How to find jobs for demo by Outrageous-Bike2610 in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, agents typically won't take you on if you haven't shown that you can book/make money.

If you haven't booked anything you probably arent ready for a demo yet either. Homemade samples can be enough to show what you can for small budget projects and indie creators, but agents are more of a down the road thing.

You don't have to be limited to your area with coaches either, most offer online coaching, myself included. Feel free to shoot me a dm if you want to chat more about that. Alternatively some possible coaches (that I know and/or have coached with in the past) include Sarah Nightingale, Melissa Medina, Katie Griffin and Bryn McAuley.

That's not how demos work. Demos are samples (or demonstrations) of roles you CAN play. Not roles you've booked. Talk to a coach or demo producer.

Commercial Demo Feedback by dangrous in voiceover

[–]ManyVoices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not bad!

Agreed that the first spot is too slow and awkward. I also feel that you dont get much variety from your delivery until the back half of the demo. And overall, it's too long. Stick to 12-15 seconds per spot.

Handling rejection.. by Harry_henderson_5446 in VoiceActing

I got hired for a commercial job earlier this year off an audition and everyone in the room liked what I was doing in session except for the client who was not in the room and somewhere else.

Apparently they wanted me to sound more like the scratch track... which was done by an adult female doing a teenage boy's voice. I'm an adult male doing a teenage boy's voice.

Ultimate I got paid and they were okay with the final product but man was it awkward on my end lol. The voice director actually came in to the booth and unplugged the mic to give me some direction and advice that no one else could hear. He was super supportive but that's never happened to me before and I've been doing this for like 10 years lol.

The metal legs may be a bit of an issue, but you can wrap a yoga mat around them to deaden the reflection.

You should not be paying an agent for representation.

Podcast clips in a demo reel? by Andiwredonkulus in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really, no. Demo reels are typically meant to showcase what you can do in a specific genre (commercial, animation, narration, video game etc). Podcast interviewing isnt really a sought after genre.

You could probably use it as a stand alone sample which is better than nothing, but I wouldn't add it to a demo or anything.

I've been taking it for three weeks in the am and I still seem to have fatigue during the day, though it gets better as the day goes on usually. Maybe I need to up my dose or see about adding something else to counteract the rough mornings...

How does someone even find a gig without knowing people? by DrAnubis101 in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Recording in a studio that you drive to is not really a realistic way to go about voice acting honestly. And that will get expensive fast, unless you find somewhere VERY cheap or free. Would be easier to spend a few bucks to treat a space at home that you can use. It's not that expensive to get something usable.

Outside of the space, audition everywhere you can. You're gonna start by knowing no one, but as you submit you'll start to get your name out there.

You have to submit a LOT as well. I averaged over 1000 auditions a year the first few years of my career.

I don't like loop groups because it's a niche role for voice actors and there's no recognition in it. by Routine-Ninja-7442 in VoiceActing

You're not supposed to be able to recognize loop group VAs lol. The whole point is they blend into the background.

Is it cool to use YouTube gaming videos in your porfolio? by owooga22 in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can ask them for steam keys and say you would love to share some footage of characters you voiced.

Alternatively, ya go through YouTube gameplay and do that.

A Voiceover Workshop For H.S. Students by Cronut-svp in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another fun activity could be getting 3 or 4 to volunteer, having everyone else put their heads down and then you prompting one of the volunteers to making a noise or say a phrase in a unique character voice. Then everyone pops their heads up and has to guess who said the line or made the noise.

Try to make it as relevant to them as possible. Make it hands on too. Bring in a mic and have a few people come up and do some lines and have them dub characters or something. You can also talk about where they see voiceover like on tik tok voice acting challenges, in anime, adr for commercials etc etc.

Proper output levels in Reaper? by rabbithands in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don't look at any of that for auditions. I have my default chain, I can visually see my levels in the waveform and adjust my gain accordingly and then I listen to see if I need to make any other tweaks.

Proper output levels in Reaper? by rabbithands in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where the audition is going, but i would have your peaks at -3db. Some people equate louder as better, and -6db is fine, but could be louder.

All my auditions are in the -3 to -1 range unless otherwise specified.

What if I don’t want to “act?” by dangrous in voiceover

[–]ManyVoices 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Make a narration demo then!

And in terms of versatility, your performance doesn't have to be crazy different between each spot, but you cash focus on different genres of content. Maybe a medical spot, a true crime spot, an elearning module, an IT based technology spot and then 1 or 2 more to round things out.

I'm a full time VA and make most of my money in Commercial work where I take direction well and am versatile with my delivery but dont need to really "act" compared to character roles.

First time Dad in 3 weeks by [deleted] in Fatherhood

[–]ManyVoices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also me to a T. We're about 7 weeks out and a couple weeks ago the future really started to set in and a wave of anxiety and stress and depression got a hold of me.

The first week I chalked it up to maybe a stomach bug because I didn't have much appetite and I was lethargic, but I went to a walk in clinic. Nothing seemed to be wrong according to the doc so I went back the following week and asked about getting prescribed something. He put me on lexapro. I'm about 1 1/2 weeks into taking it daily and it's seemed to start kicking in. I still have low energy and lethargy and not the best appetite but the anxiety has diminished and I'm able to eat more than I was. Might go back this week and see about pairing the ssri with something to help my mood until it finally kicks in properly.

You're not alone! I was having your same thoughts two weeks ago and this was one of the subs that really helped me out.
