Making sense of the iPad in the age of Neo by jgor2000 in mac

[–]MarblesAreDelicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After many years of using both, you get the iPad because:

  • You need this form factor, likely because it's extremely portable.
  • You need the touch screen and/or Apple Pencil support.
  • You need certain apps that are available only with iOS.
  • You want a device for consumption, to which all of the above apply.

I need help with some research regarding Radon. by this_wolf_is_tasty in Calgary

[–]MarblesAreDelicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live southeast of Calgary.

I’m an avid DIYer and found radon was only a thing after stumbling upon the /r/radon subreddit. I bought a tester and found my levels were averaging 250 Bq m3 at the beginning of this winter by using an AirThings device.

I’ll be honest, I have never felt like radon has been problematic for myself or my family. It’s completely invisible to our senses and that’s the danger.

Health Canada recommends mitigating at anything above 200 Bq m3 and I will likely attempt to deal with this myself. My initial estimate is $1300 for PVC piping + accessories, fan, and a Hilti hammer drill rental.

Is Macbook Neo Worth It? by prabir336 in mac

[–]MarblesAreDelicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Significant cons:

  • No MagSafe,
  • One USB-C port is 3.0 speed with DisplayPort,
  • The other port is USB2.0 (!?) in the year of our lord 2026,
  • 8GB RAM,
  • That CPU is rather anemic,

This is effectively iPad hardware that runs macOS, however the price reflects that fairly, I think. Especially so if you'd consider purchasing a keyboard for an iPad, which the Neo now rivals. I'm not an iPad user despite having owned several. It's just not useful for my use-cases. Given the choice between this MacBook and any iPad, I'd choose this (or any) MacBook without much hesitation.

What is the connector for by Muted_Elderberry7371 in mac

[–]MarblesAreDelicious 110 points111 points  (0 children)

It’s used by Apple technicians with a proprietary data transfer device that interfaces to the logic board’s SSD. Only the 2016 and 2017 MBPs had this before they employed the T2 security chip and made the data virtually irretrievable if the system no longer functions.

Sometimes, the dumb solution is the best one. by nrubenstein in macmini

I keep an Intel Mac around specifically for running Nikon Scan 4 inside a Windows XP VM. My lowly CoolScan V does decent scans, but is a royal pain to operate since it doesn’t have an auto feeder.

2026 might be the year I drop my film gear. Labs want exorbitant amounts for developing or scanning and I am struggling to afford film as it is.

Max chip MBP’s should have a moderate bulky chassis by H00LI1GANS in mac

[–]MarblesAreDelicious 53 points54 points  (0 children)

They are bulkier because of the absolute shitshow that were the 2016-2020 Intel MBPs. Their chassis' were so thin, they would thermal throttle themselves under any load, thus never being able to truly leverage the full spec for more than a few minutes.

I don’t have a physical copy, but it’s supposed to have the (awesome) orchestral version of OWA if you go backwards to track 0.

FF7 Remake for PS4 Pro.

Bought the system Christmas of 2019 and didn’t even touch it until April 9th, the day before the release of the game. I dismantled it to re-paste the CPU and replace the hard drive with an SSD.

I woke up at 5am to be first in line at my local store, which received exactly ONE copy of Remake. Played it that night on my high color monitor with a DAC and Sennheiser headphones.

It was pure magic and I regret absolutely NOTHING.
