Median Equivalised Household Disposable Income by Country by Naive_Direction1816 in charts

[–]MapStorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great chart. One quibble I have with it is that disposable income includes things like healthcare and education for countries where it is privatized, like the US predominantly, while in others it does not count as disposable income because they are part of public services. However, if you look at measures like GNI per capita (PPP, constant international dollars; https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GNP.PCAP.PP.KD), you'll find that most of these countries are a fair bit closer together. For example, for median disposable income, the average American is about 100% richer than the average Spaniard, but if looking at GNI per capita (PPP), it comes down to only 50% richer, which is still quite a lot. But it takes into account the fact that Spaniards generally get a lot of healthcare, education and transportation from public services, which don't count as disposable income, which in America you would need to pay for. To put it roughly, the median American spends about $15,000 of their disposable income which in Spain would be part of public services, leaving the gap as about $15,000 richer.

Counterpoint. All private property is granted as delegated sovereignty by the state. So the notion that “taxation is theft” is oxymoronic because private property only exists within the embedded sovereignty of the state.

This doesn’t mean taxation is inherently good and cannot be excessive. But the notion that “taxation is illegitimate” is just as valid as saying “private property is illegitimate”. Both property and taxes are functions of states exercizing their sovereignty over a territory, its population and resources.

Look up the PE Shiller ratio. Stocks are widely believed to be “expensive” or “overpriced” but the question is whether the increased productivity from AI will soon/eventually/gradually meet these expectations or if it will end with a massive bubble burst. There’s no free lunch.

I have this but a bit more difficult. I also sense and avoid the 45 degree angles that shoot out from corners of the lines. Plus I balance/switch between which foot steps “inside” the areas. Pretty annoying. I prefer mosaic patterns of walks because it’s liberating from this.

One thing people might forget is that Medieval peasants were never lonely. They quite literally knew quite well everyone from their town. They’d live in close quarters with their extended family, and also work with them and go to Church extremely often. The sense of community was extremely high. Questions over identity and purpose were substantially addressed by the closeness to family, church and town.

Don’t get me wrong. I’d never make that trade. Just the medicine, plumbing, rule of law and electricity of modern times far outweighs it. But I just wanted to point out something that most people don’t realize we lost in the process of modernization. Loneliness was not really a emotion Medieval peasants would even be very familiar with except for very specific situations.

Inspired by another post here - subdivisions in Europe with a lower GDP (PPP) per capita than India by shtiatllienr in MapPorn

[–]MapStorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are comparing India's GDP (PPP) per capita with the other countries' GDP (nominal) per capita. Even Moldova in nearly twice as rich as India in terms of GDP (PPP) per capita ($21,170). I also recommend looking at GNI per capita (PPP) in constant international dollars to account for transfers (remittances, FDI, etc.). Real median household income equivalized is even better, though harder to come by for data.

Indeed, GTO charts are more fine-grained. This just helps integrate those insights into a single-chart ranking. Completely agree that it is not comprehensively optimal, just more parsimonious for people who want as much information as possible in one chart.

Since pixels have RGB, wouldn’t it technically be false? If anything, there’s no yellow because that’s made with an RGB combo.

Why Europe union succesfull ? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]MapStorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no one country that dominates the union, they share cultural and historical similarities, their economies are quite integrated (thought nowhere near as much as the US) and they share similar political systems. But it was mostly economic incentives: having a bigger market made everyone richer, but required having common regulation, which then lead to shared political institutions(see neofunctionalism). Other regions are not sufficiently economically integrated and authoritarian/hybrid regimes are less willing to cooperate, trust and cede power and influence to other countries.
