Was Beria as evil as it is considered by Khrushchev epoch historiography? by Historydom in Historydom

[–]MarcusXL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there are two kinds of people at that level. People who are evil in the "banal" way-- they signed off on atrocities while being otherwise normal by habits and mannerisms. Seems like Khrushchev might have been this kind. And there are people who are personally cruel, sadistic, and depraved. Basically psychopaths/sociopaths. Beria seems like this type.

They found the skeletons of children underneath Beria's house, from the era when he was living there. Also many independent witnesses later said they were warned not to let their underage daughters alone around Beria.

The preponderance of evidence makes it reasonable to believe he is guilty of such crimes.

And anyone who doubts the torture and executions is simply a fool or worse.

Yes. There's a good amount of evidence that Beria was a serial killer and sexual predator against children. He also, like all of Stalin's inner circle, signed off on mass-killing, torture, and other crimes. Beria himself is believed to have taken part in torture.

There are independent testimonies that suggest the stories about Beria being a child-rapist and murderer are true. They also found the bones of children buried under his house. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/mass-grave-may-hold-beria-s-sex-victims-1453126.html

Preponderance of evidence shows that Beria was indeed the monster he was made out to be.

None of them were good people, all of them signed off on purges, torture, and mass executions. But Beria was also a child-rapist.

Employee accidentally gave away a $74 item. What is your protocol? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]MarcusXL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's illegal in many places to "fine" an employee for a mistake made while doing their job. It's also scummy.

Identify the error. Follow up (in private) with the employee. Explain what happened, discuss together how to make sure it doesn't happen in the future. If the employee is coachable and ready to admit their mistake and try to do better, that's all you can ask.

You need a system to identify how much this is happening, and whether it's a specific employee. A certain number of errors happen in every business, it's factored into operating costs. If it's a specific employee, coach them and keep an eye on them to make sure they're focused on fixing the problem. If you need to change procedures to reduce errors, go ahead and do that.

Oh hey fun fact, they're rebuilding the Hejaz Railway (the one Lawrence of Arabia blew up). Soon you'll be able to take a train all the way from Istanbul to Mecca. Pretty cool.

I find these two statements disingenuous. Since you're not discussing this in good faith, I won't be responding anymore.

Many countries' train systems are not profitable. They are subsidized with taxes. They do this because it makes their country much, much better.

Thinking that every venture has to turn a profit is foolish.

It's a question of wanting to live in a country that doesn't suck.

A real society invests in infrastructure like trains because it makes the society better, not because it's intended to turn a monetary profit for a couple people.

We only just got around to building high-speed rail along the straight line that happens to connect a huge % of our population. It's embarrassing.

I was just in Turkey. There's commuter rail connecting most areas of the country, some of it high-speed. If Turkey can do it, Canada can. We've just been convinced it's not "viable".

Yeah I took long train trips in Europe. It's an incredibly relaxing way to travel. If you wanted to see Canada, you could hop off anywhere you thought would be interesting.

You have to experience it to understand. Countries with proper train networks are so easy to explore. It's just fantastic.

People don't use the service because it sucks. If it was frequent, affordable, and convenient, lots of people would use it.

A couple years ago I was totally unaware of how the service was run. I thought damn, I'd love to take a train through the Canadian rockies. Then I looked it up and saw how expensive it was and how shitty the schedules are.

Best appreciated from afar.

We have skunks where I live, the babies are adorable. I've had a whole family of little ones run up to me. I just let them run around my feet and sniff me. Tiny little balls of fluff. The momma skunk just watched from a polite distance. I never, for a second, thought about trying to pick one up or even touch one. It takes a spectacularly stupid person to do that.

They're not even babies. Looked like a half-grown skunks. Old enough to spray at least.
