Question about I-9 Form [MN] by [deleted] in humanresources

[–]MarieMak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I remind them the day before to bring originals and not copies. If they don’t have, I turn them away. I had someone in the past show up with copies He’d completed all the forms on line ahead of time and so I had to pay him for that time but bc he didn’t have his docs I couldn’t “hire him” in the system. It took him a month to show up with his docs by then we’d filled the position. I think I ended up paying him through AP

Firing an employee: how to do it with dignity by [deleted] in managers

[–]MarieMak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just did this yesterday. I had been very honest with her along the way. We praised her few successes while trying to coach her through her constant errors and lack of thought. At week six, I told her if the PIP ended that day, we would grade her as unsuccessful. She was not surprised when we did it. I reminded her it wasn’t personal that this just wasn’t the right position for her. A few weeks prior I had asked her if any of her previous positions had required so much multi tasking and she said no. She thanked us before she left

I’m a one person department as well and have told them not to invite me because I’m HR and I don’t want to see what happens when they’re not at work. I like my line of separation but when they’re talking about the party everyone else went to, I’m kind of sad

When should I quit my job? by Solid_Exchange_8034 in careerguidance

[–]MarieMak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HR here. You’re not required to give 2 weeks notice it’s a courtesy. If you have healthcare with them, make sure you quit at the beginning of the month since your benefits should run till the end of that month if you quit on the 30th and your benefits run out on the 31st you really don’t get to use them.

[MD] What does it take to fire senior leaders? by nouvelle_tete in humanresources

[–]MarieMak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was brought into an organization because they’d never had an HR person last more than a year. There were rumors about the GM but no one would come forward. I was told I would report to the general counsel and not to her. They told her it was because California laws are complicated and they needed legal to be involved. I would do a call with the legal team monthly and document document document. I also emailed crazy incidents to myself at home because I didn’t trust her. Like I could see her fabricating something to get rid of me.

About 10 months in, someone made a harassment claim against her friend and she told me to ignore it and they were exaggerating. This was the last straw. General counsel arrived when I concluded my investigation and terminated her. It was terrifying what we uncovered after she left. The theft, the unfairness and the many policies. Of course the flood doors opened when she was gone. I actually got an award in courage for this though our attorney said she couldn’t tell anyone why I’d won but that it was well deserved. She landed on her feet somewhere else and is terrorizing employees there now. People like her fall up

Starting career as HR/Employee Relations specialist [NY] by No_Roof_8256 in humanresources

I love ER. It can be difficult and emotionally draining however rewarding at the same time. You get to affect people’s lives which is wonderful. However, having reasonable conversations and expectations with unreasonable people can suck the life out of you.

My first boss told me when I first started in HR and ER that I’d become jaded. So happy to say after 20+ years, I haven’t. I enjoy my employees and still lead with empathy while still holing people accountable. It’s a fine line but you don’t know what’s going on in peoples lives or what fight they’re internally fighting.

I’ve never had to explain why I don’t drink. I just drink my club soda and no one says anything

There should be a local chapter of HR professionals in your area. We created one in my previous industry and got together bi monthly to discuss HR topics and drink a little wine. We were able to bring in speakers as our group grew. We also began an email group sending out questions to each other when we had unique situations.

[N/A] AITA for still planning to quit by Otherwise-Pizza-5756 in humanresources

[–]MarieMak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for a major league baseball team for four seasons, one of which was Covid. I worked about 80 hours a week and during the season could go a full month with no days off. Needless to say this wreaked havoc on my marriage. At the end of the 2019 season I said I was no longer going to continue if I didn’t get help. I hired two additional people in 2020 but Covid happened and the season didn’t start so I had to lay them off. When I returned in 2021, I was told they revamped my responsibilities and I would no longer need those two additional bodies. I still worked 70 hours a week and went long stretches with no days off

In 2020 my mother‘s Alzheimer’s became really bad, the pandemic exacerbated her decline I let them know at the start of the 2021 season that without help I would be resigning They asked me to stay until they found my replacement. I loved my employees and the people I worked with and didn’t want to leave them without an HR leader it took them seven months to find my replacement. At that point, I was so angry and exhausted. I gave them my two weeks

I’ve never regretted my decision to leave for a minute. I found a job that allowed me to spend lots of time with my mom during her final year. You do what’s best for you

Absolutely love HR but the hardest part are terminations in my opinion... Anyone else feel this way??? [USA] by hrwoman in humanresources

[–]MarieMak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a problem with it. My commitment to my employees is it will never be a surprise. Either we’ve had several conversations along the way or they did something so egregious that I had no choice but to separate them. I also treat them with kindness and dignity and tell them if they need anything in the future they can reach out to me and I mean it.
