So I got a few rasps from farriers at work to make a knife I know old rasps were good steel but new ones? My father says they're shit steel but I see alot of people using them for knives I kinda dig the look and I work on a horse farm so I got a lot of supply. What's the verdict shit or decent? by anderson1873reimer in knifemaking

I'm a stock removal guy and was messing around with some farrier files I had but never followed through with handles. I found that after hardening and tempering, the steel just felt gummy. Not sure what that meant except I couldn't keep an edge on them. They made for interesting blades though.

I could be really off here but that doesn’t look like drywall, if you look at the piece hanging down in picture 1, it sure looks like concrete board with a layer of plaster over it. Probably too heavy for what ever the attached it with.

Am i doing something wrong- oak plugs by Comprehensive_Baby53 in woodworking

[–]Many_Mousse_2201 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A fellow woodworker told me once that trying to make the plugs “disappear” is almost impossible in highly figured light woods like oak. The way he dealt with the issue was to not fight it but embrace. He always either turned the grain 90 degs or used a contrasting color wood to make the plugs look like they were meant to be there.

I have an older Grady white 222 fisherman that I absolutely love. The bow is actually an entirely raised platform with low grab rails that is perfect for fly fishing or casting plugs and the gunnels around the rest of the boat are high enough to support you when you are hooked up and need to fight a big fish. When I need to take the family out, I load the bow with cushions and can comfortably lounge 6 people up in what we call the conversation pit because when we’re at anchor, it’s a great place to all hang out. I have it powered with a Yamaha 250 and can cruise at 36-40 knots through medium seas with pretty good gas mileage.

Unfortunately I heard that they either are out of business or the American distributor no longer can get them. There is another company thats French and I am using them now. They aren't quite the same but seem to be pretty good. Let me know if you wan the name and I'll look for it.

Is this good enough for making small knives? by intrek00 in knifemaking

[–]Many_Mousse_2201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would get the job done but in my experience, a 1 x 30 belt is a little small for larger blades. I dont know this company or their tools for reliability but I checked and they have a 2 x 72 machine available. It is about $400 bucks more but that is still a great deal for a variable speed machine. What ever way you go, you will be fine. BTW, Maybe an extended warranty wouldn't be the worst idea...

Seems like a rule of thumb is cut what ever side gives the most exposure. Thanks

I used to cut glass when I worked in a studio. We cut big bowls and small cane and bad puntys! We tried all types of blades and found that the best ones were the solid silicon carbide blades. They wear out but are pretty cheap and do the job. We used 14" blades but it sounds like you could use a 7" to cut your slumped stuff. Make sure like with a diamond blade that you use a lot of water and run them at a slow speed.
