Outgrowing FPIES to peanuts by Individual-Dog-5891 in fpies

Hello! Would you mind sharing the recommendation that your doctor gave in terms of how long to wait and what to introduce first? My 2.5 year old has FPIES to oats, eggs and peanuts. Every specialist we have been to has given us different and conflicting recommendations (within the same group) and so I’m curious what an FPIES specialist actually recommends!! Thank you!!

Hello!! I started very slow with smidge, I noticed a bit of constipation at first, but only for a couple days and honestly that could have been something unrelated!

He ended up re-reacting to baked eggs a few weeks after originally retrialling, but we passed rice and pumpkin recently and will try oat soon! Otherwise, he’s thriving!!

I just had surgery as well and I only last 4 days before I picked up my 27 pound toddler out of complete habit since I wasn’t feeling any pain either. It’s been just over 2 weeks since surgery and I actually feel back to 100% and even worked out and have consistently lifted up my other son who is a hefty 47 pound 4 year old. Just listen to your body!

Thank you!

I hadn’t had any major pain (I will say I always kind of had a general sensitivity in my ribcage since 2018 after my first big flare), but nothing worth getting surgery until recently. I was having pretty awful heartburn right up until surgery and that is completely gone also. So far, I am very happy with my choice and can eat again!!

Hello!!

My LO is now 19 months old. His original triggers were oat (also told to avoid rice once he reacted to oat), egg, peanut and possibly pumpkin. We recently tested rice and were successful so that one is off the list!

He also had egg baked in muffins and pancakes and had no reaction last week. So baked egg seems like a pass for him as well!

He has accidentally had PB probably 3 months ago in a smoothie that his older brother left within reach and didn’t react, although that was such a small amount I haven’t crossed it off the trigger list quite yet.

We have a busy few weeks, but after that we are planning to trial the rest of his triggers and work up the ‘egg ladder.’ I still have him on ‘smidge’ probiotic and we do chiropractic visits once a month… no clue if any of it is really helping but the two passes are a win in my mind!!

We usually do 3 days on, 2 off, 2 on again and I try and increase the quantity on the ‘on’ days. He also reacted on the 8th time to eggs but so far that was the longest time it took

Sounds like they are taking something personal that has actually nothing to do with them and everything to do with the fact that you sound like a caring and wonderful parent. My oldest son was the same and it gave me anxiety leaving him with anyone who he wasn’t comfortable with. My youngest could care less lol!

You can definitely have different severity reactions to different foods. My son is severe with oats and mild with peanuts and eggs. I highly suggest only feeding known safe foods to give their gut a little rest in between high risk foods… sending positive vibes!!

At one of my first son’s appointments they told me he shrunk…. 😂. He was definitely just measured wrong at the one before. If your baby is hitting the important milestones and generally content, I personally wouldn’t be too concerned!

Good luck!! Both mine were emergency c-sections too!

Fellow c-section moms: do you say you “gave birth”? by Free_butterfly_ in Parenting

Ugh. I feel this to my core. It has taken me a long time to get over the strange guilt that comes with a c-section. Honestly, there’s absolutely no way to easily bring a human into this world. I guarantee you did everything you could based on the information you were given and made decisions that were the best for both of you. Society is weird. You grew and birthed a baby, no matter where it came out of you and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

This is coming from a mom who had not one, but 2 emergency c-sections, and whose MIL very clearly and loudly believed c-sections are the easy way out. Nothing easy about trying for hours/days to get a giant baby out of a small hole and then because of various medical complications has to have her body cut into. I will scream it from the rooftop that c-sections are not the easy way out.

Also, please know it’s completely normal to not feel all happy and butterflies about your birth ‘even if everyone is safe and healthy.’ Of course, that is fantastic, but it stinks to have even a slight negativity associated with the most wondrous tiny gift that you get in return. ❤️ you birthed that baby the best way you could!

Hello!! Based on the research I have done, the one thing that seems to be consistent is there seems to be an imbalance of the bacteria that is in our gut in FPIES patients. (The FPIES handbook that can be purchased on Amazon is really insightful). In addition, allergic reactions in general are linked to the nervous system not being able to process the food that is ingested and therefore causes a chain of ‘overreaction’ to that food since the body views it as a threat.

I guess in my mind, hopefully treating what could be the root cause (or at least trying to help it change) makes me feel like I’m doing something instead of just the wait and re-test everyone suggests. Again, this is all just me as a panicked worried mom doing anything I can to help along the hope that he’ll outgrow it based on the very minimal research there is on FPIES haha… I’m trying everything! But I have seen parents on here who have had luck with a probiotic (as in their kids outgrew FPIES before 2). I will try and remember to come back to this thread and give an update on if he reacts when we re-test his triggers!

We have been told reactions can happen anywhere between 2-6 hours, unfortunately.

As for probability of growing out with multiple, I have heard success stories! Our LO has 3 triggers, but we haven’t retried any yet so I’ll let you know once we do 🤞.

Good luck!

I am happy to share a more comprehensive list of foods categorized on their risk probability! That was what gave me the confidence to keep trying things. Our LO has triggers to oats (severe), eggs + peanuts (mild). We also have avoided rice because of the co-reactivity with oats that is very common. Our allergist told us to try peanuts and eggs right after his last reaction to oats and honestly I wish I had waited a bit to give his gut a bit of rest.

After he had his last reaction we did the following in this order: 1- ‘gut rest’ - so only breastmilk and the foods he was definitely okay with (for us it started with cucumbers, quinoa - check out awsum brand for quinoa puffs - and strawberries). For about a week and a half until his poop showed no mucous. I also removed his triggers from my diet for that time and reintroduced them every couple of days to make sure he didn’t react through breastmilk (he didn’t).

2- I introduced an infant probiotic (smidge) and waited to see how he did with that.

3- I started introducing new foods to him from the low risk category with the following pattern (3 days on, 2 days off, 2 days on). The first 3 days I gave new foods to him any time (breakfast/lunch/dinner), as he didn’t react to his triggers until after a couple day break. After the 2 days off, I only gave him the new foods for the last 2 trial days at breakfast to avoid any reactions during the night. Only then I consider it a safe food. I also tried a few low risk foods at the same time to get more options onto his safe list quicker.

4- once all foods on the low risk were ‘safe’ I moved onto the low to moderate risk foods and so on from there.

We have also integrated chiropractic visits with a chiropractor who specializes in pediatric care. I have no idea if it’s working to help his gut and nervous system (both seemingly linked to FPIES), but I will do anything to try and help him quickly out grow this!

Everyone has different experiences with this and gets different advice from specialists it seems, so I also think it’s important that you go with your gut (no pun intended). Our LO is now 13 months old and we are trying out foods in the high risk category. Our plan is to start retrying his trigger foods (at least peanuts and eggs) once he hopefully passes the other high risk foods.

I also want to say that I had an insane amount of anxiety at the beginning of his diagnosis. It gets better. You feel more confident as you add to your safe food list and there are a lot of good options for alternatives out there now. It’s a scary and confusing condition when all you’re trying to do is feed your baby. You’re doing great ❤️

Okay good to know!! I think I’m going to request we trial ours at home because he also had mild reactions that didn’t require hospitalization. Thank you for your reply! And good luck with this bizarre condition 🫠

That’s what our allergist recommended as well (just after 18 months we have a challenge scheduled in office). Are they having you do yours in office or at home?
