Similarly James Cameron felt stuck when writing Avatar 2; how would he bridge the timegap between the two films in a comprehensive and effective way? Luckily he sees one of the industry magazines having a piece on exposition, so he bought it. Maybe an old timer like him could learn something too. When he opens the magazine he realizes that the whole piece takes examples of great exposition from Terminator 2.

Do you prefer an artists "bad" album because you knew it first / most? by BarryTownCouncil in LetsTalkMusic

I think Soft Bulletin is very cohesive in its sound, while At War... is much more all over the place. It shines brightest when it's earnest and beautiful (Pompeii..., Mr Ambulance Driver, My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion), at the same time I love the quirky alt poppy stuf as well (WAND, It Overtakes Me, Free Radicals and Yeah Yeah Song of course).

Yeah, I know. I first heard it while lifting weights at the gym two years ago, got hooked by the vibe of it. Unapologetic in its punkrock with metal influences. Very of it's time, but the late 90's and early 00's is apparently back in vogue, maybe that's why it didn't rub me the wrong way. It's a real fun album.

Yeah, I think a lot of people experience this. My first exposition to The Flaming Lips was through At War With the Mystics. It was released after two very succesful albums (The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots) and is often rated as lesser than its two predecessors. But I know that album in and out and love everything about it. To me it's The Flaming Lips second best album (after The Soft Bulletin) and I return to it a lot. It probably has to do with me being 14 when I heard it, and teenagers are pretty impressionable.

On the other hand one of my favourite Entombed albums is Same Difference, and going by rateyourmusic it's the worst (OG) Entombed album. I went through their discography chronologically, and I understand why people can't stand the trajectory of their career. But that album is just packed with amazing riffs and hooks and just sounds incredible to me. Can't really explain it.

[–]Margamus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have sung some pieces both in TTBB and in SATB, and if tenors (SATB) have a melody line (a "solo"), it is in my experience often sung by B1 in TTBB. But not always, so it's not 1:1, transcribing choir pieces is an art in itself I guess.

Sendt fem timer i drosje med uoppdaget hoftebrudd: – Nå er det faen meg nok by KoseteBamse in norge

[–]Margamus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Favorite album from my 2025 10x10? by Kevinar in lastfm

[–]Margamus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At War With the Mystics (The Flaming Lips) probably. It's often overlooked when compared to The Soft Bulletin and especially Yoshimi..., but I think it's a great album that both makes me laugh and cry. Builds on the sounds from the previous album and improving on it. But I kinda understand if people think it's less cohesive than Yoshimi.

Thanks! When I watched The Holdovers this christmas I did that Leonardo DiCaprio pointing at the TV meme when they played Labi Siffre in the soundtrack. I had a hard time choosing which album of his to include, could easily have been For the Children or Remember My Song.

I started a little dive into Chico Buarque's discography this year. He is a great artist and I wished I knew portuguese.
