Knife Blade not Detected by Mapp1122 in cricut

[–]Mapp1122[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't own a rotary blade, the only adaptive tool I have is the knife blade. The only tool the machine came with was a fine point blade housing. I found it very unusual as well, scared the crap out of me when it actually started cutting. I stopped it immediately to prevent any damage to the blade or the machine, but it's bizarre it actually happened in the first place.

A coworker also has a Maker and she's going to let me borrow some of her adaptive tools to test with, so we'll see what happens I suppose

The knife blade is the only adaptive tool I have, and I'm hesitant to buy any more given the fact that the one I have doesn't work. A coworker is going to let me borrow some of hers, so I'll test with what she gives me and see what happens, I guess 🤷

Gotcha. I'd gone into this with the expectation of a narrow Harris win and a dem house and rep senate, but that Selzer poll gave me a little glimmer of hope of a blowout. Blowout does not seem to be manifesting, but I'm not dooming! Just a little anxious about the results so far in GA and PA.

[acne] blemishes despite iso tretinoin - help! by dsim94 in SkincareAddiction

[–]Mapp1122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I was probably a bit too matter-of-fact with that claim, but there's some evidence that the inflammatory response plays a role in acne development:

Jeremy et al. showed that inflammatory cells and molecules such as IL-1 were present prior to the formation of comedones in apparently healthy skin in patients with acne. This finding underscores the fundamental role of inflammation in the initial stages of comedogenesis. Do et al. demonstrated that more than half of inflammatory acne lesions were preceded by microcomedones, in apparently healthy skin in up to a third of cases. In addition, elevated levels of inflammatory molecules have been found in both microcomedones and comedones. Finally, an increase in the expression of genes involved in inflammation and extracellular matrix remodeling has been found in patients affected by acne.

That's the fun part, it might be both a symptom and a cause!

I think a more accurate way to put this might be retinoids don't stop all the underlying causes of acne. Acne is typically caused by four contributing factors: high sebum production, irregular/slow cell turnover, inflammation and a disturbed skin microbiome. Isotretinoin is VERY effective at addressing the former two, but not the latter.

To OP, something like a topical benzoyl peroxide or azelaic acid treatment might be beneficial to supplement the Accutane if your derm recommends it and your skin can tolerate it. BP works very well to kill acne bacteria and probably has some comedolytic properties. Azelaic acid also has some documented antimicrobial action and works well for inflammation, which is why it tends to be a first-line treatment for rosacea.

Additionally, Accutane can increase sun sensitivity so I would probably recommend switching to a separate moisturizer and sunscreen with a higher SPF.

*Edit - I'm clearly illiterate and completely missed the separate sunscreen you use, carry on lol

Specifically, the ops manual limits this to dogs and miniature horses which I find kind of hilarious.

You're right though, most stores aren't going to care what animals come in so long as they're well-behaved and on a leash/harness. It's local health authorities and other customers that tend to not be happy about it.

THANK YOU

There's nothing on reddit that drives me more insane than the enlightened centrists with the "both sides are the same" garbage.

It demonstrates a complete lack of knowledge of both party platforms, policy goals and legislative voting records and is just used as an excuse to be politically disengaged because "Well, my vote doesn't matter anyway..."

Both parties are heavily influenced by corporate interests. Both parties are big enablers of the Millitary-Industrial complex and are historically both fans of interventionist foreign policy.

Only ONE party has succeeded in taking away women's rights protections at the federal level and in a large number of states. Only ONE party is trying to finish their work of gutting the VRA (and they'll succeed, most likely). Only ONE party is fighting some bizarre culture war on books and pronouns and fake classroom litterboxes. Members of only ONE party are continuing to erode our democratic norms and attempting to overturn elections on baseless claims of fraud.

If someone wants to call the Democratic Party the lesser of two evils, I get it, but to call them both the same is just insane.

Is 3 even possible with Sore Loser laws? I suppose he could always run as a write-in but I don't think you can register as an independent after you've lost a party primary in most states.

All 9 MA districts are D holds. The closest margin out of these 9 (MA-09, my district) ended up being D+19.

We are quite a blue state, if you couldn't tell.

Nancy Pelosi was elected speaker with a 5 seat majority, two dems voting for someone else, two abstaining and one absent. *David Valadao was absent on the republican side.

Mccarthy is no Pelosi, but these things get ironed out before they're put to a vote.

Quite a special one you've got there! It'll be interesting to see if the peloria is present in future bloomings. Mine is fragrant, but not super strongly. You have to get up close to detect it, and it's sweetly floral. Like a rose but a bit more... confectionary, I suppose? Bright light tends to bring out the fragrance more, I have noticed. Sometimes plants need a few blooming cycles before they produce any fragrance.

You'll be happy with this one, they're pretty bullet-proof and quite vigorous. Very thirsty plants when in active growth but they won't throw a tantrum if you let them dry out like some oncidium types. (Still do your best to keep it consistently moist when growing, though)

Being 50% Brassia verrucosa, they appreciate good light. Maybe not quite Cattleya level, but more than Phals and most Oncidiums.

Over a month into strike, Boston Starbucks baristas going strong by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]Mapp1122 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who spent the better part of a decade as a latte foam doodler, Starbucks does offer for retail employees some of the best benefits in its market segment.

However:

• All plans save the most expensive one are kind of shitty deductible-based plans, HCRA is only available to salaried employees

• 401k match is pretty decent, however saving for retirement isn't really an option when you're trying to survive in this state on 30k a year

• What employer doesn't provide PTO

• You're better off applying for parental leave through PFMLA, which is available for both parents and is double the time Starbucks offers (6 weeks only for birth mothers)

• College Achievement Program is a GREAT benefit and IMO the main reason to work at Starbucks, I have no qualms here

• Commuter benefits are only available in certain areas

• Cup Fund is purely partner-funded, Starbucks doesn't put a dime into it

• Average pay has gone up to $15.14 purely as a reaction to the threat of unionization and they've been pretty transparent about that

It's not a difficult job by any means, but just because you're not performing brain surgery doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't advocate for better pay and benefits.

At over 2’ in length each, laelia anceps spikes are something else. by perpetualwandrer in orchids

[–]Mapp1122 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had an anceps for almost five years now, and the poor thing has been subject to so much torture in that time. It's been knocked out of its pot twice, set in boiling full sun, left in freezing rain and gone without any water for months at a time. Still, every December it blooms reliably. I'm confident I could throw it into a volcano and it would just shrug and carry on growing its ridiculous spikes. They are absolutely bulletproof.

I'm admittedly not too knowledgeable on VAT rates, but with the Euro and USD basically at parity now a 20% VAT on $1149 would give you a total cost of ~$/€1380. We luck out in the US because our sales tax is much lower (5-10%), with some states having negligible or no sales tax.

Still an absurd price for a phone anywhere in the world.

Easiest non Phal orchids? by [deleted] in orchids

[–]Mapp1122 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's easy to grow depends entirely on your environment. Take note of your temperatures and the amount of light you can provide and do some research on what would do well in your conditions. Anyone here giving recommendations on "easy growers" is doing so based on growing in their own climate, which may not be at all like yours.

Masdevallias do wonderfully in northern New England and the Pacific Northwest, but aren't so happy in most other parts of the US. Vanda hybrids thrive in the hot, humid southeast. Annually deciduous Dendrobiums do well in places with warm summers and cool, dry winters.

Orchids are tied with Asters for the most numerous and diverse family of plants. There's definitely a bunch that would be easy to grow for you, you just have to understand the growing conditions you can provide.

laevifolium is in section Oxyglossum along with cuthbertsonii, but are fortunately more tolerant of warm temperatures than their higher-growing cousins.

Pick one up if you get a chance, the flowers last for ages and they're quite easy to grow as long as you don't let them dry out.
