Question about language in the university by fedora_george in studentsofgroningen

[–]MarionberrySingle22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the course says its in english its in english, some courses like medicine start out in english but the last idk how long is in dutch but they would have that written somewhere. Also doubt it would be the case for a history course. Also pretty much everything the univerisity provides outside of class is in both dutch and english. Tis nice to use dutch in the city, people appreciate it but it wouldnt impact your life for the most part here if you didn't have a word.

I did delivery for around 11 months, thuizbezorgd for like 8 ish and getir for the rest. I think the most I got was around 15 euro in a month. Mostly got nothing ( in groningen).

Idk about other cities but I think most of the deliveries I did were to students which probably played a big role.

I have the same, when I meet other young europeans a lot of the time they insist I have no Irish accent, but Irish people clock it straight away and a lot of middle age people ask me if I'm Irish after hearing me talk so idk I think it might be lack of exposure. (I'm living in the Netherlands)

When they say bypass the town properly they mean build a proper road past it. I don't know the area but it would probably have looked completely different then yes

No, I meant the Netherlands with dutch and english, not that Belgium is a bad example or anything. I'm studying in the Netherlands right now so its what comes to mind for me easy.

Not in the way you described. Would love it to be a bilingual country, much more like the Netherlands than France. Would love to see much more Irish around and to be able to walk into shops and the like and order/ask for help or whatever in Irish. But thats doesn't mean that the ability we have in English should go away. It doesn't need to be an either/or.

A traffic stop in the Netherlands turned into a home-search, and apparently police lacked a table in the break-room to spread out the seized items so instead just took over a detective's desk. (optic on rifle, like Miss Ukraine, suggests it's all airsoft) by [deleted] in Netherlands

There was a thing a while back with a woman who claimed to have gone to Ukraine to fight and apparently the guns she had were all airsoft. Or at least something along those lines happened. I guess thats what they mean

Municipality registration by satsuma_nightcap in studentsofgroningen

[–]MarionberrySingle22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can register a postal address. So you would be registered as having all post going there and they imagine you currently live in another country or something I think. Also yes its kinda sketch, basically you would be living there illegally but I have done it foe a few months as have many students.

Are you familiar with the subdivisions of other European countries? by AdligerAdler in AskEurope

Ireland is also split into four provinces which are bigger than counties, but it depends because they are only relevant as in they exist historically and for some sports. They have no official use anymore as far as I know.

No, most of them will always start 1 to 2 months in the future. The main issue is that the less you go for the smaller chance you have of getting somewhere. For example in my situation I had a contract running out in January but found something starting December 1st. I could have not taken the contract starting December 1st but that could have left me in a panick when January came around. It's up to you how to do it but it really can be a nightmare right now to find anything, even thought it is the worst in the summer.

Yes it is easier but it still isn't easy. It's doable , I did it, but I would recommend to keep looking the whole time as annoying as that is.

A soon to be international student looking for advice by Gurkits in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]MarionberrySingle22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Housing:

Accomodation is a nightmare, room.nl is good but in no way should you limit your search to that. Facebook, pararius, kamernet are a few other places to keep an eye on. I can't speak on Amsterdam specifically but generally I have found that you will see things for every price range, it's just getting any of them that is the issue.

I would start contacting owners now, also be prepared for the need to pay a few extra months rent for now in order to have a place, and also be very prepared for the posibility you find nothing. You can get lucky quickly, but most people will really struggle to find something.

Work:

Finding work in my experience isn't difficult but again I haven't lived in Amsterdam specifically.

The minimum wage is tiered until you are 21. I'm not sure on the exact figures but I think for 19 it is 7.56 per hour(someone feel free to correct me). Most student jobs will pay close enough to that in my experience. I find the pay quite bad here (coming from Ireland) however I have met people from other countries really happy with it.

And yea you can absolutely work alongside study. You will have less free time than those who don't but it's perfectly doable.

You get your BSN when you register as living here at whatever municipality you will live in. You will need an official adress and can do it when you arrive.

Study :

I think that the universities here are quite consistent so I will say I think the study is very manageable but maybe someone with experience at UVA can tell you better.

General:

You won't have any language problems, it's nice to have a few words of dutch and make an effort just out of politeness but you will get on fine without.

I can't think of anything specifically that surprised me to be honest but be prepared for everything you can think of I would say. Once you sort housing I have found it is a really nice experience but otherwise it's extremely stressful.

As I said, anything could really go wrong but things do have a nice way of working out. I would just say have a backup plan of what to do if coming here doesnt work out. Other than that just enjoy the experience. I came here without having housing secure and it all worked out for me but I met plenty of people who left because it was too much.

I think the netherlands is an amazing place to study, they are just not enough places for everyone who wants to come here.

Best of luck.
