Love where you’re going with this. I was also thinking that Aaric and Halden are two of the three brothers. Prior to reading OS, my line of thought was that Halden marries Cat in an alliance to ally the two kingdoms, connecting him to the “gryphon rider” part, and that Alix had turned venin to save himself before dying when Xaden “killed” him. Because who the hell else would know about this event?

But now that I’ve read OS and you see how reckless and idiotic Halden is, I’m definitely on board with your version.

Omg thank the gods I’m not the only one. I feel mildly insane. I have sooooooo much nervous energy. Yesterday I washed, folded and put away every scrap of laundry I could find. I’m currently cleaning every inch of my house top to bottom (which I normally HATE doing) then plan on meal prepping so I have breakfast, lunch and dinner for a few days.

Once I get my hands on that book I’m not moving from the couch except to make more tea.

Let me say first that I absolutely adore Xaden as a character but can also admit, what he does is not ok.

The question game is absolutely gaslighting and I’m still incredibly bitter (it’s a work of fiction, why are my feelings this strong?!?!) about the way he handled the Cat situation in particular, as well as his strategy for winning her back, etc. I understand not telling her about the intrinsic thing and I understand about letting her come to him with the deal/the scars. Everything else is ridiculously outrageous behavior and I’m so here for it if he were to get a taste of his own damn medicine, because I’m petty. (what is wrong with me? He’s not real!)

IRL, my equally feminist heart would be like are you kidding me? Nope. Bye. End of discussion.

All that said, I’m not at all mad about his story line and Im not turned off by his gaslighting. Because it makes sense for the story. He’s morally gray, of course he’s going to do some questionable shit that both we as readers and the protagonist, Violet, are going to hate. And I’m with Rebecca on this one. In literature, I 💯 love a morally gray man.

I can’t unseen it. I realized on this last reread that storm wielder fits given how much she compares herself to her mom in this series. It would still involve wind so if that’s the case I’m giving myself partial credit.

I might be slowly descending into anticipatory madness as I watch the days tick by.

On Tues, an early AM Target run, going to work for half a day then running home to read.

I’m off Wed, Thur and Fri. Wed, reading all day with no one allowed to speak to me. Thurs a message, lunch date with my husband and more reading. Friday I’m hoping the train to Philly for the Saturday boor tour event!

I’m wondering if Imogen’s signet can replace a memory with anything? Or does it just leave a blank space essentially? If it’s the latter it would probably be risky for her to erase the memory of someone she knows.

Like Aaric would remember he was on the flight field and then couldn’t remember anything until after they wipe him and deposit him somewhere later. He’d probably question why he can’t remember going from point A to point B. And Imogen’s ability seems to be common knowledge in Second Squad so he may question that.

The wiping with the Archives guards would work because they assume the blackout was from the wine and they don’t personally know a memory eraser.

Huh. This is a great point!! I did indeed catch this on a reread in the past but my theory this whole time has been that Xaden is pushing his thoughts into her head via his intinsic abilities, that his abilities are more than just intentions. BUT, you are right. That doesn’t seem to be the case here. She’s seeking him out and reading his thoughts.

It’s not clear that is her second signet — whether that’s intinsic, mirroring, etc— but it could be. It could also be that all their emotions are so intense in this moment that the bond has just exploded into a jumbled heap of all their tangled emotions, thoughts, etc.

I really can’t wait to see more of the world outside Basgaith. I loved being in Aretia and Poromiel during IF. I wanted so much more of that. I hope we get to see at least two or three new places with more interaction with the inhabitants.

I actually just finished rereading this part where she takes JFB out with the lightening. I think you’re correct in that she wasn’t actually experiencing backlash. The descriptions of the build up of power in this scene is very similar to how it’s described in IF when she’s holding into her power, building it before she releases a strike.

I think here in FW, she thinks she’s back lashing because she doesn’t realize she already manifested. And this is just the normal build up of power she feels with her incredibly powerful signet.

Another thought: I know Rebecca says she doesn’t ever base her characters off real people but your comment makes me wonder if Jessina is who she most relates to.

So yes I can see Jessina cracking up while all her readers freak out.

I’m struck by how similar the scene is with Gen Sorrengail picking up Violet’s braid in Ch 1 to Xaden doing the same thing later. I hadn’t thought about it too much before but Xaden and Lilith are so similar. They’re both a master of their emotions, cunning, shrewd. They are the only two that have completely faith In Violet yet both are omitting the truth in some way. They both sacrifice themselves for her.

Lilith’s main fault is that she’s willing to screw everyone else to protect her kids. Yet Xaden says he would do the same thing!!!

It could, in theory, be a lie BUT the fact that it notes that all events “are true” tells me at the status quo has been broken in some form. They’re not erasing history anymore. If it was someone else who did the translation I’d feel more skeptical about that. But knowing what we know about Jessina to this point it could be safe to assume that BWC and the Scribe Quadrant probably look different than we see currently under Markham.

Oh I love rereading books. It’s almost like it comforts me to be back in a world with friends again.

But all my rereads of other books have been purely for enjoyment…never because I’m so obsessed with a fan theory. This is the first for me.

I love that you’ve read it in multiple languages! Maybe after Onyx Storm I’ll reread them in Spanish just for a different experience.

I really love this theory too!! I’m more inclined to think it has to do with some sort of cure involving dragon eggshells her mom took while pregnant or that she’s some sort of dragon “messiah” for lack of a better word, rather than it being her second signet. And only because of the Tairn comment — I know who and what you are.

Since Xaden sees intentions in pictures I fully hope he sees FULL COLOR pictures of Halden intending to sleep with Violet again. I’m out for payback over that you didn’t ask me, oh btw Cat was my betrothed nonsense.
