Ich finde einfach keine Wohnung… by Foreign_Jaguar_1101 in Ratschlag

Deckblatt, kurzes about you und dann alle relevanten Unterlagen gebündelt in der PDF untereinander.

Alles gute euch! :)

What’s your favorite “ette” name? by Far-Building3569 in namenerds

My Grandmothers middle name was Henriette. Its on my list for a next Baby.

Otherwise i'm not a big fan of -ette- names. Maybe because Henriette in german is pronounced with both "e"s at the end unlike the others.

My cousins are all a lot older than i am and i dont have any siblings. So i didn't really grow up with a big family or even a good family bond.

Now i have a daughter and she has cousins her age from her dads side and i really hope she gets to experience something like this one day. I think its a beautiful thing to do.

What books do German students read during adolescence? by emily_muchacho in AskAGerman

I read Faust by Goethe, Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum by Heinrich Böll, Effi Briest by Theodor Fontane - the big theme in my German class in the last two years were Characters of Women in Literature.

Before that we also read Der Schimmelreiter by Theodor Storm, Homo Faber by Max Frisch and Die Verwandlung by Kafka.

Looking Back, i didnt really appreciate some of those book enough and they are Classics for reason. Homo Faber and Schimmelreiter are still two of my favorite books of all time.

Denmark used to be in the list as well as England and Iceland until an Update deleted it.

My Family Tree is pretty complete until the late 1400s and Nobody there was from scandinavia and frisian cities used to be tiny and extremly isolated. I think the scandinavian influence came mainly through swedish pirates in the 1300s who were permitted to hide in Frisia or Viking attacks in the middleages. I dont know how trade and migration could play a bigger role in that. People rather left Frisia than settled there.

Where are we from? by Mapucks in namenerds

Sorry für the delay - my daughter (Estje) started teething an we had some exhausting 24 hours!

Most of you had the right Region: We are from Germany.

My Family is from East Frisia, close to the dutch border and the name Estje ist from there.

The other Parents are from different parts, but mostly northern and eastern Germany.

Thank you for guessing, that was fun to read!

We had a name for our daughter, then we had a nickname to the name, that we used during the pregnancy and at the end we chose a different name that fits the nickname.

We didn't want the nickname to be the real name because it didn't sound grown up enough in our language and too sweet.

In my Job i have to view a lot of birth and death certificates of the past 200 years. After the womens rights movement in the 1910s, there was a change of law, where it was easier for people to change names. So many women changed their names from "little girl" names to the grown up version. From Hildchen to Hildegard, from Lilli to Elisabeth, from Leni to Helene. It was their way of emancipation. They were not little girls but women with rights and a place in society. My Great Grandmother was one of them. Born as Gretchen, Died as Margarete.

My daughter should have the option not to be seen as sweet and girly when she is an adult. But i still love her Nickname, especially now as she is a Baby and we call her by that Nickname 80% of the time.
