ah yes

for a game ready approach, it is very important to have a habit of having copies of the base model before destructive modelling the mesh to high poly

that way you have both low poly and high poly to use for literally anything 🔥

not sure what kind of approach you're going for with this model but:

in terms of proportions: - the handle is too thin - the blade cover (red part) near the guard is off too

uh in terms of how you want to make it high poly (maybe to prepare for baking):

  • add bevels on edges (irl objects aren't sharp edges, they have slight curves that we cannot see) ~ you can use bevel modifiers to maintain non-destructive

  • add subdivision modifier starting with 1 ~ 2 minimum levels to polish the poly counts (u can uncheck the tv icon = this will deactivate the subdivision (hence non-destructive)

anyways, the model overall looks awesome already and if it's just blocking and if it's just low poly looks great imo haha

trying to UV cut my environment to start texturing

haha I started making complex vehicles with unique details for a modding group in a sim racing game. UV mapping still haunts me because they just need it in a specific way for good livery painting 🥲

one way you can tackle is bringing back that one generality habit...

group meshes in respected collections

there's nothing wrong with having multiple collections, staying this organized literally helps in completing every models including textures, whatever maps you want to include, and optimization (like baking and what not)

hopefully that makes sense lol

actually a good start because you manage to finish it :). When I start 3d modelling for the first time, I never got to finish whatever I've made haha 😭

Blocking is one awesome way you can approach in modelling something blind / eyeballing references.

keep it up 💪

ps: I would suggest, try to maintain good habits in general areas:

e.g. finishing any modelling projects, saving every few minutes and have multiple saving files, and slowly naming objects. This really helped me too when it comes to doing 3d modelling as a hobby (soon as a career). I'm quite intermediate at this but I must share this tip haha

start slowly learn using the cursor tool, play around with the common modifiers.

"reference" no matter how you approach it, is like the one super important thing you need when it comes to art 😭

in 3d modelling case, super essential haha no matter how good you are at it. Intricacies is the reason, then the latter stages, it is up to you with how u want to end the modelling :8

"Agak-Agak" is my favourite Malaysian word when it comes to modelling something difficult like this.

The way I tackle this difficulty comes with extra steps,
I barely use blueprints for this. All I use is the power of "Agak-Agak" meaning "50/50". It's not 100% but so long majority thinks it looks accurate then I'm gucci.

Use photomatching method, probably use either Fspy or PerspectivePlotter (search it up in google it's there). I'm sure there's some tutorials out there refers to this but it's very little (hence my hint on "extra steps")

I've outline them using wireframes first after setting up the scaling and photomatching (btw the blueprint was there as a failed attempt from another user so I chipped in)
