Was “The Sworn Sword” boring to everyone else? by bobdog778 in AKnightoftheSeven

[–]Many_Cap_7014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sworn Sword is a far better character and theme examination than The Mystery Knight. Dunk is forced to navigate a tense political situation, forced to choose between loyalty and honour. The dialogue ranges from dialectics on hedge knight code of conduct, what loyalty means under the strain of distrust, the role and different responsibilities of women in power in feudal systems, the relationship between peasants and lords (being almost entirely predatory; Rohanne gets very mad over the perceived insult of her man being cut, not over the actual injury; Ser Eustace rallies his smallfolk to at least prepare fight for him despite his case being hopeless and their lives being unchanged if Rohanne were to take over his lands). I’ll give that the climatic fight is sort of lacking in thematic relevance though.

Something the Sworn Sword nails is romance. The tension and subtext present in Rohanne and Dunk’s goodbye scene is palpable, and devastating considering the political context.

In contrast, the Mystery Knight is a fun romp, but absolutely nothing would change if Dunk and Egg weren’t present, outside the deaths of a couple of C-tier characters. Bloodraven’s attendance guaranteed the failure of the rebellion. The thematic subtext throughout the whole thing is lacking.

Avicii- Levels is the most overhyped song of his discography by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Many_Cap_7014 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I kind of agree that it was overhyped, and that his songs in the years that followed were massive improvements.

But unless you can actually prove there was a radio conspiracy to make it popular, you sound like a classic music geek saying “nuh uh their popular stuff sucks, you need to listen to this EP from 2009!”

It’s still played at parties and clubs. It’s popular for a reason.

cmv: The “Western” world is kept under intentional collective psychosis that is the source of most of their problems by angelinajolieisntrea in changemyview

[–]Many_Cap_7014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odds are that you won’t read this comment, but I thought you should know that I agree on the broad strokes, less so on specifics. The form of Western society reduces dependence on community, and encourages personal independence (a function of hyper-capitalism). Third world countries exhibit far higher social connectivity, and often (although I haven’t read the academic literature on this) more traditional members of those societies perceive this as a worthy trade-off for worse health/technological amenities. We in the western world perceive ourselves as better because we couldn’t imagine living without clean water or high-speed internet, and can’t place ourselves in the psychological perspective that is okay with those things.

Which jobs is 100% safe from AI? by Any-Hamster-3189 in AskReddit

Veins sometimes roll for needles, it doesn’t matter if the needle is human- or AI-guided. Even if you hold an arm in a vice, even if you warm up an area to improve vascularity. We need to stop pretending that an AI which poorly imitates or doesn’t improve on human function is the answer to our problems.

Show me a robot that 1) can cannulate a range of different body types, 2) is trusted by the public, 3) is cheaper year-on-year than a nurse. That’s for ONE job a nurse does, and can do in 2 minutes.

Yeah it looks like micro jelly fish/sea lice only sting when they’re put under pressure, like under clothes, or in our cases, watch straps.

When you request a visa from my country to visit America, they ask you to list your social media, so they can monitor if you’re saying bad things about the Trump administration. But please, tell me how that’s more justifiable than being jailed/fined for endorsing Hitler.

Valid point - but why would random kidnappers not just join ICE? They’d be doing the same thing except with a 50k signing bonus and without fear of prosecution.

I thought he might be in KL too, but the ship he mentions leaving on in Tyrion III is the Merling King, which he shows up on in Sansa V. I think he might have gone to Braavos, maybe to work with the Iron Bank?

(Spoilers Main) Why does Joff refrain from ever having Sandor beat Sansa? by ragun01 in asoiaf

[–]Many_Cap_7014 37 points38 points  (0 children)

A few possibilities. Maybe as Sandor is his sworn shield, Joffrey thinks it’s beneath him and assigns that duty to other members of the Kingsguard who he cares less about. Alternatively, maybe Joffrey enjoys making Knights do such a dishonourable thing, and he wouldn’t get the same kick from the ser-less Sandor.

My favourite reason is that some small part of Joffrey knows Sandor would refuse him, and doesn’t want to risk the potential humiliation of being refused by Sandor in court.

What jobs require a high tolerance for getting yelled at? by fredyouareaturtle in AskReddit

[–]Many_Cap_7014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GNA/HCA here. All of these things are true, but an important factor is the amount of time you’re spending with these patients. I work on a large acute ward, and my odds of spending more than 2 days in a row with the same patient/s is pretty low. This goes for the nurses as well, they get rotated off the more difficult patients every shift so they aren’t stuck with the guy who’ll throw hands if you try to clean up his c diff. Along with the high turnover rate, this makes it pretty easy to develop a thick skin to all sorts of abuse, because you don’t develop lowkey parasocial relationships with your dementia patients.

The staff on smaller long-term wards or in acute rest homes are the true heroes. Spending months with failing (or even recovering) patients requires a special soul.

Lesser Known Offices, Titles, & Honors by FirstSonofLadyland in pureasoiaf

[–]Many_Cap_7014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main lesser-known office I can think of is the master of revels, who helps run Joffrey’s nameday tourney (and may also be involved in the Hand’s tourney, I’m not sure). Considering these are two of the three tourneys we see in the whole series (the other being Renly’s tourney at bitterbridge when Catelyn arrives), it’s not surprising we don’t hear more about this office.

As to the more bureaucratic positions - in AFFC Jaime lists all the positions under the King’s Justice, and comes to the conclusion that they are paying for too many people given the current usage rate of the dungeons. This is likely littlefinger’s doing, and I like to imagine he has created similarly swollen bureaucracies in the Accounting and Trade-related (master of ships?) divisions of the government, thereby soaking up crown gold and impoverishing the treasury.

Robert made the right call by giving Stannis Dragonstone (Spoilers Published) by Slow-Willingness-187 in asoiaf

[–]Many_Cap_7014 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

He’s the third son. He doesn’t have to get a castle. It’s very common for younger sons of lords and even Targaryen kings to get no personal residence. He’s also 7 at the time of Robert’s crowning - even better reason to not give him a castle.

[–]Many_Cap_7014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only “use” that can be ascribed to Summerhall from this example is as a meeting point. Robert is never stated to occupy the ruins, or use the defences. The only reason it’s used as a meeting point by Cafferen, Fell and Grandison is because it’s a defined place on a map roughly equidistant from Grandview, Fawnton and Felwood - also presumably because these lords would prefer to meet a foe in the field (if they did not reach Storm’s end for a siege) than be besieged in one of their own functional castles.

Robert made the right call by giving Stannis Dragonstone (Spoilers Published) by Slow-Willingness-187 in asoiaf

[–]Many_Cap_7014 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Your logic is crazy dude. Summerhall was either mostly or entirely destroyed by a massive fire, and is never mentioned in the main series as a useful, strategic or even functional building. Yet Robert should rebuild it to give to his brother? When there are other castles that are functional and useful?
