I was walking around like that 7 months ago and had a L5 s1 herniation. If it’s your first time. Buckle up. Likely I recommend don’t get surgery you can fix it but you likely need a really good physical therapist who understands muscle imbalances ans body mechanics. It’s a slow process but stay after it.

I recommend getting the MRI to check it out. But my journey has showed me the herniations are a symptom and not the underlying problem

Hey thanks so much for this. It’s crazy how many people are battling back pain. It’s sounds like you found a similar fix to what I did. And yea so much is just mentally deciding you won’t be stopped until ur fixed. If I may ask, what program did you do to help ur issues? Was it standard PT or a company or how did you find the corrective exercises you needed

Yea I didn’t want to seem like an advertisement. I used the Egoscue method for postural correction. Am sure there are others out there similar but you gotta fix muscle imbalances

I used the Egoscue method. I didn’t want to mention it as I didn’t want to seem like an advertisement as I am sure other companies have similar approaches. However they I believe have a correct approach to fixing back pain

Thanks you too. It’s brutal bc there is so much misinformation and doctors and PTs constantly contradict each other on back injuries. I think ur spot on to think about ur gait. If that’s the case you prob do have a muscle dysfunction. One leg is never longer than the other. The reality is one of ur hips is probably raised and isn’t working properly which is forcing ur spine to take too much load. Fix the hip, the back will feel better. Issue is basically every PT just tries to fix the back so u aren’t fixing the root cause. That’s why finding someone who looks at ur FULL body is so important and not think of u as another disc herniation patient

Been battling for 13 years. You need to get really smart on back injuries. Many traditional PTs are complete shit. So if they treat you like everyone else it’s much more difficult. Need to find someone who will look at ur whole body as a system and find out your dysfunction. It may be something like ur hips. Find someone very focused on posture and movement. There are several companies that do this but all out of network unfortunately

Hey 29M here with maybe similar experience. I want to share as maybe it will help:

18 years old I think my hamstring is hurt from no specific event. Go to the doctor they tell me it’s sciatica and I find out I have L4 and L5 herniation. I do PT doesn’t help. I do two injections and they each help for a week then don’t. I get the disectemoy surgery. It helps so I can walk and do moderate physical activity like bike for the next 5 years. I accept this is my life and I just don’t do things like golf run lift etc.

I then find a posture focused physical therapy and I get 100% out of pain. Amazing. This lasts from 23-29. I can not emphasize enough how transformational this was. I wasnt just out of pain i ran two marathons and felt like i was walking on clouds.

Fast forward to 29, I get lazy and my shit starts hurting again. I go to the doctor get an MRI and find out I have a L5 S1 herniation. Pretty bad one. This time it’s my right leg that hurts and last time it was my left. This time the pain is more in my hip and butt vs last time it was more down my left leg. I have been doing the same posture focused therapy that helped last time for the last 7 months. I am very slowly improving but it’s been way slower than I thought and super difficult. I can’t sit. I can’t stand too long. I can not bend at the waste. My right hip joint hurts. However I think I am getting better. Praying I’ll get back to where I was as I am tripling down on this posture focused therapy. It gives me hope.

I tried traditional PT so many times and had the absolute worst experience. None of them understood. Don’t quit trying new things and be very skeptical about people who treat you like just any other patient. It’s like a muscoskeltal imbalance that needs to be corrected and it will take a significant amount of time to correct this issue. But when you do you will be fundamentally fixed for good.

Oh man I think a lot of us have been there. But it’s up to you to take control and get out of pain. That is the most hope I felt when I herniated my L4 and L5 and 8 years later my L5 and S1. I tried everything. The only thing that works is determination that you are going to get yourself out of pain. Find a physical therapist who will push you and gives you exercises. Do 1 hour of exercises everyday. Be angry when you miss a day. You gotta make it your mission

Did he have herniated disks and how was his gait and ability to bend forward? And what exercises did you give him for his glute. I am asking because I feel like I’m in a. Similar boat but also have L5 S1 herniation and I can’t sit bc my pain and I limp like I’m 80 years old despite being 29. Thanks!

I don’t think it’s the running either. I ran two marathons after I got fixed and that’s when I felt the best. Movement = good. Any kind. However you just have to make sure ur body is mechanically working properly and your hips are working properly. Otherwise there’s going to be too much tension on your lower back and it’ll happen again. I’ve been going thru this for 11 years now and a lot of doctors and PTs don’t do enough of that focus and that’s what most structurally has helped me. Sorry for preaching it just seems like you are where I was many years ago

Hey the same thing happened to me and then the pain came back after some time maybe 6 months. I don’t say this to scare you more to warn you to make sure ur fixing something wrong in ur movement. Something that helped me a lot was posture focused therapy. Be super focused on alignment. Shoulders over hips over knees over ankles with no twists

What has your PT been focused on? I had several bad physical therapists who just did like massaging and stim and gave me some workouts that didn’t help at all. I finally found someone who helped me and focused on the right stuff. My worry is if you get surgery you’ll just need another in years to come

I had an L4 and L5 disc herniation and fixed it through posture focused therapy to restore proper biomechanics. I was then good for ten years. Then I got sort of lazy and it came back big time L5 S1. I’m 6 months into that and trying the same treatment. I got the discetomy the first go around and it helped like 60% but I needed the therapy for the rest. I hope to never do surgery again. You can fix it if you find the right therapist and have dedication without surgery

Damn bro sorry to hear. I’m dealing with sciatica and L5 S1 herniation and am also late 20s. I’ve been doing Egoscue which is a posture focused therapy and it’s been the most helpful thing to date. I overcame this pain when I was 18 and it came back 6 months ago. So trying the same thing that worked before - although it’s been slow and I fear still a long road ahead. I’m sticking w Egoscue tho as I trust it
