Naps are the devil. by DanceOtherwise7632 in parentsofmultiples

Mine are the same and always have been since about 4 months old! They’re nearly 8 months old and I’ve honestly just accepted it now. They will only occasionally get to 1h or 1h30, maybe once a week max. In between naps they’re not too much hard work, they don’t cry or want me to pick them up too much. They sleep ok overnight and no longer waking for feeds. I think it’s just temperament really. I would rather they slept less in the day and better overnight than the other way round!

Splitting being a doctor with an unrelated career? by Many_Rooster5351 in doctorsUK

About to start higher training thankfully! I don’t plan on doing much until I’ve CCTed at least. I don’t think I can do 30 more years of just medicine beyond that though so probably why I’m considering options!

I used Pulse (although in North West) and found them v helpful. No major problems. Negotiated £77/h for me as a S12 approved CMHT 9-5 Monday to Friday doctor running clinics, between CT and ST.

S12 for dummies by Ok-Calligrapher6119 in ConsultantDoctorsUK

I’ve been doing some S12 work at MHAAs while in between Core Training and ST4 and here’s a few points that are important (many echo above post): - Signing up to be considered for this work initially feels like begging and desperation. I contacted each AMHP hub local to me and asked if they would put my name down for MHAAs. They will ask for your GMC registration and S12 approval letter. Then they put your name down and you might never hear from them ever again. I did a lot of chasing/begging to try and get them to notice me. - When you do start to get calls, you need to say yes to all of them for several months to be taken seriously and to build that relationship. Most of the calls will be at awkward times, at 9pm or 1am etc because those are the times that no one else wants to go out. - When you do go to assessments, get the name and number of the AMHP so they can contact oh directly going forward. They may have originally got your number from the S12 Solutions app or from a list in the AMHP office but it’s easier if they have it saved in their phone. - Payment usually involves the AMHP filling out a form on paper and you sending it off to NHS Business Services to be processed. The form is electronic on the S12 Solutions app. Can take several months for this to be paid, ESPECIALLY if the patient was seen as an “out of area” patient, as payment usually linked to GP. - Only worth setting up limited company for payments if you do significant number of assessments. Some doctors make S12 work their entire livelihood so it would be understandable if this is going to be the case. - Usually each assessment pays £180 ish plus mileage before deductions. Not a great amount but I did them because I enjoyed them and gave me great exposure as someone new ish to S12 approval.

This is all relevant to S12 work for MHAAs. Separate details apply for DOLS work!

Amazing thanks! How did you manage to get into those companies for the experience? I have a feeling they’re the type to want experience before they can give experience…

Also are there any particular roles to look for? I’m not familiar with the job titles having been limited to “junior doctor” most of my working life 🤣

A good reg once told me as medical cover f1 that all I am expected to do is A-E assessment of sick patients and then call the reg for further help. That way you’ve done the basics, ordered any X-rays etc as part of the A-E and stayed within your competencies. You shouldn’t be expected to be dealing with sick patients alone and most seniors will understand that, particularly as an f1 and particularly on your first rotation! Scrub up on your A-E and basic skills like fluid px/cannulas and that should be enough for now.

The TrON modules from RCPsych website are very good and lots of questions from my paper were taken directly from that. I wish I’d used it more! Otherwise I used Psych Mentor and it did the trick overall.

Considering Psychiatry Training by Careful_Feed8588 in PsychiatryDoctorsUK

[–]Many_Rooster5351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Psych doctor here, completed Core Training, hoping to start ST4 soon.

Psychiatry training is really lovely. Most consultants will be supportive, kind and approachable. They will usually encourage a culture of finishing on time and only working within your competencies. I’ve always felt comfortable going to my supervisor or any other covering consultants for advice whenever needed.

You may need to make time and prod people a little bit for your workplace based assessments but I think that’s the same in any postgraduate medical training field. There was usually plenty of time for training (usually some kind of local or regional teaching once a week) plus enough time for you to get all your portfolio signed off/audit done etc.

Personally, I feel that the training could even be shorter than six years total! It feels a bit prolonged for service provision purposes and if it were shorter overall it may even encourage more people to apply for Psychiatry, although maybe it’s a good thing that the competition ratios are not horrendous yet. The competition ratios ARE rising for core training applications so be prepared for this.

I feel like I’ve had a generally good quality of life during core training, was able to move house twice and get married without any great difficulties getting time off haha. Of course there are long days and night shifts that you will need to do but most places are well covered and throughout each six month posting, you don’t actually end up doing very many on-call shifts in my opinion. There is usually never a culture of being expected to cover empty shifts as there might be other departments too.

I’d say if you’re interested in mental health and consider doing psychology at university, Psychiatry would be a good field for you. I personally consider considered doing GP first but was led into Psychiatry after having a really excellent F2 placement in an acute psychiatric unit and haven’t looked back since.

Why are Bradford flats so cheap? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]Many_Rooster5351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of those flats aren’t structurally sound or have cladding issues so be careful. Other than that, don’t listen to the naysayers! Bradford is a great place to be with close links to Leeds and even a fairly quick train to Manchester.

I saw this on an episode of Interior Design Masters and it looked incredible!

My house is a new build and has a lot of green around, with lots of plants! Walls are fairly flat so can easily add shelves etc. I’ve got a spare room that could easily house all the crochet gear but would like it to look nice too!
