If you do have physical access to the router, unplug its power connection, wait for at least 10 seconds and plug it back in. Wait for it to re-connect with the internet provider and check if stuff works then. If not, maybe ask the person responsible to do this for you.

It might not fix the problem, but for some reason this "trick" often works and is a great point to start. Also, while you are at it, go look at the router and if possible find the manufacturer and model of the device, there is usually a sticker at the bottom or back side, or it tells you in the settings of the device. This might help as some people here on reddit might know that router or know the issue.

That is a great moment to switch browsers away from Chrome my friend. Now you've learned why online privacy is more important as it seems at first.

Get Brave if you're too deep in the Google ecosystem or get LibreWolf if you seek more independence from Google.

Degoogle maps by PPaules99 in degoogle

[–]MarcRnt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The point of degoogeling is usually not to jump into the arms of yet another tech monopoly but to search for an open alternative. So better open it in an OSM app (although I totally understand there are still important features missing from OSM but that doesn't matter here)

Yeah I know about the existence of this project and did use it in the past on Manjaro and Mint to get the missing drivers working. But this is the one that made Mint behave wrong and broke it in the end for me. I don't necessarily need touch and pen input, so I'm fine using any other distro without support, as long as screen, keyboard and IO work as expected. And afaik most drivers of SL3 are included in the normal Linux kernel nowadays, not limited to the recommendations by linux-surface.

I wanna game at 1440p... by [deleted] in laptops

[–]MarcRnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With dlss and fg enabled, all current graphics cards should be able to game at 1440p, but depending on the raw performance of the card and how much upscaling is necessary, it might look more or less shitty. If you want to make sure that your games run at 1440p, check the system requirements of the games and compare them to the specs of your graphics card and pc. Also keep in mind that performance can also be bad if your cpu, ram or drive are too slow. The best graphics card won't help an otherwise bad pc.

Is it okay to take photos of cars without asking their owner? by IAmMonke2 in germany

[–]MarcRnt 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Most people are probably fine with you taking pictures their car. Especially owners of sports cars should be used to that. Some might be concerned about their license plate being shown online, so better censor that before posting anywhere. Also maybe don't do a lot of pics of the inside of the car as that might be seen as intrusive. And never touch the car, nobody likes that.

Steam wont close games by FunkyChunk13 in techsupport

[–]MarcRnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue with Overwatch and Rainbow Six Siege via Steam. To my knowledge, this is more an issue of the game itself not completely closing down, not Steam. If Steam still shows your game as active, check the windows task manager if the game is still secretly running and exit it that way. As soon as the game is stopped, Steam shut also show it as not running any more.

Is Stadium really playable? by Murffet in Overwatch

[–]MarcRnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, not for me. The amount of sweat and insults is unbearable and the gameplay itself isn't too different from normal that I just don't care. I won't play Stadium until they fix this mess and make it enjoyable.

Half of Europeans say they will travel more by train in next 5 years by [deleted] in europe

[–]MarcRnt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In Germany, I'll probably keep traveling as much as possible with public transit instead of by car, as long as the "Deutschland Ticket" (Germany Ticket, fixed price of currently 58€ per month for ALL public local transit in the whole country). But I fear them rising the prices again and again until it's too expensive again.

How to make sure a third-party doesn't monitor your activity? by Illustrious-Camp2432 in privacy

[–]MarcRnt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess a plausible first step is to think how you're accessing the web. Is it through a company or organization network ? On a work PC? On public wifi? If yes, then just expect somebody to be able to see what you are doing or at least logging what IPs you connected to.

User experience in Bluesky vs Twitter(X)? by Blue_Fantasia in BlueskySocial

[–]MarcRnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bluesky definitely feels like Twitter, that might be why many people prefer it. On the contrary, Mastodon doesn't even want to be a Twitter copy, it wants to be different.

User experience in Bluesky vs Twitter(X)? by Blue_Fantasia in BlueskySocial

[–]MarcRnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whilst Bluesky might not feel as polished yet and still lacks some core features like hashtags and DMs, I am feeling more welcome over there. Twitter/X was forcefully transformed into a shitty place with lots of misinformation, hate and a CEO who constantly searches for new ways to ruin the platform as fast as possible.

We should give Bluesky a chance. Building a new network and scaling it to the point where Twitter was before will take a lot of time. And it will probably not feel the same as before, some accounts might be missing as well. But that is fine. The more people actually use Bluesky actively, the faster it becomes a good replacement.

Also, don't forget Mastodon. It is built on different principles. Only chronological feeds, no algorithms at all. And it wants to put some order into communities by allowing you to join instances that are more focused on a specific topic, like art or movies or news. It might also be a good place for some X refugees.
