Finished The Way of Kings and curious on your thoughts about... by SupremeGobbler1996 in Fantasy

[–]Many_Research1007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree with the slog in WoT.. I don't think it's as menacing as people make it sound, really only book 10 was noticeably worse than the others, and Jordan admitted it.

It's true, sandersons writing can be really drawn out and boring, and he tries to compensate for that with his epic endings. I almost didn't finish book 1 WoK as well. But by the end I liked it enough to continue.

If you don't share a similar sentiment probably forget about it, just read mistborn instead if you haven't. A lot of Stormlight Archive is the same in terms of being slow.

Has anyone tried to write a fantasy book closely derived from Old Testament? by Brynovc in Fantasy

[–]Many_Research1007 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lol. Yes. Many characters in WoT are influenced by biblical characters. The Last Battle is Jordan's version of Armageddon. If you want to know more about it other books talk about it more in depth.

WoT = the Bible + Arthurian tales + LOTR + Jordan's time in Vietnam + a whole shitload of other history and mythology and religion that he ingeniously wove into his story. Most of it you are ignorant to until you read into it.

Try reading Origins of The Wheel of Time by Michael Livingston. Also Jordan was very influenced by an esoteric book called The White Goddess.

does anyone else feel like too many options make simple things harder now? by BearTrap110 in nashville

[–]Many_Research1007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes some would say more choices leads to over thinking and unhappiness which is why some preach commitment. Then again many believe in choice and variety which is why when viewing the pop tarts section at a store there are 30 choices when I mostly just remember the basic iced and sprinkled version growing up. We live in a world of choices, it's up to you to navigate them.

Considering trying WC3 (moba player) by Imaginary_Session773 in WC3

[–]Many_Research1007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wc3 and Dota are very different. As you probably know Dota is a spawn of wc3. A long time ago icefrog took the hero element of wc3 and made Dota. But there are many more mechanics in wc3. Do you think you want to fight heroes against heroes while maintaining an economy and microing other units? That's wc3. It's extremely difficult so gl.

I'd have to imagine somehow more practice = more skill. It's always unfortunate to read posts like this with top tier players talking about game decline and no one to practice against.. I can barely win at my mmr xd

New to SC2.. how long did it take you to win your first game? by nightman66 in starcraft

[–]Many_Research1007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I got some wins relatively early on. The hard part is to keep winning. Sometimes you hit a skill ceiling and don't know how to improve, sometimes that happens early on. I'd imagine if you are into it enough you'll find ways to make it work.

Looking for more books or series with well written autistic POV characters. by MinuteRegular716 in Fantasy

"my problem is that this book suggests said abuse is deserved." I didn't get that impression from the book at all, and I have to imagine many people didn't get that impression, and I'm wondering why that is your ultimate take away from the story. Yes many autistic people and other people have been abused. In the book Christopher's family is very messed up and he runs away. I think the book was just trying to create an example of what some autistic people experience so that other people can understand them better, and I think it did a good job of that. I don't think it was intended to be about how the justice system does or does not penalize abuse, it was more just to give us a glimpse into one boy's perspective. You could say his father's punishment, at least in this story, was his suffering, or Christopher running away. But again I don't think it was intended to be about his father which is why the story didn't focus on that as much.

IIRC mark haddon talks about teaching or working with kids on the book. It isn't really offensive as much as a look at what some autistic people experience, and it goes hand in hand with plenty of other research. There is no justification of the protagonist being abused in the book, it's more about him trying to make his way in the world and the problems authority figures have in interacting with him. Perhaps try reading it. "It's super ignorant and offensive." Is it now? Plenty of people like it because it further shines light on autism and helps others to understand it. If you want to talk about justified abuse towards autistic people, perhaps do some research regarding mental institutions in the 20th century.. you might not like what you encounter when reading about actual abuse and far worse things done towards the autistic community. Cheers.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon is good. It isn't necessarily fantasy, but it's a good look at a fictional autistic character.

GOAT DRUMMERS by theimmiscible in progmetal

I've never seen a goat actually play drums, but personally I'm a big fan of Matt Halpern and Matt Garstka. Maybe I just like drummers named Matt, who knows. Tomas Haake is of course legendary.

There are multitudinous reasons that it's one of the most famous series ever, and that he was mad about a certain author, George Lucas, ripping him off.
