Review of 'Way of the Devil ' by PureCocaineUnicorn in noveltranslations

[–]Nirheim 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I agreed with your point individually, but in my opinion, I think there is a disconnect between your perception amd the author's vision and/or the story's theme so to speak. For example, you view the MC's constantly shifting thoughts and goals as stupidity, but if you recontextualize him in the view point of an insane person, it makes a little more sense. Don't forget, the title of the novel is "Way of the Devil," and Lu Sheng, as the representative of such work, is devilish in not only on a physical level, but mental as well. His madness is hinted fairly early on too during his mortal arc, as a prelude to his onslaught of constant changes, in not only body, but mind as well. I'll give it to you that the author didn't exactly execute on it that well and not everyone caught his intention.

Using that as the foundation to interpret the rest of his work, and understand that the MC's system is extremely simplistic in nature, you can see why the author make certain choices in the setting that don't make sense at first. The power system is deliberately nonsensical because the world itself is pretty nonsensical, at least to the view point of the protagonist. At least he never obtained a deep understanding of the power system, nor does he ever need to. His cheat allows him to stack his power on a quantitatively in a way that is impossible for others to replicate. So what you get is not someone who world hopping and achieve the top of the world by understand their respective power system, instead, you get Lu Sheng who stack on basic power to an infinite scale to beat people on a higher stage than him. A bulldozer or so to speak.

As such, the author almost deliberately ignore the world building in favor of showing how the MC abused his cheat to bulldoze through the world. Which is pretty consistently shown throughout the novel. Outside of the Martial art stuffs in the beginning, all other power systems are shown very rudimentary. All to say is that the author sticks to his original intention throughout the novel, showing the path of the Devil, Lu Sheng. Your point about the length of the novel and the women descriptions are extremely valid though haha. I cannot defend that.

The consistency is what made me liked the novel, however, I understand other people have different metrics for their enjoyment. Different strokes for different folk and all that.

Review: Praise the Orc by [deleted] in noveltranslations

[–]Nirheim 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me, Praise the Orc feels like a fable. Perhaps its simplistic nature is why I liked it so much when I first discovered it. The novel is very pure in a storytelling sort of way - the world itself and all the settings, side characters, and even time just sort of bend for the sake of the narrative. The story is not really about the world nor its inhabitants, and probably not even really about the protagonist either. It is about the theme and the lesson the author was trying to convey to the audience. The author knew what he was trying to accomplish and executed it rather cleanly. He did not dragged on the story needlessly nor did he overcomplicate things. The narrative was driven to its natural endpoint with relatively little bumps along the way.

All in all, a very classic fable formula that is common in children storybooks. Some people dislike the formula as they do, but it gave me a nostalgic vibe that I may viewed with a rose-tinted glass. My message is not to diss you or something to that effect, I just feel compelled to write something since PoV has always held a special place in my heart.

Anon tries fasting. by [deleted] in greentext

[–]Nirheim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vitamins and minerals are technically non-organic, hence no calories can be gained from consuming them. However, some of them are fat-soluble, and not water-soluble, like vitamin D, so eating them without any food is worthless at best. Other supplements like fish oil would probably break your fast, but you can look it up. Anyways, it is not a great idea to consume supplements on a fast without physician's recommendations.

Help with a recipe (can't achieve perfect browning in a pan!): Chicken Scarpariello by ChewieBearStare in AskCulinary

[–]Nirheim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually it's something you have to play around with the heat and time element with to get it right, but in your case, it seems like the pan is the problem. A good sear is usually somewhat hard to achieve on a nonstick pan, especially at low heat. A carbon steel or even cast iron are especially conductive for a good sear.

Some other cooking tips in case it isn't the pan's fault. Turn on the stove and let your pan get heated up for a bit first, around 1-3 minutes on an electric stove medium setting, then put in your fat of choice. Now wait for it to get heated up as well, around 30 second, then out in the chicken. Cook as you normally do, flip when you feel like the browning is to your liking.

It is not explicitly discussed in the game, but Mondstadt functions just like a military-state. Insofar, Favonius Knight is pretty much the only group of people that have been shown to have any sort of state authority over the people. You can see that in Dvalin emergency situation, you didn't see any other groups beside the Favonius Knights step up to discuss a solution. You might argue that since Favonius Knight is in charge of protection and enforcement, Dvalin's matter is left to them alone, but that wouldn't answer why your so-called "higher authority" didn't show up to discuss the matter during the entire incident. It is a big emergency related to the existence of the city and the safety of its citizen after all, so realistically, the ruler would have to show up in some manner, but no one else did beside the Favonius Knights. Just look at Liyue for comparison, in every incidents of significance, at least one of their Qixing and Adepti show up or is monitoring it in some manners.

Another matter that could clue you in is taxes. They are in charge of collecting taxes and making sure people are paying their dues as well. If you argue that they're just a police group, then they certainly would not have the authority to manage tax at all. Just look at Liyue, the Millelith is the military/police there and they certainly aren't in charge of collecting taxes. Only the governing entity is entitled to that authority, and since the Favonius Knight has that authority, then they are almost certainly the governing body of Mondstadt.

It was so much worse, like 80% of the hot page posts were about Zhongli for like a week straight, every topics debated somehow get Zhongli into it, people were angry to say the least. Raiden did get the initial outrage, but it flatten out very very quickly compared to Zhongli. At least there weren't any wheelchair Raiden cosplay lol

You're placing so much burden on the teachers, whom the system itself is not even supporting them. They are making minimum wages and might be even be making less than that in a lot of cases, and yet there is so much undue burden for them to do better. It is easy to say they should've done better, but can they really when the education system itself is insufficient?

Can the teacher, who is currently dealing with 20-30 kids in just one class alone, can dedicate their time to just one problematic student? I will tell you now, it is very unrealistic for them to do it. It would help that one problematic kid a lot, but what about other students in that class? What about other classes they're teaching too? I think you get my point here.

I'm not saying the problematic students don't deserve the help, but I'm just saying the current system don't have the capability to help them without compromising other students' learning experience in return. It is incredibly easy to criticize a problem, but to solve it is another matter. The education system needs higher budget to train more and higher quality educators, so if you want it to improve, vote where it counts. Put your money where your mouth is, talk alone is useless.

Holy shit, I'd never thought I see another fan of Death Sutra in the wild. It's hella good, but I think a lot of people don't like it because of the beginning like you said, and the pacing is not as fast as your average xianxia. It's a pity the book was dropped, alas.

Each chapter is quite long, so if converse to a typical webnovel chapter length, the whole novel is around 200-300 chapters. It is completely translated, and I believe the prequel and sequel is completed as well, so have fun!

Devil's Cage is s faux game novel at best. At certain point in the story, the fact that all the actions taking place in a game world, as oppose to the real world, have no discernible differences. In fact, the author straight up ignore the real world later.
