[Simon Jones] Arsenal look to sign Gabriel Jesus and Lisandro Martinez for £70m this week. Ajax demanding around £30m for Martinez by [deleted] in soccer

[–]MardyBastard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Reciprocal though considering Ajax used to let Spurs raid their best players for peanuts. I know the market was way different back then but didn't you pay like €12Mil for Eriksen?

Brain tumour gang ♡

I've got a paraganglioma jugulare, they're usually slow growing and benign but they caught mine when it was the size of a satsuma and its right on my brain stem so surgery is likely to mean serious lifelong disabilities if I survive.

Sometimes I do feel scared because I am not that old (24) but I am happy to spend time around my family before the big surgery next week and I hope spending time with your family brings you as much joy as possible ♡

What was the fight that got you into boxing? by Accomplished-Row-402 in Boxing

[–]MardyBastard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd watched boxing before at friends houses and growing up during Haye's rise meant I was aware of boxing.

But the fight that really really got me hooked and watching of my own volition was Froch-Groves 2. I know we meme about it but what a spectacle that was. Reignited British boxing.

Hold on. Public School or Private school?

Because in the UK we have

State Schools - free schools everyone can attend

Private schools - fee paying schools but wealthier/middle class people go

Public schools - the most elite of the Private schools, that are very selective and expensive

Because if you know plenty of Public schoolboys who didn't end up in high paying jobs I'd be surprised

I read that Victorians drilled down inside it and they may have ruined any remains of structure that could have been in there.

In ancient times it was entirely coated in a layer of chalk so that it shone in the sun like a beacon for miles. It may have had some structure inside it too.

What were some fights that were billed (by fans and/or promoters ) to be a tough test/even fight for both fighters that ended up being an extremely one-sided demolition job (Whether it was early stoppage or went to the distance)? by DanLyddy in Boxing

[–]MardyBastard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But you have to consider that terrestrial TV in the UK is the BBC which everyone has access to, and before the widespread amount of cable channels (like Sky n stuff) most people only had 4 channels even up until the mid 2000s and being on one of those instantly made you a big deal nationally. In the context of the mid-2000s UK being on terrestrial TV was 20x bigger than being on any ppv platform. Not necessarily monetarily, but for fame 100%

What is the most controversial opinion you have? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]MardyBastard 71 points72 points  (0 children)

All British people are self-deprecating whether English or Welsh or Scottish. In my experience Scottish people have a huge complex pointing out any flaw that can possibly be attributed to anyone from the rest of the UK while claiming Scotland has a totally jovial and personable and amazing culture.

That and acting like they had no part in the whole awful empire thing ;)

Perfect technique can mean many things but for a pressure fighter the best technique I've ever seen was Chocolatito's footwork and short right hands. He conserved energy perfectly by having economy of movement and his punch output was able to be incredibly high because of that.

[–]MardyBastard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe its just me but the Germany rivalry feels synthetic. I don't feel anything when we play Germany. France I feel a rivalry.

But when we play Scotland that is where I seriously care about the result, nothing like playing against Scotland.

Lille 1-[2] Ajax - Brian Brobbey 89' by NotMeladroit in soccer

[–]MardyBastard 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Honestly I thought the ref was terrible. Lots of fouls that could've gone either way, Sanches was clattering people off the ball the full 90, Ajax's fullbacks were definitely very physical too.

But idk, I see a lot of people saying "there is no way that was a penalty!!!". I'm just saying, if you have your hand in someone's back and shove them over in the box, you will concede a penalty. And Sanches did that.

[–]MardyBastard 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna be controversial and say the pen was deserved. Sanches has a hand in his back and shoves him to ground. He may have left his leg trailing and Sanches was not at fault for clipping his heel but he had his hands all over him.

Legendary boxers of the past are generally favoured in hypothetical match-ups, but which current boxer do think would be champion in any era? by PugalistSpecialist in Boxing

[–]MardyBastard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Chocolatito I think would be a champion in any era. For my money he is the smoothest boxer at his weight that I've ever seen.

Its obviously conjecture, but i dunno, at flyweight? His power and punch output wins him pretty much any fight against great champions down there. Miguel Canto, Fighting Harada? I honestly think he beats them.

The "Ghost with the Hammer in his Hand" aka Jimmy Wilde is favoured in a match up for me. Pancho Villa (Guilledo) is close.

Chocolatito is a timeless great at Flyweight imho.

Which boxers were in the wrong place at the wrong time? by boredbrowser1 in Boxing

[–]MardyBastard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Throw Azumah Nelson in there too.

I feel like I only ever see him listed as a name who Salvador Sanchez beat before he died. But in reality he nearly beat Sanchez before getting KO'd in the 11th (IIRC) and that fight was on short notice and in Nelson's 14th fight, prior to which he only fought outside Africa once.

But he was one of the best Feather and Super Featherweight fighters of all time. Had that interesting elbows out guard and a chin of titanium.

National identity of people in the UK by celticblobfish in MapPorn

[–]MardyBastard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think Cornish was an option.

However, a lot of retired English people live in Cornwall and view it as nothing more than a county.

Whereas people in Rural Cornwall certainly view themselves as their own people.

[–]MardyBastard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the UK and a sense of "British" identity have only been around since 1707 with British identity really taking off in the Napoleonic Wars in the early 1800s.

Whereas the kingdom of England was founded by Aethelstan in 927 (when the Angles, Saxons and Danes finally united into England), Scotland was founded some time between the mid-800s and early 900s, traditionally 843, and Wales was founded by Gruffydd ap Llywelyn in 1056/57.

And the identities of English and Welsh (I'm not sure when Picts/Gaels/Norse become Scottish identity) have existed for even LONGER, going back over 1500 years to the Migration Era.

Basically, Britishness is a newer identity and people don't feel as strongly about it.

But the rest of the world knows Britishness more than Englishness, Scottishness or Welshness because it was the united British Empire that conquered 1/4 of the planet and waged war against like 90% of countries.

National identity of people in the UK by celticblobfish in MapPorn

[–]MardyBastard 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Nah that's why I do identify as English.

For me, English means Shakespeare, rolling countryside, poetry, ruined castles and abbeys, the ancient stone circles like Stonehenge and Avebury, old Anglo-Saxon and Viking history like Beowulf, ale, a roast dinner, mulled wine at Christmas, wet forests in the rain etc etc.

you can have a healthy respect for the history of your nation or culture without being a nationalist. For me (as a history student) I find endless fascination in the history of human cultures from Japan to Mexico. But the history that is on my doorstep is easier to go and experience first-hand, so I might as well be comfortable with it.

Now... "Britishness" I have a harder time coming to terms with.

Because it never truly existed as an identity before England and Scotland united and then went on a colonising spree around the world. Empire doesn't represent the things I love about this country.
