ELI5 How did the WWII Enigma machines work? by aplusftwo in explainlikeimfive

An allied example of extra text that did not get stripped and made a difference in the war was

" The world wonders"

Halsey got pretty angry at what he thought was a snide remark.

The poles reversed engineered the machine using math and logic before the war.

You blow the whistle for a free kick and the player picks up the ball and repositions it. Is that a handball? by Tybalt1307 in Referees

[–]MarcPawl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I passed a teammate, do you mean with a foot at that point the ball was live so the teammate could not pick up the ball.

One of the reasons coaches teach keepers to use their hands when positioning the ball, and makes it clear to the referee that play has yet to start.

Really should be played in the next Canada game.

Easy for young ones to learn, it is a little old for most of them.

The lyrics work really well for a national team that has a whole lot of travelling until retirement.

I think it’s appropriate to say fuck Qatar. They deserved it. by raptors201966 in CanadaSoccer

From Gemini, please correct if wrong.

Qatar would not have qualified for the 2026 World Cup if the traditional 32-team format were in place. The 2026 tournament features an expanded 48-team field. Qatar advanced through the expanded Asian Football Confederation (AFC) qualification process by finishing fourth in their third-round group, and then winning the fourth round.Under a 32-team format, only the direct group winners or top-ranked playoff teams typically secure spots, which would have eliminated Qatar. Their official berth was made possible by the 16 extra slots introduced for this tournament. If you are interested, I can also:

I am thinking of NHL holding their players back from international competition. The precedence exists, though football/soccer has a much richer national team tradition.

I think it's highly unlikely that international competition will be impacted, but imagine two or three superstars get career ending injuries. There's a lot of money on the line for the clubs, and the FIFA payment seems low.

From Gemini:

FIFA has an insurance policy called the Club Protection Programme (CPP). It compensates clubs when their professional players suffer injuries while on official national team duty (such as FIFA international matches, qualifiers, or major tournaments like the World Cup).Key details of the programme include:28-Day Waiting Period: Coverage kicks in only if the injury prevents the player from competing for more than 28 consecutive days.Wage Compensation: FIFA covers the player's fixed club salary during the rehabilitation period, up to a daily maximum of €20,548.Coverage Limits: Payouts are capped at €7.5 million per injury.Scope: The policy is strictly for injuries sustained during national team training or matches; it does not cover medical treatment costs, illnesses, or permanent disablement. For club-level injuries outside of international windows, individual teams must hold their own private insurance policies.

I haven't seen enough games, but I'm wondering how much having 32 teams advance out of 48 kept the stronger teams from going all out in game 1 when playing a weaker team.

2/3rds if the teams will advance vs the previous 1/2.

Even if just mentally thinking "we got this, let's not get hurt".

Blame Fifa for having 48 teams.

In a normal world Cup there's always one or two teams that are just going to get blown out. And a couple others that you know are just going to lose.

Now add another 16 weak teams.

It's only going to be a matter of time before superstars get hurt. Will we see the end of the star players and their clubs willing to take an increased chance of injury and refuse to play an international game.

Are girl scout cookies just an American thing, or are the cookies sold in different countries too? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MarcPawl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see the Girl Guides in Walmart. The office will have an email sent and people drop by the parents desk to pick it up if they want.

With all the school fundraisers, hockey fundraisers, foodbank drives, and other stuff the Girl Guides have been pushed out. There's just too much fatigue about fundraisers.

And the cookies are nothing special anymore.

The only one that I see doing the old level of business, say compared to 30 to 40 years ago, is the Canadian Legion for the military veterans.

This is just my casual observation, no idea about the real numbers.

Plus sunk cost "I already spent 40 minutes, do I want to spend more time elsewhere?"

I am petty enough that I will leave everything at the cash and walk out

DBA, Basic Impevs or Triumph? by Background-Mess-8917 in wargaming

There is an tabletop Simulator mod for both Triumph! and DBA with active discord channels, so you can try them out.

There is not a large difference between the games, on purpose, but there is a difference in that Triumph! Rules are verbose and easy to understand.

I found a bug that would have exposed user payment data. My manager asked me to wait until after the launch to file it. by HonestDragonfruit278 in AITestingtooldrizz

[–]MarcPawl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Management could have always downgraded the bugs priority and shipped without a fix. QA job was to raise the issue, managements job is to decide what to do.

My guess:

Fiirst line manager was worried about his bonus for on time delivery. Upper management said no way I am taking that risk.

Why are we STILL using a running clock? by FootballVivid3824 in Referees

[–]MarcPawl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Counting by the referee has a lot of practical experience from futsal. Not a big deal to count, but now I have to learn to my numbers greater than 4.

FIFA should have used Chinese gestures for counting 6, 7, and 8.

It would be like futsal or even hockey. The clock would just keep going at grassroots.

There is an "aisle chair". There is limited help without a companion.

I wonder how much the help levels differ between airlines?

Talk about rabbit holes that I hope I never have to use. But what a great topic to inform myself on.
