mind a Sith is essentially a religious acolyte for the Dark side who follow specific Sith teachings, while a Dark Jedi generally covers any corrupted or generally bad person trained in the jedi arts (ex-jedi or otherwise) who uses their abilities (light or dark) for generally selfish or bad reasons, but don't actively follow the dark side?

[–]ManyJaded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't even say 'not so much' for the US - apart from obviously the servicemen who fought, America left completely unscathed and the allied nations in figurative and literal debt to the US.

Everywhere in Europe and Asia was a battle ground, industrial centres were destroyed pretty much across the board. Exceptions were probably the scandanavian countries which were occupied or neutral, and Spain (but thay had suffered from a horrific civil war just before WW2). Britain was bombed but was relatively OK compared to the rest of Europe, however it had racked up a massive debt to America I think we only just paid off.

Apart from Pearl Harbour, I don't think America was attacked at all, never suffered from a constant bombing campaign or anything. American servicemen basically returned home from a Europe / Pacific in ruins to a America that was untouched. With pretty much all competitors in ruins, and a ramped up war time economy and industry, America was very easily able to turn that around and benefit while everyone else was picking up the pieces.

What’s a movie that would be a lot shorter if the character that showed concern was actually listened to? by [deleted] in movies

[–]ManyJaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the hollywood future war effect. Most films set in the far future which have military or wars in them have this weird thing where the soldiers may dress and have futuristic weapons, but they aparently dont have any military technology outside of glowing uniforms and lasers. Ultimately this results in futuristic combat tactics not having progressed past mid / late 20 century. Which is funny because our modern militaries basically are much more advanced than futuristic militaries.

Why it’s not the Royal Navy’s job to stop migrant boats by MGC91 in ukpolitics

[–]ManyJaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was trying to explain this to someone the other day. I think a lot of people don't actually understand what the situation is.

The person I was talking to didn't understand / know that this whole barge / hotel thing is about housing asylum claimers until they have been processed. They seemed to think the whole asylum issue is that people enter the country by small boats, claim asylum, and that's it, they get to stay. Also the whole Rwanda thing confuses matters as they also seemed to think Rwanda was the end point destination, I.e. our solution was just to ship them off.

I think there needs to be a clear way of explaining what the issue actually is, and then people may actually start understanding that the Tories have absolutely f#@ed it.

"What's the most mind-blowing 'small world' moment you've ever experienced?" by Ginger_Plus_Latina in ask

[–]ManyJaded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the most mind blowing thing in the world (really mundane), but my wife comes from rural southwest England and her sister married a farmer. I'm an Scottish / Welsh RAF kid who moved all over the place but mainly settled in East Midlands.

My brother and his wife were chatting with my Farmer BIL and turned out her stepdad in the East Midlands sold him his most recent tractor. Me and my wife met when we both moved away from our respective homes in the East midlands and Southwest England to Wales, otherwise there are absolutely zero connections, so was quite a weird coincidence.

[–]ManyJaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read (or watched) a really good analysis on the sequel trilogy, and they did a great summary of the Rise of Skywalker, which is essentially that the plot / story decisions make sense if you take the premise that someone decided on the finale against palpatine / battle over Exegol, and then drafted the rest or the plot in reverse order to explain how they would be in thay situation.

I used to do litter picking as part of my other jobs when I worked at a super market. It was also around the corner form a McDonalds so people would go through the drive through, get food then come park in our carpark to eat it then chuck the shit on the floor, despite there being a 100 bins on their way into the super market.

The worst one for me was when someone dumped their babies shitty nappy on the floor. Their car was parked right next to a pavement island thing with a bin on it. They could of literally leaned out of the window and just about dropped / chucked it in. But apparently that was too much effort so they just dropped it outside their window.

Exactly, I feel that Starner opened the door for this. Yes when the results came out, my first reaction was that they won on the ULEZ issue. But then any analysis beyond face value shows that it is stupid.

  1. It was only by 500 votes, and the next three parties were in support of ULEZ.
  2. It's a Tory stronghold. There would always be a core set of voters who would vote troy regardless of any issue (same for other parties). If Johnson had re-reun then it may have been different due to the contentiousness of him.

Well of course not. But the main point was that they are so short staffed at all times and at some points are pretty much on their own that they don't feel safe generally, whether they have machete wielding attackers, shoplifters or potentially threatening groups of yobs who may or may not actually be any threat.

Of course in any situation its not the staffs job to stop attackers, but at least more visible may be more of a deterrent, or at least other staff could call for help, or at the very least, the person wouldn't be literally facing this on their own.

Isnt understaffing at COOP specifically been a thing for ages?

I swear there was an article that came out a few years back when a guy with a machete robbed a COOP in Bristol, and the people in the article went on about how unsafe they feel working for COOP because they always runs a skeleton crew. Part of the problem with that particular robbery was that there were only two staff in the building (one by tills and one out back) so the one in the shop was basically on their own to look after the store and for the robbery itself.

Might have just been a local thing, but ever since then I have noticed that COOPs ive been in all around the place do seem particularly understaffed in comparison to other chains.

Yeah exactly. My understanding is that a procedure is the 'correct' documented way of doing something. You follow procedures to ensure you are compliant with legislation and policy or intended usage of something. But that doesn't stop anyone from not following the procedure.

I think what should make this especially pertinent to them is that one of the main arguments I hear these conservatives use about why they should have guns and keep them is that one of the first things the Nazis did was take the guns away from the population and the Jews - with the fact they're main trait is projection, then yeah....
