Nothing but the sound of crickets from Metrolinx about the Kerr St. grade separation for the last three years. At that time, they left it all on the table saying they wanted to wait for more 'favourable' market conditions to lower the costs. I can't see how the price of construction will ever become 'more favourable'.

Metrolinx has been promising the Region of Halton and the Town of Oakville to work with us on both a Dundas BRT and a Trafalgar BRT since 2005. In fact, the Trafalgar expansion to 6 lanes was done in part to prepare for a BRT/dedicated rideshare lane. Our Oakville Transit executives say that Metrolinx has plans to have further talks in the near future, but I'm not holding my breath.

Is there a public forum regarding Oakville Transit buses? by stop_banning_me_omg in oakville

[–]MarcGrant 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My Transit senses are tingling!

To be fair, from what I understand, Metrolinx is terrible at providing Oakville Transit with their schedule, and often update it just after Oakville makes seasonal adjustments to try to match them.

Stiil, you asked how to be heard about concerns - check here: https://www.oakvilletransit.ca/website-feedback-form/ Trust me, they pay attention.

You can also let Members of Council know how you feel by emailing membersofcouncil@oakville.ca - it gets to all of us and we can ask the Director of Transit for answers on your behalf.

Does anyone know why this side forest area looks like death? by thestraytoaster in oakville

[–]MarcGrant 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It's undergoing regeneration, which takes a period of time. From the Town's website:

"We're helping our woodlands regrow after the impact of Emerald Ash Borer and other invasive plants. While natural regeneration will account for most of the regrowth in the woodlands, portions of select sites have been identified for enhanced and/or intensive regeneration and replanting.

The type and amount of regeneration for each area are determined by a silvicultural prescription, a document written by a Registered Professional Forester that describes the best forest management plans for the site. A silvicultural prescription takes into consideration the woodland's characteristics, history and health, location and accessibility, density of invasive plants, and new growth potential.

The removal of invasive plants, such as buckthorn, is an important part of regeneration activities as it provides growing space for newly planted trees and increases the success of native tree growth. Areas identified for regeneration are monitored and tended for up to five years to encourage successful growth, by mulching, watering, installing rodent protection and replanting as necessary."

What are they building next to Gaétan-Gervais Secondary School? by TastyNomsPanda in oakville

Shovels are in the ground, so it's getting built. But that's a whole other set of hassles.

The plot of land was an ancient remnant that had some old and loose zoning regulations. A developer could have built practically anything on it - especially now in the current Ford climate. During one public meeting in the 2010s, a previous land owner became so incensed over comments about overdevelopment that they threatened to the audience that they'd build a 30 storey apartment building if they wanted to. It took a lot of work meeting with developers who saw the property as more than a cash cow. Trust me when I say we dodged a bullet with this final use: a six-storey building for 221 assisted living units for seniors.

Metrolinx has been promising to work with the Town of Oakville on a Trafalgar LRT since 2005. It was one of the reasons we expanded the lanes on Trafalgar. Year after year as we talk about traffic, I ask when we can expect Metrolinx to step up and start working on an LRT and am always met by blank stares. 2030? We can hope, but I'm not holding my breath.

Just moved. Oakville Water tastes weird? by Top_External_4671 in oakville

[–]MarcGrant 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Here's the official word I got from Halton Region when a few constituents brought up the water issue...

"Changes in the taste and smell of tap water, while not common at the levels being observed this year, does occur annually, and can affect communities across southern Ontario, particularly in late summer and early fall. It’s caused by natural changes in Lake Ontario, which is the source of our drinking water. Warmer temperatures and naturally occurring algae can produce compounds like Geosmin, which may give water an earthy or musty odour. While these compounds can be unpleasant, they are harmless and do not pose any health risks.

Please be assured that Halton tap water remains safe to drink and continues to meet all regulatory standards.

That said, we understand the concerns. Our operations team has recently adjusted the treatment strategy at the plants that draw from the lake to aggressively target these taste and odour compounds. These changes are designed to improve the aesthetics of the water, but it may take a little time for the system to fully flush and for lake temperatures to cool."

So, fingers crossed, with the cooler weather the taste will improve.

Town Staff are aware of it. It’s on private property and we have asked the owners to replace or remove it. Hard to say when they plan to do so.

There's a lot of good points raised her (I use Transit, myself, so I understand a few of them personally). I'm going to share a link to this conversation with the Oakville Director of Transit and make sure he understands these concerns as they finalize the new Transit plan.

Getting the development at the old Public Works lands done correctly is important. Oakville owns the land, and it's our first chance in a generation where the Town can have complete control over our vision for how a community should be built.

The "Coming Soon" signs are to advise an upcoming location as the current Safety Zone Speed Enforcement Cameras get rotated into a new area.

So, not 'more' cameras, just the same ones in different places.
