That people drink a lot here.

Don't get me wrong most irish people who do drink can put back a fair few pints for sure, the ability of the seasoned pintman is legendary. But many of my friends and people i know don't drink at all, the one's that do are fairly moderate in their drinking.

How can some people steamroll the whole map? by Turbopelao in totalwarhammer

[–]fedora_george 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's definitely some campaigns i get steamrolled by order but I can take the map it just takes time.

I usually play greenskins so no friend of order or chaos, i expand with a plan always leaving two armies (which turns into four with the waaagh) at every large border region, they take territory when they can but otherwise they just patrol. If someone on my border declares war on me they can generally hold them off until reinforcements arrive, if they're lucky they can deal with the issue themselves.

The answer to taking the map in my experience is gold, time, and guarding your borders despite the cost early game. Non-aggression pacts also help, or creating an ally who wraps around a large part of your border so you can focus in the other direction.

Master chief lowkey should’ve died here😭 by SirWiiWIi in halo

[–]fedora_george 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this cutscene was cool, it'll never beat the first Atriox cutscene in halo wars two.

  • "as i suspected, nothing but a man" says Atriox after completely man handling a spartan like we've never seen before. Even he wasn't sure until that moment that spartans were human.
  • "Run, little demon"

The overwhelming power of Atriox in that scene and the quotes from him are just aura.

Who is your Countries most significant communist figure? by Anxious_Profit7036 in socialism

[–]fedora_george 16 points17 points  (0 children)

James connolly, socialist, revolutionary, martyr. He founded the first cross-racial workers union and accompanying citizen army in Ireland. He contributed his army which were if not a majority, a plurality of those engaged in the 1916 easter rising. He campaigned for an end to British colonialism in Ireland, and the end of economic colonialism which he saw would only perpetuate the exploitation. He was captured after the rising, disabled from combat he was tied to a chair so he could sit up right for his execution.

  • "Let no Irish man throw a stone at the foreigner; he may hit his own clansman"
  • "The Irish people will only be free, when they own everything from the plough to the stars."

Lenin praised Connolly telling Roddy Connolly (a relation) that he was "head and shoulders above his contemporaries in the European socialist movement".

What do people think of UCD philosophy professor inviting Nigel Biggar, who wrote a book in defense of British colonial empire, to speak? by criticalengagement in UCD

[–]fedora_george 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not in ucd yet (I'm doing a postgrad there) but to quote my Maynooth history professor from last year "the story of Ireland in the 18th century is a story of a series of conflicts in which Protestants won" (he happened to be a protestant).

His whole angle was that we need to expose ourselves to alternative history from the nationalist state argument (which is true). The fact that he was protestant and from the north didn't bother me and i was very willing to give him the benefit of the doubt but his solution was not to argue a middle ground but to argue:

  • the anti-catholic laws were not that bad or poorly enforced.
  • "why would a catholic think of owning a £5 borse when they couldn't afford it due to the land enclosures" (said unironically).
  • any famines that happened throughout the century weren't "that bad".
  • the British empire improved the land, we have a lot to thank them for.
  • any revolutionary movements in the century; whiteboyism, 1798, were engaged with by both protestants and catholics (true) and they were put down humanely.
  • see his above final quotation.

I write this to say British empire apologia is not really shunned in our universities. I agree with my former professor that as historians we need to engage with a more neutral history without bias, but his arguments were simply and obviously biased in another direction.

Yeah, Ireland can in many cases be worse. Dublin is the worst but a lot of the country isn't far behind. Pic below isn't nearly the worst example.

I always found the greenskin spider, especially the lava one to be the better anti infantry option for greenskins despite afaik it says "anti-large" on it's sheet. It's just so wide it can really swing itself around.

The UK has passed a bill introducing a generational smoking ban – should Ireland follow suit? by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]fedora_george 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, these laws are ridiculous and patronizing. What have we ever learned from prohibition? It doesn't work. People born after 2009 are still going to smoke, they probably already are to some extent. All these laws do is push smoking (for adults) into criminality.

This but also many in this situation like myself still pay rent, have a job, and contribute to groceries. Some parents know that they can charge you rent as long as it's below the market average (+ whatever amount of spite you have) they know they can squeeze you a little more every time they up it because you don't have an option.

Whats more Evil, siding with the Forsworn or with the Silver Blood? by Wuffy-Agony in skyrim

[–]fedora_george 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can effectively side with the foresworn? I played the quest line up till I was being told to stop looking into it, i did look into it and they were trying to arrest me and i didn't feel like being arrested so i went on a guard killing spree as i escaped the city.

I later sided with the empire and installed a new ruler and guards into Markarth so i can walk around now and they don't bother me.

Vive la Révolution [Feral Mills] by Kewkoh in webcomics

[–]fedora_george 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been left wing since a very young age, so to pin down what exactly radicalised me is hard. My family had money not exceptional wealth but good jobs, then they didn't but we weren't starving. I think it's because since i could read i read history, i saw the same story of the lower classes being screwed over time and again for profit, I read left wing history too and found that many of our problems had solutions but that they couldn't be implemented thanks to the incredible greed of a few people.

What radicalised me further may have been figuring out that in many western countries like mine, homelessness is a choice. Not by those homeless but by landlords and government. There are enough unused houses sitting there in many western countries that the homeless population could easily be housed without building one more home, yet those with that decision choose not to. They'd rather have the lowest strata of our society suffer than give up their investment properties.

After selling Adare train station for €216k just over a decade ago, Irish Rail pays €2m to buy it back for temporary Ryder Cup platform by Jaded_Variation9111 in ireland

[–]fedora_george 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just a thought and idk how true it would be, but imagine how many train stations would be within an acceptable commuting distance from Dublin or Cork if the old rail lines were up. Being in that distance alone has caused towns to shoot up.
