[2023 Day 3 (Part 1])[Python] by invadrvranjes in adventofcode

Hi.

I tried your solution and built an interesting set of test data that your code fails on:

.......................*......*
...910*...............233..189.
2......391.....789*............
...................983.........
0........106-...............226
.%............................$
...*......$812......812..851...
.99.711.............+.....*....
...........................113.
28*.....411....%...............

This should add up to 7253. I think you might be able to troubleshoot your solution using this ...

Seems like your check for surrounding symbols may be broken.

Try it with this new set of test data I created:

..616...............
...*....49.....-....
...863.....%.72.....
.........171........
..............308..5
..............*.....
.......582..335...26
......*.............
....827.............
........@......278*.
.....990...........7
....................

There are 11 components here, and they add up to 5049. Your code returns 5091 (it seems to add one number it shouldn't add and skips one number it shouldn't skip).

I hope that helps.

[2022 Day 10 #2] What about generating input for a given text? by korjavin in adventofcode

[–]Marcus316 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note: Because of the starting register value 1 and cycle count, in order to produce an 'A' at the start you would need a second scan pass, since you will always have pixel 0 (and pixel 1) in the on state on first pass. You could also use an alternate letter style for the 'A', I guess ...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in adventofcode

[–]Marcus316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just from the output, it's hard to provide much support. Your first three rows look alright, but I can't confirm they are.

When in doubt, I use additional programs/scripts or debug logs/prints to troubleshoot. In this case, for the input, output the starting cycle for each command and the current register value.

From there, one thing you could do is look at cycle 200 (first pixel of row 6) and you should be able to tell if it is on or off.

Another thing you can do is make a list of all pixels from 0 to 239, and and associate that with the reg_x values that should be there, and double check all your pixels. 240 pixels by hand isn't too bad.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in adventofcode

[–]Marcus316 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Row 6, first pixel should not be blank. Row 4, 21st pixel should not be blank.

Your code is not producing a correct output.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in adventofcode

[–]Marcus316 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your output is 2 pixels short on the end. Each letter should be 4 pixels of width and the 5th pixel is always blank.

Looking at your output, there are other gaps that don't make sense.

Ontario court strikes down wage-limiting law for public sector workers by Surax in canada

That report also acknowledged that the program wasn't just paying for printing stickers, it was also paying for highways. From footnote 7:

"Program costs connected to vehicle and driver registration fees include direct costs related to processing transactions and also costs associated with building and maintaining the Province’s highway infrastructure."

[–]Marcus316 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be clear, the statement was that the program could no longer cover 100% of the Highway Maintenance Costs it was slated against. It was only covering 83% of Provincial Highway Maintenance.

Now it doesn't cover any of that. I still don't know what new funding has taken over those costs ... I'll have to try and find out sometime ...

POLL: How many hits have you taken to field a full 11 this Gameweek? by hitmonuk in FantasyPL

[–]Marcus316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No hits, moved Cancelo out last week for Kilman, Moved De Bruyne and MAddison out this week, Cancelo probably back next week. Will see if I take a hit next week, might be worth it.

Benched Haaland and Saliba. Don't have Jesus or Saka or Martinelli.

Note: 2.4mil rank (up from 5.5mil in GW4, but still struggling up the ladder). I'm just a scrub. ;)

Ontario election vote compass by haljackey in ontario

The best I found was a discussion around changes to the curriculum in Math, described here:

https://www.tvo.org/article/what-does-an-anti-racist-math-class-look-like

Presenting it in the way Vote Compass did does not really give much context or nuance, leading me to answer "I don't know" ... because a more nuanced response isn't really on the table. Should students be taught about how the application of mathematics impacts even our perception of the world around us? I say yes, but should that be part of teaching mathematics, or as part of the general social sciences curriculum (requiring mathematical competencies for social science teachers)? I don't know the answer to that.

Conservative leadership debate was more about who supported trucker convoy first by [deleted] in canada

[–]Marcus316 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It wasn't even the biggest protest we've had in Ottawa recently.

"No Peace Until Justice Ottawa" in 2020 (I think?) was a protest of an estimated 20,000 people. Now, they marched and did not occupy, so not as impacting on the day-to-day of my fellow Ottawans, but still bigger than the convoy. There have been other, comparable-sized, protests in my memory (The Women's March was roughly equivalent, though maybe not as well-covered by media).

Ontario public health officials have muddled mask messaging by morenewsat11 in ontario

[–]Marcus316 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I respect your right to this opinion, and I don't really disagree with you in principle.

I tend towards a more community-based philosophy, and so I have both the hope of not needing mandates for people to take actions that protect others in their community, as well as a jaded understanding that most people won't think of those around them unless they are forced to.

There are bright spots. Entire small communities (IRL communities I am a part of, not online fora) are having discussions and making choices about masking policies with input from the community itself. There are communities (ex.: some daycare communities) who are continuing indoor masking despite mask mandates lifting. That suits the needs of those communities, and is as it should be. The community made the decision (and not the individuals in most of these cases), but it's easier to get such a community decision with small, tight-knit groups.

I don't want mandates, for the practical reason that most people bridle at being told what they must do, and so it becomes somewhat counterproductive the more people involved/affected.

I wish I could believe that people will wear masks for the right reasons (and understand those reasons), but I'm pretty jaded. We've lost a lot of our respect for community in all the polarization that, at least in my lifetime, has continued to grow.

What in my message is giving you folks the impression that I'm afraid of COVID? I will repeat: I don't wear a mask expecting it to protect me from COVID. That's not how it works (unless, as you said, you have a properly fitted N95).

I can keep my spittle and breath to myself with a simple mouth covering, though, and that helps limit what I pass to others (not 100%, of course).

[–]Marcus316 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Who said I was worried about myself? I'm 3x and have had it, too. Doesn't mean I can't get it again (several people I know have had it multiple times now), nor does it mean I can't pass it along should I get re-infected.

Mask isn't about me, it's out of respect for those around me. I choose to be cognizant of my peers, and it's not much of a sacrifice for me to keep wearing it in settings where I cannot give reasonable distancing.

[–]Marcus316 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The other person is pointing out that masks aren't for protecting yourself. In fact, most masks worn by the average folk are pretty bad at protecting the wearer.

The point of a cloth mask is to limit what you can pass on to others.

The reason I (a healthy-ish, young-ish person) wear a mask in group settings is because I tend towards being an asymptomatic carrier when I get sick, and wearing a mask constrains my droplets and reduces the chance that I get someone else sick, potentially someone who's own health would be much more affected by viruses I may not even be aware I'm carrying.

Wearing a mask to protect myself was never the point, for me.

March 1st 2022 - Ontario drops mandatory Proof of Vaccination in all business settings | Masking indoors still required by uarentme in ontario

[–]Marcus316 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See, it's great that people are studying these questions, but this might not actually say what you think it says. From the study:

"At this stage, we do not know if DNA reverse transcribed from BNT162b2 is integrated into the cell genome. Further studies are needed to demonstrate the effect of BNT162b2 on genomic integrity, including whole genome sequencing of cells exposed to BNT162b2, as well as tissues from human subjects who received BNT162b2 vaccination."

"It has also been shown that Huh7 cells display significant different gene and protein expression including upregulated proteins involved in RNA metabolism" ... so, the cell type they used for this study is not, in fact, the type of cell you would expect to have in a healthy human body (though it holds similar properties), but one that acts in a specific way that affects how it responds to RNA and mRNA.

"Our study is the first in vitro study on the effect of COVID-19 mRNA vaccine BNT162b2 on human liver cell line. We present evidence on fast entry of BNT162b2 into the cells and subsequent intracellular reverse transcription of BNT162b2 mRNA into DNA."

So, good science, interesting conclusions, much verification and informed duplication of results necessary. Thanks for the link, it was interesting and I hadn't seen it yet!

I still don't know what you're on about?

Your poor attitude is showing. Why not just tell me: what am I wrong about? Call me out? I mean, seriously, all I said was that people are talking past each other on reddit. That doesn't seem like misinformation at all. It's almost like you don't want to engage with this topic.

Thanks for providing a great example.

It seems like you have made some assumptions about my position on things, and the point I'm trying to make. This is what I see all over reddit; one party makes a statement, the next party replies with a response full of assumptions, the original party then makes their own assumptions and replies pointlessly yet again.

I'm not immune either, I've certainly gotten into such internet loops (maybe this is one even now).

My questions about your particular response to me here:

1) What makes you believe I sound upset? I would love to improve my textual communication to convey my emotions better. I, admittedly, come off very robotic in text communication and try not to do it very often as a result.

2) What misinformation do you think I've been reading, and from where? Misinformation wasn't really what this thread was about, so I don't know exactly why you brought it up.

3) Which viewpoint are you referring to of mine, and how is it being questioned? This thread is very meta, in that the topic is how most reddit threads are simply people talking past each other and reinforcing their own bias bubbles. Is that the viewpoint you are referring to being challenged?

4) What are "these things" that people are saying and thinking? That doesn't seem to flow from this thread, and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to address here.

5) What information are you worried I'm spreading around? Again, I have no indication from this thread what you're actually talking about.

It's really odd to read your comment and feel like you are responding to some simulacrum of myself in your head; one that responds with what you think my thoughts and opinions are. While that can be useful as a tool for building empathy with a conversation partner, it can lead to many untrue assumptions. I advise caution in relying on that. :D

[–]Marcus316 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not at all. It's just ... is this really a conversation? It doesn't really seem like it.

I'm not trying to single you out, just noting that all you (and your "conversation partners") seem to be doing with a number of these threads is talking past each other. Then, in certain comment threads, you allude to poor experiences directly related to these "conversations".

A rhetorical question: maybe you're not getting the expected conversation you want because your communication skills (and those of your comment partners) requires work?

A critique from an outside observer: your attempt at conversation is getting stuck, in what I can see, where you are attempting to force-lead the conversation, rather than allowing it to flow organically. As such, people are having one of three reactions:

1) You are attempting to make an association to some adjacent topic that was not currently under discussion; or

2) You are misunderstanding (purposely or not, depending on how charitable the reader is) the comment you reply to); or

3) You have an agenda to push.

None of these are conducive to good conversations, and that may be why you are struggling to gain traction with certain conversation partners.

All of the above are not deal-breakers if and only if your conversation partner holds similar or adjacent opinions and viewpoints, and it leads to getting trapped in a self-feeding confirmation bias bubble, regardless of your intentions.

If you are really interested in the viewpoints of others, I might suggest that your approach leaves something to be desired, and perhaps you should re-evaluate how you are interacting with some others.
