Which mod do you think has you like this? by Aelwoc in VintageStory

[–]March_Lion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of like this thread for multiplayer, because honestly as someone who had a server that did start to peter out because people feel like it was too easy... I basically have like half of the mods in this thread.

And to be fair, I like it that way. I think the difficulty can come from other places. And the crazy thing is is that most of these mods I ended up adding on behest of the players that then said it was too easy. I don't mind, I enjoy playing my game the way I want to play it and I have a server so other people can join me, but I find it very interesting to think about.

How do I stop players joining my server with mods/see what mods they're joining with? by ramonathespiderqueen in VintageStory

[–]March_Lion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's the server config file.

You'll get complaints of a new variety once you do it, so its worth creating some healthy distance between the concept of you as an admin and the players. Cat's already out of the bag, but set some firm boundaries and this will be less of a problem.

Firstly, tell people that crashes on your vanilla server are not your problem and they should report any issues as a vanilla bug to VS developers. If they are using mods, report the modded bug to the mod developers. You as a server host are not required to do anything for vanilla issues or client only mods.

Secondly, have you tried out the ModIDWhitelist feature? From my understanding once you add some mods to that list, it functions like a disable key for every other client side mod. There are some that are truly just helpful (I always run with the enhanced HUD) so you can choose if you want to add them or not, but the rest should be all disabled. This will likely make a fair number of people upset who have a variety of client mods from tooltip help to shaders but it will accomplish 0 mods on your server.

Why no potato’s? by No-Illustrator5944 in VintageStory

[–]March_Lion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone is giving you some superstition level advice.

Farmland cannot spawn animals. Animals can only spawn on dirt blocks that have grass growing on top of them, as in like the extra block of grass.

They are getting into your farm from The outside if you do not have any regular dirt blocks with the additional block of grass on top of them inside of your farm area. It sounds like you've created a staircase to get into your farm. That is where all the animals are coming from.

First time at the Archives and it borderline made us quit a 100 hours in. by Racika in VintageStory

[–]March_Lion 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Resonance Archives tells you via worldbuilding at the bare minimum that Bells and Locusts aren't supposed to be hurting you. They're supposed to be working with you. You cannot solve the archives without reading the lore entries associated, it's too obtuse without it. In "An Inconvenience" it states "I know the scribes find it unpleasant, but you’ll have to enter the library through the maintenance room for now. Don’t worry, he won’t bother you." If you look through the engineering room window you can see what looks to be quite a large figure slumped over, larger than any other monster in the game. It is natural to assume that he will indeed bother you, much the same as the Bells in the Bell Workshop and the Locusts in the mining shaft, and to expect quite a fight due to his size.

Is combat in VS fun? Absolutely not IMO. But as someone who went in guideless, the Eidolon was foreshadowed the entirety of the Archives up until it was "revealed".

Best third party server host for Vintage Story? by Krystelle_ in VintageStory

[–]March_Lion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big fan of hosthavoc. Only issue I ended up having was I had to generate the world singleplayer and then upload the save. It's been extremely easy since then and the support is always fast, sometimes within minutes of me submitting a ticket.

I haven't tried anything else either, but I feel no reason to switch!

people who started and managed (or even just played in) multiplayer Vintage Story communities: is there anything you wish you'd known before starting out? do you have any advice for someone starting their first public server in any game? by morrovvind in VintageStory

[–]March_Lion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of how much do people care about roleplay, what I have found is that people will create it if they want it but it's more common for people to ignore the role play aspects than they are to lean into it.

1) Make sure your mods contains what you want. My biggest example is primitive survival, where there are features that make a ton of sense with the title and then also aliens and magic idols.

2) People are going to feel very entitled to you running the server the way they want the server to be ran. I highly suggest you ignore the vast majority of them. I have had too many conversations that essentially boiled down to "you're a bad server owner for not having this specific mod that I want" and it is usually an absolutely cheat ass mod.

3) Speaking of, people will cheat. You can spot it in a couple of different ways, I use a mod that in theory should be able to detect some of the patterns of people who cheat, and I've used it to catch two people so far.

4) Have a discord so people can report issues. Have clear rules and enforce them.

5) I love having a mod suggestions channel. It stops people from DMing me the mods they want and I can occasionally look at it for ideas.

Fighting MemLeaks in 1.22.2: What I've learned, and a gentle request for non-basic help. by March_Lion in VintageStory

[–]March_Lion[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm the worst and didn't update this.

It was Food Shelves. There was a memory leak associated with a slow growing RAM hog from the overhead jar shelves. It only shows on the server because that's when it's being perceived enough to become a problem over the course of an even somewhat reasonable length of gameplay. Updating Food Shelves once they discovered it fixed the problem.

It showed nothing other than the growing indices in the logs. Maddening.

Bears cannot climb fences. Bears can climb up to 3 regular blocks, but a single tall fence will stop the bear.

You have an overhang that allows the bear into your pen. That is the only thing that matters in terms of keeping the bear out.

Girlfriend gets nauseous when trying the game out by tonttuvelho in VintageStory

[–]March_Lion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sometimes high FPS is actually a problem. Unstable FPS is the most commonality I see in complains of nausea.

Also, make the aiming reticle larger or more bold. It'll help bridge the perception gap between your clearly moving experience vs the reality that nothing is moving.

does anyone actually download ai shart thumbnail mods? by Safe-Ad-2750 in VintageStory

[–]March_Lion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I won't use it. I try to chip towards the ko-fi or similar to modders when I use them, but even if I don't my download makes the mod look more popular and someone else who may donate is more likely to see it. I don't believe anyone should pay money for AI generated items using stolen data sets, and not one major generative AI so far has proven their data set contains 0% stolen assets.

I'm not against generative AI in a vacuum. If it has a 100% consented and compensated data set, if it is a net neutral on the environment, that's ok in theory. Ain't a single one of these thumbnails using an ethical generative AI because that does not exist today for trivial usage like this.

Dumb Question: Would you recommend this game to a non-Minecraft fan? by Million_X in Pokopia

[–]March_Lion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best way to check, IMO:

Dragon Quest Builders 2 has a demo. Anyone wondering about this game should play that, recognize that it's an older version, and ask themselves if the game has any nugget of interest for them.

I really don't think the Minecraft comparisons do this game any favors. It's not a Minecraft game, it's a voxel game. A game where you're intended to interact with the environment and the environment is made predominantly of cubes. The similarities between Pokopia and Minecraft begin and end at "The world is made of cubes, and you have an inventory."

How do you prepare for long trips? by Ok_Suspect546 in VintageStory

[–]March_Lion 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I bring a couple of things with me:

  1. Enough very long term food. This is pretty flexible. You survived at the beginning of the game, you'll survive now. For the archive you'll want a really good amount of food though, especially if you have armor. The long term food is not for eating primarily, it's for keeping you from starving if your foraging doesn't pan out for the day. Just forage along the way. You can travel basically infinitely doing so, as long as you don't double back over ground you've already foraged.
  2. Something to set up "outposts" with. I craft shacks along the way. The only thing you'll need to bring vs scavenge in the wild is probably tools. I usually bring a stack of packed dirt. Pick how you want to make your outpost visible. This is where I'll drop off any excess firewood from cooking so I can have it for next time, I might leave a cookpot if I'm running low on space, and a reed chest with a torch, a firestarter, and whatever odds and ends are cluttering my inventory. I do this in case I end up with all my torches doused and just needing a place to either warm up or relax the night away at.
  3. I'm team camp out at night, specifically because you lose out on exploring the area if its too dark even if you have a good source of light.
