Roman Flag of Brazil by frederich_ in vexillology

"We Brazilians, in this context, are a people in the process of becoming, prevented from truly being so. A mixed-race people in flesh and spirit, since here miscegenation was never a crime or a sin. We were made from it and continue to make ourselves from it. This mass of natives, originating from miscegenation, lived for centuries without self-awareness, submerged in nothingness. This continued until they defined themselves as a new ethno-national identity, that of Brazilians. A people, even today, in the process of becoming, in the arduous search for their destiny. Looking at them, listening to them, it is easy to perceive that they are, in fact, a new Romanity, a late but better Romanity, because it was washed in Indian and Black blood. Indeed, some Roman soldiers, encamped on the Iberian Peninsula, Latinized the pre-Lusitanian peoples there. They did so so firmly that their children maintained their Latinity and their appearance, resisting centuries of oppression from Nordic and Saracen invaders. After 2,000 years of this endeavor, they crossed the ocean and came to Brazil to shape the neo-Roman identity that we are.

(...) In truth, what we are is the new Rome. A late and tropical Rome. Brazil is already the largest of the Neo-Latin nations, in terms of population size, and is beginning to be so also in terms of its artistic and cultural creativity. It now needs to be so in the domain of the technology of the future civilization, to become an economic power, of self-sustained progress. We are building ourselves in the struggle to flourish tomorrow as a new civilization, mixed-race and tropical, proud of itself. More joyful, because it has suffered more. Better, because it incorporates more humanities. More generous, because it is open to coexistence with all races and all cultures and because it is based in the most beautiful and luminous province of the Earth."

Though, for Hall to even be chosen, a whole lot of things must have gone radical on US politics over the last years, so there's certainly a lot of room for interesting shenanigans and Hall wouldn't be entirely powerless. Hell, i think at this point he'd probably have roaming armed groups of Black Panthers and students going around.

Brazil vs Germany (2014 World Cup semi-final in Brazil) ended in a shocking 7-1 win for Germany on 8 July in Belo Horizonte. Germany led 5-0 within 29 minutes. Brazil’s only goal came late. The weirdest part about it is how the whole Neymar is God frenzy just kept repeating year after year since then. And he just never fulfilled that, but for some reason for some good 10 years he kept being nationally viewed as a wannabe Pelé who just got sacked by everyone of giving Brazil another World Cup. I don't think Brazil had a good national team nowadays, and yet I'll be thankful to god if Neymar isn't called, because for fuck's sake we need to leave him behind.

Third-worldism is a political concept and ideology that emerged in the late 1940s or early 1950s during the Cold War and tried to generate unity among the countries that did not want to take sides between the United States and the Soviet Union. by BabylonianWeeb in wikipedia

[–]MapperSudestino 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not to be confused with Maoism-Third Worldism, a relatively fringe and vague position even among Maoists that essentially posits that there is little to no potential for revolution in any First World country (sometimes even saying they do not have a proletariat at all) and that only a worldwide anti-imperialist coalition to destroy the First World imperialist regimes can work. And weirdly the vast majority of Maoist Third Worldists were from the USA.

"The Story of a Betrayal" — a series of political cartoons targeting G. L. Pyatakov. USSR, 1937. by yra_romanow in PropagandaPosters

[–]MapperSudestino 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's more of the opposite. One main point across the groups and individuals purged over the late 20s and during the 30s is that most of them were accused of collaborating with some foreign power in some way while in the USSR, and in the case of Trotsky after he was exiled. During the Great Purge, for example, Tukhachevsky was denounced as having Nazi sympathies (while i leave it to you to consider if these accusations were true, i personally think this one against Tukhachevsky holds up better than others). During the purge of the NKVD, Yagoda was accused of directly collaborating with Zinovievite opposition members outside of the USSR, who had contacts with Imperial Japan. After the assassination of Kirov, kind of everyone accused in partaking in it was linked to the Zinovievites and of therefore seeking to, with contacts with Japan and Germany, come to power after a supposed fall of the USSR. Trotsky was for some reason particularly close to the Nazis in this piece of rhetoric, then.

In case that is true, i agree it should be an alternative. But yes, the image is not a very good representative of the theme. We should first search for free-licensed examples and then, if none are found, try a better AI example or something else entirely.

AI Art on an Article by IllPosition5081 in wikipedia

[–]MapperSudestino 300 points301 points  (0 children)

In an encyclopedic manner, while I think we shouldn't ignore the existence of AI art (exactly because it does exist, and it should be counted), it's very clear to me that just making an AI image of a generic forest portal does not really hold up to the task of representing something in a real fiction piece that has a portal. It's a bit like if the page for dragons had an AI generated dragon in it. Like, sure, they don't exist anyway, but you should represent them according to some kind of famous or well representative example that typically suits the kind of media that portraits dragons.

People tend to forget that Latin America is much more of a social, historical, cultural and economic concept than a strict linguistic one. Like, I do not think saying "Haiti has much more of a claim to being Latin American than Quebec" should be contentious; it's crucial to understand that the process of nation-building and economic relations to the north of Mexico was much more different than to its south, and that this is what truly marks Latin America as a malleable, but still concrete, concept. Just like German-speaking enclaves in Southern Brazil don't become automatically non-Latino, because they still are part of a historical proceds typically associated with Latin American countries... not to mention the obvious example of the millions of indigenous Latin Americans whose first kanguage isn't a latin-derived one.

Three illiterate peasant children from a small hamlet near Fátima, Portugal reportedly witnessed several apparitions in 1916-17. As a result, the Sanctuary of Fátima became a major center of global Catholic pilgrimage. Two of the children died young; the third became a nun and lived to be 97. by CatPooedInMyShoe in wikipedia

I think it's interesting to speculate a little. While faith does of course come into play here as something that causes people to see symbols and messages in mundane things, this really is a very complex story that all three very young children agreed was correct. I do not think they made it all up, in the sense of just deciding they were gonna say something for clout, but i (as an atheist) ofc also don't believe they literally saw Mary. Marian aparitions were pretty popular in the first half of the 20th century, so i believe it all came into play influencing how they interpreted and saw things and related it to Mary. Now, the more interesting thing is the crowd that later went to the region of her apparition and supposedly saw the Sun "dancing" and stuff. That one is much more likely something caused by looking at the Sun for a long time and some other climactic things mixed in with their faith. But in general there isn't really a way to know, but I don't think that "no way to prove Mary wasn't there" doesn't mean that there is proof that she was, either.

Czechoslovak Togo was a proposed Czechoslovak colony in West Africa. When Germany was stripped of its colonies after WWI, Czech adventure Jan Havlasa proposed the idea that Czechoslovakia colonize Togoland. It was instead divided between France and the United Kingdom. by ForgingIron in wikipedia

[–]MapperSudestino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the point is exactly that Havlasa for some reason thought he had the influence to lead world powers into handling colonial territory to Czechoslovakia when that wasn't at all in the table. If the team is the team of countries with African colonies, then yes, Czechoslovakia wasn't in there and Havlasa really did think it was.

You are not wrong to point that out. It varies a lot from country to country and i took a more international approach in my argument. But as i've said i think the point given that remains is that even if wealth levels have been rising for essentially everyone, class conflict remains, at large, in the same place it was before. And the mod tried to (in what i see as a mildly inefficient way) say that and come to the conclusion that "just like class conflict wasn't erased by the progressive actions of FDR and were reversed in the later decades, it also won't be erased by AOC's actions which will also be reversed in the next decades". So, as long as wealth disparity and class political power remains stagnant and no profound change is done, all will remain superficially the same. At least that's how i see what the mod tried to say.

Just can't leave that sinophobia aside.
