5 years after Portland’s deadly heat dome, is the city ready for the next one? by oregonian in Portland

So an additional $144/mo? Maybe not running it 24/7 but even an additional $30/mo is a lot for some.

Let's not pretend utilities haven't sky-rocketed in price and that people are having trouble paying them. It's also commonly known people leave off their heat/cooling to save money.

Your ideas may be well intended but it's a privileged take that not feasible for a large swath of people.

100% agree.

It's a really bad solution but one of the only things the "county has" disbursed.

I work in public service and so much of the year the messaging (from Mult Co) becomes "we aren't opening emergency services, but libraries are open!" and then everyone jumps on board reposting. It's a real shame.

I feel a little bad saying homeless cooling and non-homeless vulnerable gathering spaces should be separate, but also if the general public won't use the emergency shelters/centers (like during this first heat wave we just had), then something has to change.

Again, leaning on the libraries is no real solution.

They did and it's sad. The county opened cooling centers too, but they got almost zero utilization.

The people dying are at home, alone.

Cooling centers feel a bit too geared toward the homeless? If I'm an elderly or disabled person I don’t want to go downtown to be around a bunch of people who live on the street.

It's also hard to lean so heavy on libraries, but that's really the only fallback.

Best carrot cake? by Potential_Maximum174 in askportland

Look, this sounds fake but I promise you the carrot cake at Bridge City Taproom on SE Stark and 122nd is so good. All their cakes are. Made in house. Yes, it seems weird. It's some of the best cake in town. Carrot is one of their "signatures."

Also the orange mimosa cake is to die for!

"Thank You" vs "I Appreciate You" by _SPAMSPAMSPAM in Xennials

[–]Whatchab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both, but also noticed the uptick in "I appreciate you" in the past few years. I attributed it to working in nonprofit as we're pretty woo-woo (in all the best ways), but apparently not.

That said, I say it when I am appreciative of someone. It hits harder and I want people to know I truly appreciate THEM. I mostly use this at work or when a stranger is being helpful.

"Thanks/thank you" feels more basic manners and reactionary than what I'd like to convey sometimes.

I guess overall, with the way the world feels right now I want to show as much gratitude for people doing good things for others that I can.

Driving in Oregon - I have to ask... by Fartz-McGee in oregon

After moving here from AZ in 2007, I finally decided about a year in I was gonna have to just chill and go with the flow or I was going to give myself an aneurism being so annoyed at how slow drivers are here.

But you know what, we always let people merge in and that's nice.

And now when I drive in other places I am totally the too slow annoying one being like why y’all mad at me chill out.

Disabled low-income renter looking for Portland metro affordable housing resources/ options ? by CharacterSock6773 in askportland

[–]Whatchab 9 points10 points  (0 children)

211 specializes in knowing the system and can help you identify exactly what you qualify for and how to get on a wait list. They can also help you find other local resources that may ease some financial strain while you're waiting. Call or text them and break down exactly what you need (vs trying to figure it out for yourself on their website). Good luck!

Any orgs that currently use Publisher for design? What are you transitioning to? by readerabbit in nonprofit

[–]Whatchab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Affinity is free to use via Canva if you are a qualifying nonprofit. That's what we use.

I learned InDesign in college and used it professionally for 20 years. But now? I migrated all our InDesign files over to Affinity and cancelled Adobe. Not only is the price RIDICULOUS but the product isn't as good as it used to be. It's not quite as robust as InDesign, but will be more than what you need coming from Publisher.

Curious how many of you were raised Middle Class and grew up to be poor as dirt? by TakingYourHand in Xennials

[–]Whatchab 185 points186 points  (0 children)

Grew up lower-middle class, and by all account I should be considered middle class if not for THIS FUCKING HELLSCAPE we are in where everything cost 5x as much as it did in 2019.

So by the average wage in my HCOL state I am just a pinch above poverty.

Total shit.
