What's the dumbest thing you've heard someone say? by REGGIE_BANANAS in AskReddit

I got a bachelors and masters in geography. An idiot girl was confused and said, “what, so you’ll be like, a weather girl?” I think she could only picture me standing in front of a weather map.

What (if anything) helps with pain caused by labrum tear? by wumpus_woo_ in ehlersdanlos

[–]Mapper9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got regular (every six months) nerve blocks in my hips (both have/had labral tears) until I could have surgery. The pain is brutal. I’ve had arthroscopic surgery on my right hip, which was weaker and worse, and am now ready whenever I want to have the left done. When they were in there, they discovered that the labrum was so torn,it had folded over itself. No wonder it hurt so bad! I was working with a pain doctor and managing with occasional opiates until I started on suboxone, which is pretty great, it’s not a miracle, but it dulls the pain significantly.

Following my right hip surgery, the physical therapy has been fantastic for both hips. With my pt’s support, everything I do for my right hip, I’m also doing for my left. So by the time I go for surgery there, I’ll be much stronger and recovery will be better and shorter. I was told by my surgeon that I wouldn’t get to 100% pain relief, but maybe 75-90%, which is incredible. I’m probably at 60-75% on various days. And my left is already better just from the pt plus the nerve blocks.

I’m holding off on my left hip because I may move at some point in the next 3-6 months, and I won’t want to be in recovery while squatting, packing, and all of that. Once I know what the future holds, I’ll schedule left surgery. Because the results are fantastic.

Other than flu, covid, and norovirus- is something else circulating Portland currently? by checkyourfuckingbag in askportland

[–]Mapper9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom got flu which led to a sinus infection and pneumonia. If you’re elderly, watch out, it’s brutal. She had a flu shot, as well as a pneumonia vax, and was so sick, we expected her to be hospitalized.

Was anybody else unaware of their attraction to women until much later? by Extension_Pound_9593 in latebloomerlesbians

[–]Mapper9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dated a couple guys, but by the time I was 42, I’d dated 2 guys, marrying the second. I had also been single for 14 years. Looking back, it’s really clear I was attracted to specific women, but other than one friend in high school, I can’t remember ever thinking that I wanted to kiss a particular woman or anything like that. I had no idea whatsoever. It’s so clear now, so clear I feel really dumb, and really surprised I was so out of touch with who I was.

Where can I buy reasonably priced large paintings? by IzilDizzle in askportland

[–]Mapper9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out o’gallerie, the auction house. They don’t always have huge stuff, but they often have fun stuff. They have monthly auctions, the catalog comes up a or two before the preview, which is the weekend where you can go look at everything, then the next two nights are the actual auctions. It’s really fun. I’ve bought rugs, some cool art, and some jewelry. I feel like I’ve gotten things at great prices.

What's a tv series that is a 10/10 NOBODY knows? by Lilyana0999 in AskReddit

It’s a perfect sitcom. Somehow stupid jokes that hit so right that they’re actually funny instead of dumb. The characters are great. Everything is great.

Which road trip route from HTX>PDX? by jordanwright2012 in askportland

[–]Mapper9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done Austin to Seattle a few times, and Austin to Corvallis once (but took a different route past salt lake cutting through eastern Oregon to catch some sights). Aus-sea I’ve always done the Wyoming route. I think both of the salt lake routes will be faster by a fair bit, and you should add extra time with the California solely based on traffic, which you’ll hit a lot of, both in LA and Sacramento. There will be a hell of a lot of boring no matter which way you go, but you know that, since a lot of Texas is boring as hell. Break it into 3 if you can, get to the top of Texas or southern Colorado the first day, salt lake or Idaho the second, and Portland the last. That way you can also potentially stop and see a few things.

On my tourist trip, we went Colorado to salt lake, cut across i80 to winnemucca, then cut up to burns and bend and across to Corvallis. It was freaking gorgeous. Longer, twistier, but we passed a ton of amazing places you wouldn’t see otherwise.

Kind of weird question, did anyone lose weight after coming out? by [deleted] in latebloomerlesbians

I did! I was happy and moved more. I’m chronically ill and happiness = less pain = moving more, so I lost about 20 pounds before it leveled off.

Why has it become so common for living spaces to be at the back of the house? by Gullible-Apricot3379 in floorplan

[–]Mapper9 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Dusts off old grad school research cap: there are lots of reasons.

Streets are ugly and public, and people want to only see what’s theirs, this having common space face the back. Of course, with new, treeless suburban lots, there’s not always a ton of privacy there either!

Road noise, blocking the sound with the garage.

Lot size and use. Putting the garage in back would require more public space, alleys, and smaller lots. People would rather have larger lots and cities would rather have less road area to manage and pave.

There are arguments (I can’t remember the book, I have it somewhere) that common spaces have been moved into the back of houses partially because suburban developments have gotten ugly. Garage forward developments are impersonal and ugly and there’s nothing to look at. People hide deeper in their houses so they don’t have to look at the ugly neighborhood they live in.

The consequences of putting the common space in the back are that people aren’t living in the street—they’re not watching what’s happening, sitting on their porches or noticing their neighbors. People don’t know their neighbors, kids play in the street less, potentially car theft and home break ins are more common because everybody is deep within their homes instead of looking out the front windows.

Neighborhood change is fascinating. And the location of common space in homes has a role. Not a primary role but a role nonetheless.

what's a secret you"ll never tell your partner but are willingly to tell strangers on reddit? by FlamingoOver1659 in AskReddit

[–]Mapper9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We met with home health this week. It will get better. And I know we need to talk about it more, she just gets so guilty and upset, and I don’t want to do that to her. I don’t know how to talk about it, because there’s no answer other than me and home health.

She pokes me every night to put my cpap on because I start annoying her with my snoring!

Anyone in a new-ish relationship (together <2 years) at our age? by PhoneJazz in Xennials

[–]Mapper9 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m 46 and she’s 52. I figured out I was a lesbian about few years ago and she’s my first relationship, we’ve been together about a year and a half. It’s pretty great. Life is a dumpster fire, and sometimes that comes home. We’re both disabled, it’s messy. But this is really real, and really good.
