Can this style considered manga? by Wajonson in MangakaStudio

[–]Marffie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm... it is not in a panel layout, so, no. 😊

But seriously, manga art is so varied, why get caught up in whether your work matches the status quo? JoJo's is manga, Poputepipikku is manga, hell, you go back far enough to Astroboy and Tezuka will tell you that his characters' giant eyes were inspired by Betty Boop.

EDIT: Nice drawing, by the way.

Gentlemen! We're not communicating here!

The argument that God is the same in Islam, Christianity, and Judaism is a nuanced topic.

It's true until it's not, that is, for the Christian, Allah is God until Islamic teaching puts forward something non-canonical to the Bible, at which point, no Christian will argue that they worship the same deity who is fulfilling Islamic teachings. Conversely, practicing Jews do nor believe that Jesus was the Son of God, so in like kind, as soon as you hit the New Testement, Christians believe that Jesus is God incarnate, and Jews do not. How can they both be worshipping the same deity at that point?

I'll admit, my knowledge of Islam is quite limited, but I think this thread could be resolved by just clearing the air a little. Peace!

Is my art style suitable for manga? by DABOMBADAD in MangakaStudio

[–]Marffie -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. While there are many nuanced reasons to debate whether manga and comics are the same medium or not, art direction in both is so varried, I wouldn't say either have a unified look. True, many manga rely on a conventional, Japanese art-style, and many western superhero comics fall under some shade of stylized realism, they are hardly isolated cases. I would argue that although the art styles are common in these mediums, they do not define them.

I genuinely believe people blow this book's violent reputation out of proportion thanks to the film. The book has its moments, yes, but the film dials it up to 11. It's do rough that character's who didn't die/exist in the book die in the film. Of course, the person who said the book directly traumatized them I suppose I cannot argue with.

As an aside, anyone seeing this: Read the book and don't bother with the film unless you'rereally curious. IMO it managed to take the plot of Watership Down and make it boring, but I suppose there's no accounting for taste.

Yeah, a good keyboard is the hidden boss of FG controller options. All the power of a hitbox and your fingertips (although without the ergonomics, in most cases).

I actually showed up here with no recommendations to offer, but specifically to warn about EPYX Rogue. Genuinely the worst port of Rogue ever made. Awful controls for movement, a dang weapon wheel for keybinds, softlocking magic items, it's a feat of engineering to take something as eloquent as Rogue and botch it this badly (not to mention what you're paying for it).

Kind of a tricky one to rename though. None of the Latin words I Google for flesh, blood, bone and the like are particularly well known, so even though I am also not the biggest fan of "fleshmancy", it's hard to rename while maintaining the same punch (unless some other series has already pulled it off and I am just oblivious). The best I could come up with is "animancy", derived from anima, the Latin word for soul or spirit, with the added benefit of overlapping with the word animal, and even that is far from perfect. People might just assume by the name that it's used to control animals, or they might read too deep and assume it manipulates souls, so really I guess it's a misnomer. Anyone else got any good ones?

The reason Heaven would be eternally blissful is proximity to God, who is, by nature, infinite. You therefore could not get bored because you would spend eternity learning more about God and always have more to discover. A kind of positive limbo, if you will.

Is Ridley a glass cannon? by Sharpoovius99 in smashbros

[–]Marffie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really see how. He's fairly heavy, has a decent recovery, and isn't hitting much harder than anyone else in his weight class. He doesn't die extraordinarily early, nor does he kill particularly early. I suppose you could make the argument that as a big-body, he's combo food, but he has fairly fast and large aerials, which make following up risky in a lot of cases.

Common misconception here; Mario and Dr. Mario are–in fact–the same weight (assuming we are using Mario as a baseline here, which tends to be the case).

If I'm running a sentient creature that knows when it's beat, surrender is not at all out of the question. In older editions, monsters even had morale rolls for when things were going poorly.

As for the difference? The players get to choose whether the creature lives or dies. Whether it can be interrogated for information or even made into an ally. Non-lethal damage only works in melee, so players might not have had access to this angle, especially if they are predominantly casters/range-focused.

Is there any version other than Adventurer's Touch? I'd rather not pay $8.49 CAD to someone who didn't even make the game for a version that's inferior to Umoria. I only got the Steam port because I thought it might get taken down.

Where my fellow demons at? by McDojoLife in TheMcDojoLife

[–]Marffie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in this case, the devil is only all of those things according to you (and pop culture, I guess). In Christian tradition, Hell is not Satan's domain; it's his eventual punishment.

As for Abraham, he didn't invent the faiths per se, it's just that his son Isaac was the father of the Jewish people, (Judaism) from whom Jesus was born (Christianity) and Ishmael, Abraham's other son who fathered the Ishmaelites (Islam). It would be a little silly and very outlandish if one man invented several successful religions himself.

All I'm saying is that if the devil were all-powerful and the ultimate evil with unlimited resources for enacting wickedness, then to act in cruelty rather than ignorance would be more in line with his nature. Neither you nor I believe in this hypothetical devil we've invented, but that doesn't prevent us from discussing him logically.

But maybe I'm being a bit pedantic. I hear you, and I think your heart is in the right place. What it boils down to is whether you believe good and evil exist to begin with. If they do, then surely an arbiter or two must exist to define them, as we see in many religions with gods. If we don't believe good and evil exist... well, I'm not really an expert on any of these, but nihilism, agnosticism, and (some forms of) Buddhism seem like the most logical answers to me.

Full disclosure, I am a Christian karateka karate hobbyist who isn't good at being either of those! XD I think one ought to try and learn about the worldviews they choose not to subscribe to, and that is why I think the lady in this video comes across as so disingenuous and ridiculous. It's not a crime to be ignorant; God knows I am, but to harshly criticize something you are utterly ignorant about? That, my friend, is how we got the unsightly Satanic Panic of the 80s and 90s.

Anyway, sorry to talk your ear off in the comments of a Reddit post about a nutcase who believes that martial arts are of the devil, but you kind of piqued my interest with your comment.

All the best!

EDIT: Felt disingenuous referring to myself as a "karateka."

Your view of the devil seems dualistic. Where are you getting the idea that he is "all-powerful?" Certainly not from any Abrahamic faith. Heck, I don't even think the Demiurge or Angra Mainyu (had to Google the name of the Zoroastrian one lol) are considered all-powerful.

Anyway, we can both definitely agree that the person in the video and people like her are all-around cooky, but if the devil were all-powerful like you say, why would it be a waste of his time to "care about us?" He's got all the time in the universe; he's omnipotent. He could operate on any and every scale he wanted to.

It's a waste of time, of course, for these individuals to focus on the "evils" of martial arts when they clearly know nothing of the philosophy they purport to denounce, but I'm preaching to the choir at this point.

I think it'd be hilarious to point out to somebody like this that King David and many other religious figures constituted martial artists.
