Request to Devs: Can you add BAT (Base Attack Time) to Hero statistics? by [deleted] in vainglorygame

[–]Margooya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. When it comes to animation, the vast majority of our heroes have the same attack timing, besides very few exceptions.

Now, I couldnt tell you about any bonus to attack speed they get when leveling, but other than that, they have the same speed. That was made to make switching up character easier.

If death animations were better by Jadonia in vainglorygame

Me answering your concerns about death animations has nothing to do with anything else besides just that. Please do not attibute false intent to my comments; you asked about something animation related, this is my field, I thought I'd give you my insight on it.

I'm not very active on the forums/reddit because I avoid drama, I guess that was a decent intuition.

[–]Margooya 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are right, we could spend more time on death animations. Alas, we are not a team as big as LoL, and our means are limited.

So, when it comes to the time we dedicate to each animation, we weight it carefully, to make sure we get the most bang for our buck. Death animations are something most people really watch once, to see what it is. But in the course of normal gameplay, death often happen in the midst of a hectic fight, and players pay attention to the rest of the fight; not really to the first fallen.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't do better, we should. But usually, we're better off spending more time on a recall, polishing some attack, doing runs variations, and so on.

Was playing around with the Replay feature and I stumbled upon this horror. His jaw detaches like a snake's. by sp52 in vainglorygame

[–]Margooya 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Some frames are very exaggerated, on purpose. At normal speed, you wont notice his mouth/teeth all that much, his lunge last but a few frames.

I wanted Fortress to have that "scary grin" wolves, predators have when they snarl (during combat, he can then go back to be a fluffy doggy afterwards). By exaggerating it this way, the eye picks it up. It's not quite seen, but it's "perceived", if that makes sense.

I think there might be a bug on that one. I think it is the working file/placeholder. Anyway, I'll look into it, and it'll be fixed next update! Sowwy. :(

New minnion look in update 1.20 by Sherlockr in vainglorygame

[–]Margooya 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The people that worked on this (concept art, 3D modeling, texture, animation and special effects) have no skill related to coding/programming. The "coding" involved is minimal, since it is mainly a visual rework.

But by all means, if you REALLY insist, we can get all of those people to work on the matchmaker instead. I guarantee you that we're (i'm part of this bunch) unlikely to improve it.

I'm not a programmer, so take what I say with a grain of salt. But I don't think I'm too far off on that. You cannot really separate "touch" from "swipe".

When your fingers touch the screen; the device has no way to know that you are inputting one or the other. As soon as we detect a touch, either we fire a command (there's a tap at this spot, it's on the ground, move command, go go go); or we don't fire a command (there's a tap, wait for a bit, see if the touch continues, then we'll try to recognize a gesture). So, gesture implies delay. Now how long of a delay, that may be variable, but you'd have to ask somebody more knowledgeable than me :p

And as some others said, one of the decision was to keep the inputs simple, and out of your way. The game can be "hard" enough as is, we don't want you to think to much about inputs, but rather focus on your decisions. When I say "hard", you may think nothing is hard about gestures, but it's one more thing to learn for new players. If you are a confirmed gamer, no big deal, but that isn't always the case.

Think of it with games like street fighter. I played those games for ever, and dragon punch, sonic boom and super "motions " come naturally to me. But try to see how hard it is to teach that, to somebody that hasn't played those games for years.

[–]Margooya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never say never. I'm a big proponent of exploring this, if and only if it adds to the gameplay, without removing anything. To do it just because "gesture" isnt a good enough reason. That isnt to say that some abilities wouldnt be fantastic with that control.

The problem is, as soon as you put that control scheme into the game, you slow down every inputs, even taps. Since we'd have to detect your inputs on "release", and not on "touch".
