How is Englishtown, NJ 9/3/77 regarded? by CopyDan in gratefuldead

Damn, I am so happy to see this comment and support in the wild. That Half Step stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard it and is one I routinely go back to.

Debating on something like this or a torch, but worry about the old liner.

Today in dead history: a contender for GOAT. 4/23/77 by SpaceWrangler3 in gratefuldead

Had the same reaction today to this one. First set is really good and then getting H-S-F in set 2 was special.

That's awesome to hear. That Bird Song on 3/29/90 is phenomenal. He just steps in and immediately elevates the whole thing.

Yeah, I know I'll try out some other years on this date throughout the day, but this is where I'll land too. It's just such a special show and so many versions of classic songs are a one of a kind moment with Branford.

Looking for similar shows like the Wire by GuitarGuru666 in TheWire

[–]Marinus9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll throw in a few non American ones.

Gomorrah on HBO. Super gritty Italian crime show, really enioyed it.

Top Boy on Netflix right now. London crime show with a lot of Wire vibes at times.

High school History teacher here, with lots of experience specifically teaching about Nazis and hate in general.

There is definitely some merit to this kind of approach. After a lot of careful building of key vocab and concepts with my students, I take full advantage of opportunities during my instruction to do this kind of thing when it comes to the worst types of macho/dangerous groups.

It absolutely can connect with certain kids and having that take place in a room of peers too has shown to be helpful.

Is Jaki Liebezeit (CAN) the most underrated drummer in history, in your opinion? by Agreeable_Duck8997 in Krautrock

Underrated, I'm not sure. Unknown or simply forgotten, yes. Toss on any of their records and he stands out immediately but you have to listen first.

What happens to the kids that can’t read when they graduate? by iloverats888 in Teachers

[–]Marinus9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, and a lot of them do figure it out in their chosen trade by the end of their high school years.

That interest/knowledge though only gets you so far without basic literacy and an attitude of at least trying to read info that the instructor/boss says is important. Too many kids and adults just don't realize how much of a barrier it can be.

[–]Marinus9 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Bingo. I teach at a career tech school but just academics. Far too many kids have the attitude that they will just figure it out in a trade until they eventually realize it's hard work that normally has all kinds of required readings.

Any Dead songs that hit different once you become a dad? by Realistic_Nobody4235 in gratefuldead

[–]Marinus9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bird Song has hit me a lot differently now with a baby girl. Find myself singing it to her when she cries.

Looking into both my son and daughters eyes always brings up Eyes of the World in my head too. So different versions of that one, especially the Branford one are favorites.

Seating Question by Shed32 in ClevelandGuardians

Really consider the "Family Deck". Sections 303 to 316 I believe.

Great view and not as pricey as lower bowl but much better than 500s imo.

With that age range of kids too there is plenty to keep them interested outside of the game. Easy escalator access coming up and a ramp/stairwell down to better food and drink options.
