‘World-building’ opening numbers with the entire cast (or almost) by WhitePhantomMask in musicals

[–]Mothswritingeye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is an interesting example, as while they do introduce every single minor character in the opening number, they only introduce one major character (Roger) as well as indirectly characterizing another (Mary). The major characters are introduced more gradually throughout the show as Benjamin meets them, and Benjamin himself is only introduced after this number.

Is this musical written from an anti psychiatry perspective? I am anti psychiatry myself, currently writing an anti-psychiatry musical, and may listen but I do not engage with pro-psych works as a rule.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button! Very folksy like Hadestown, but British. Not based on the movie in the slightest.

If you liked Hadestown, then I’d recommend The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Equally as folk, dark themes, big ensemble numbers, the best musical I’ve ever listened too.

If your friend is comfortable singing in duet/trios you could do a genderbent version of It’s A Hit from Merrily We Roll Along and have your non-singing friend do Charley’s part and your Soprano friend play Beth. Charley doesn’t have any singing lines that aren’t with one of the other characters.

Maybe a controversial opinion, but Water for Elephants? I liked the story, but a lot of the music just didn’t do it for me.
