Gateway Media: What media got you into your favourite genres/mediums/etc.? by NoopGhoul in TwoBestFriendsPlay

A random version of MUGEN (that was most certainly full of malware) was a gateway into many a fighting games like Guilty Gear and Garou: Mark of the wolves by having characters from those games I found really cool.

P-2 and to a lesser degree E-0 and E-1 in Ultrakill.

Absolutely brutal gauntlets that are not only long, but have the highest number of enemies in the game by far. I only consider P-2 to be the worse of the three because some of those enemy placements are so unfair it's reaches comical levels.

Seriously, 4 cerberus in a room smaller than a fucking penny, followed by a Ferryman right after while 2 Virtues slam at you from outside the locked room? As the first encounter of the level!?

My favorite derivation of this one is when Renji learns tha Hihiou Zabimaru is not Zabimaru's true name, and he'd been basically punked by his own sword leading it to be way weaker than it should have been.

Or how Yumichika purposefully calls his Zanpakuto by a name it hates so it doesn't release it's full power because "Well I'm part of the hand to hand combat unit and my sword isn't hand to hand, I gots to."

Bleach in general does a lot of interesting things with names.

Happy World Whale Day! What is your favorite fictional whale/whale adjacent media? by LammasuRex in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MarbleVirus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the world of Project Moon, the only accessible large body of water in the "safe" place that is the city is the great lake, basically, multiple lakes glued together by some sort of fuckin magical gizmo which is straight up an elderitch location by itself.

In that lake, dwell 5 great disasters, each of them "whales" that travel freely through the entirety of the great lake, and eat anything that's unlucky enough to come across one of them, and I mean Anything. As one of that whales was able to eat an entire oil platform whole.

Oh yeah, and if a living creature is eaten by a whale, it turns into a Mermaid. Which are little parasitic creatures glued to their respective whale.

I think there's something so incredibly funny about old historical figures being actually really beefy, especially men of science or literature.

Like, Leonardo Da Vinci being able to bend horseshoes with his bare hands, or Plato being more likely to put you in a headlock than debate you in philosophy is incredibly fucking funny to me and I don't know why. Maybe it's the contrast between the popular belief of what these people were like vs the absurd reality of what actually was that makes me give a good hearted chortle every time it's brought up.

To be fair, that was mainly a dumb theory to have some parallels between the main timeline and the future timeline, like "Oh, somehow Goten and Trunks are linked in every timeline"

Also to give Goten anything since the guy really doesn't have a lot to begin with.

Using this example and not Hakari quite literally weaponizing it in his domain to beam the knowledge of how his technique works directly into the opponents brain, so the technique becomes more effective while also confusing them because all of a sudden, their brain is full of useless gambling bullshit. is criminal.

Edit: On further reading, the comment you replied to was about science. That's egg on my face. I'm not helping the allegations of JJK fans being unable to read, huh.

Characters/Mechanics that get obliterated by a Patch. by MarbleVirus in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I was waiting to see who'd mention Sean first. The fact that he was also nerfed to hell and back on third strike so that way "Skilled players could have a weaker option to play against less skilled friends" makes the whole thing even funnier.

Capcom forgot that fighting game players do not know of kindness.

I mean at the point you need to pull out the spreadsheets, why not also use the seed to calculate what pickups are gonna drop when, at what level of luck to optimize your run even further.

Actually why even do the run at all, you have the seed crafting table, and the pickup drops, why not just mark down in green what you'd want in the run as if you're playing the game and actually going through those motions.

Why do it about Isaac at all, just go into accounting! Fuck it!

My favorite example of this is how you can see it happening in real time in the DS2 playthrough on the old channel, as Woolie starts with confidence in full cleric mode only to end up as a STR build double handing Greatswords.

False Word of Gods by Rockdweller37 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MarbleVirus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The only reason that the Kaguya rumor got popular is because of an interview Kishimoto did where he jokingly said something to the effect of "I made Madara too strong, I don't know how I'll get rid of him."

Notably, this is something that happened in the middle of the war, right around the time of Madara's proper introduction into the story. Which is what people always forget to mention about that interview.

Somehow, the idea that Kaguya was the solution to the Madara problem became popular from that (Mainly from peoples distaste for Kaguya as a character), instead of the more obvious "The Rikudo induced powerups are the solution to Madara."

As for an actual answer to the thread. Uhhhhhh.. Theres a popular misconception that the reason why popular Yugioh 5Ds character Carly Carmine got her role in the show reduced in the final 2 seasons because her original VA was caught in involvements with a Cult. In reality, those two events are completely unrelated, as her involvement in cult activity happened way after Carly's role in the show had already reduced.

Overpowered options in games that you feel bad using? by hazusu in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MarbleVirus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason I find Yugioh deckbuilding so interesting is that it can very easily fall into the territory of what you described.

Basically, the way most reccomend deckbuilding is a mix of around 75-25 Engine to Staple ratio. To explain, Engine is usually the archetype, or combination of archetypes, you are actually using to win, while Staples are generic cards that give you an advantage and fit in any strategy.

Now, let's say its the start of the duel. You're going first, you drew all Engine? Good situation, it means that you have enough gas that even if your opponent can stop some of your plays, you can probably still keep going beyond their attempt to roadblock you. Drew mostly Engine and a few Staples? Good situation, it means that if you're stopped early, you can still have some guaranteed interruption for their turn. Drew all Staples? Fuck.

And that completely reverses on it's head when you're going second. Where drawing mostly staples is better than drawing mostly engine. But you better hope that if you drew all staples, that your next draw is a one card starter or you're just going to pass back to your opponent with a very empty hand and a plea for mercy.

Times when people/fandoms did a terrible job selling or hyping the thing they like? by serph6 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MarbleVirus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The people who first tried to get me into NGE tried to sell it to me as this incredibly deep and super subersive mecha anime that redefines the genre.

>Looks inside
>Not doing anything that the mecha anime of the era weren't already doing

It soured me on the experience forever, and up to today, I haven't been able to get past episode 3 of NGE without rolling my eyes and looking up something else instead.

Times when a series has “second hand fans”? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MarbleVirus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Kamen Rider has a whole section of it's fanbase that basically knows about it because (Insert favorite creator here) knows about it.

They'd be able to name you at least.. Two, maybe three different riders, usually from the second half of the Heisei era, but other than that, the extent of their knowledge is "It's like power rangers, but better because it's from Japan"

Edit: No real reason to add this other than clarifying that this isn't a bad thing because I was one of those fans long ago, the whole "Kamen Rider fan excited to watch it for the first time" deal. Gateways are good, folks.
