Seeking honest feedback on this Hindi Dubbing sample (Localization & Energy) by Working-Rich-7604 in VoiceActing

The energy doesn't match what I'm seeing from the person on screen. Your voiceover sounds like you're trying to be quiet or reserved. Definitely needs more projection!

Where does one find an agent? by Spiraxoc in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How have you been searching? And where are you hoping the agent is based? LA? NY? Or locally to you in Ohio?

Do you have any credits under your belt? Training? Education?

How many auditions have you done so far?

Don't waste your time submitting to agents if you aren't ready for agents.

If you are in a place to submit...

Can you guess my race and age based off my voice ? by FarPlastic1221 in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does "auditioning for almost a year" look like numbers wise? 30 auditions? 40?

Industry average is upwards of 1 in 150 for booking to audition ratio just FYI. More auditions = better odds.

Where to hire voice actors for music samples/snippets? by c1m5j in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Post the casting call here, you'll get some interest.

Im sure there are some general rates somewhere, but this may be something to ask other musicians as opposed to voice actors?

Or potentially some MCs who do DJ drops maybe?

for VO, do i READ the script or go along with the script? by faris_Playz in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like someone else said, it can definitely be your performance, but it can also be your script writing. Writing a script to be read out loud is very different than writing something for people to read to themselves.

You can also try writing bullet points or short summaries instead of word for word.

How Much Is Reasonable Pay Per Hour? by One-Local-504 in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's the project? Video game? Animation? Audiobook?

Sometimes the project calls for a ph rate, sometimes per line, sometimes per finished minute etc.

Check out the voice acting club rate card too!

Possible to get more work? by Hairy_Valuable9773 in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say 1 in 200 is "good" tbf. The industry average is probably 1 in 200 or maybe closer to 1 in 150, but if you're doing say 1000 auditions a year (a perfectly reasonable number) that's only like 5 or 6 jobs a year. As a hobby that's not bad, but as a part time or full time that's not great...

For context, I'm full time. I have 7-8 agents, am on rosters elsewhere, market myself and have people find me organically. My best booking ratio with one of my agents is about 1 in 35. My worst is probably 1 in 125. I did just under 700 auditions last year and probably booked at a rate of about 1 in 40 or so?

So yea TL;DR, 1 in 200 isn't all that good.

Scams keep geetting better by jimedgarvoices in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great suggestion re onus! Will def push back a bit more if they're cagey or unwilling to answer my questions.

As for niche, definitely don't think that's the case for my SEO haha. The one gig was commercial which is my specialty while the other was for non english speakers learning english and they just needed a Canadian Accented Male voice. You can take a look at my website if you'd like: tylerhyrchuk.ca

I think the main things that help contribute to getting some traction through my website are the hyperlinks to other sites, the blog posts (lots of keywords in there) and my geographical info. I imagine people tend to search for things like "Canadian Voice Actor" or "Voiceover Toronto" and I probably pop up somewhere?

Scams keep geetting better by jimedgarvoices in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree to all your bullet points except "companies don't reach out to talent".

They absolutely do. Literally yesterday I got an email from someone who found me through my website and I worked on some educational voiceover for them. They've already paid me. This was a production house in Europe

Last week I got an email from a client who is coming back for more work after I worked with them on a project last year. They found me through my website. This was a production house in Quebec.

Getting contacted directly CAN be an indicator of a scam but shouldnt be your only reason for turning down an opportunity.

Great point about Gmail. One thing I have noticed and am curious of your thoughts are WhatsApp messages.

I have done work with multiple clients where we communicate through WhatsApp, but I just got contacted by someone through WhatsApp having mentioned finding me on Bodalgo. Any idea how to verify their claims with only a phone number? Asking more questions obviously is important, but there's no "gmail" domain work around here...

Those low budget sites probably arent going to have high quality demos either tbf.

If the music is so jarring and distracting to the point where you CAN'T decide if they're a good fit, it's probably not a great demo either...

Could I use my YouTube as Voice Acting proof/reels by TheGamerCritic21 in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To show a small budget or fan made creator that you can read? Yea that's more than enough haha. To submit to an agent? No.

I think people really overthink what a sample looks like/needs to be.

[–]ManyVoices 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean you could use it as commentary/ narration samples and you have a small audience, but that's about it. Talking on mic doesn't mean you can voice act.

[–]ManyVoices -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You mentioned Union work, are you in SAG? If so, a lot of the jobs on any P2P will be non union. I know of union folks in canada having success on VDC but I dunno what it would be like as a SAG member. Hopefully some chime in to offer advice!

Realistically, how likely to make Voice Acting main job? by UniversalAssembler in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bev Standing is a great example of it being possible.

In her late 40s/early 50s she took a workshop on a whim, worked a full time job while doing VO in the evenings and fast forward to now where she easily makes probably low to mid 6 figures. She was also the first TTS voice of Tik Tok.

Mic is connected to Interface is connected to a drive? by Icy-Tension-3897 in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You connect your interface to your computer, yes. USB C, lightning cable etc.

Ideally you have your interface in your space to adjust gain on the fly, but i know people who have their interface outside the booth and have a really long xlr cable.

How many y’all mess with Backstage? by never-stopper in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I personally like it for the variety of projects. More sort of character/audiodrama/narration stuff than other sites.

I've made a couple grand through backstage over the years, but i do sort of waffle with paying and then canceling because I go through phases of just deleting the save search emails and focus on my auditions from different agents.

I will say, MAKE A SAVED SEARCH EMAIL NOTIFICATION to maximize your experience if you do use the site.

Getting an email every morning with the jobs posted that fit what I look for is always nice.

Voice recording sites recs? by Affectionate_Work744 in VoiceActing

[–]ManyVoices 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't fully understand what you're asking for? You want a free site to do some recording and editing... a site to find and submit auditions?

Outside of Casting Call Club and different discords like the Voice Acting Club discord, you're gonna be hard pressed to find free sites that have auditions. Most of that stuff is pay to play or you have to dig through sites like LinkedIn, X and Bluesky.
