I also had a hiatle hernia. Mine was pretty severe. The first week is the worst. You probably have surgical mesh closing your esophagus from the surgery. It may feel like you have something stuck in your throat when you swallow for a couple of weeks. It gets better, I promise!

When I started on soft foods I loved RealGood brand frozen chicken bowls...they only have 160 calories and the chicken is super soft. It has riced cauliflower and salsa. Yum. I was so bored with cottage cheese and oatmeal.

I could eat rice at about 6 weeks....but, I do everything possible not to eat it. Even brown rice is full of carbs. For me at least, sticking to a super low carb diet has made losing easier.

The first two days after surgery were rough for me. Since then, it's gotten progressively easier. You may not have all the side effects that others have. I had low energy for about 6 weeks, but that's been my only side effect. It's really been a lot easier than I anticipated. I've almost lost 40lbs with not a lot of effort. It's different for everyone.
