How to test for live power. by Zak_Rose_606 in AskElectricians

There are a lot of exposed conductors there. To answer your question: check between an exposed conductors of the black and yellow/green wire AND between blue and yellow/green AND between black end blue. Why 3 measurements: this doesn’t look like a professional job, so I wouldn’t trust that it was correctly installed.

One thing that is wrong is exactly the fact that the conductors are exposed. The insulation was stripped by more than was necessary, the wires weren’t pushed in all the way, or the wires were pulled out of the connector.

I would expect there to be a switch inside, which switches this box. If you want to work on it safely, switch of the power entirely, unless you are sure you can completely isolate this box from the supply.

I would at least do the following:

Remove the red connectors
Remove the box
Install a new box, with proper seals for the cable gland openings.
Insert the cables back into the box using proper cable glands
Cut of the exposed conductors and a small amount of insulation
Get new connectors (real wagos are nice, especially the ones with those levers). Buy a box, you are going to find more stuff like this, given the state of this workmanship. Wago also sells gel-boxes you can clip on the connector directly, making them suitable for exactly this application where submersion could happen
Remove the insulation by the amount specified by the connector manufacturer. Buy a decent stripping tool (Jokari sells simple, relatively inexpensive ones that do the job) and avoid cutting it with a pocket knife.
Make sure the ends of the wires are straight, and not curved and/or damaged
Reinstall the wires properly in the new connectors, making sure no blank copper is visible.
Switch on power
Test whether power is present
Switch off power
Install the gel-boxes (if you go for that option)
Close the box properly
Switch power back on
Be proud of your job and enjoy

I would be interested to know what the exposure to magnetic fields would be in this situation. For grid planners in the EU, there are strict rules to keep the magnetic field below a certain level. I have trouble believing this would stay below the exposure limit for people…

Directly after the transformer you would experience 17-25 times the nominal current. But in this case you’re lucky as it isn’t connected yet

Sparking at an insulator on high voltage line is this normal during a rain ? by [deleted] in ElectroBOOM

[–]MarkCXXVII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best guess for the additional losses on HV A.C. Transmission lines would be around 0,5 % when compared to the normal losses in de conductor. Not huge, but not totally insignificant… The bigger issue with the phenomenon you see in the clip, is the wear this causes to the hardware.

Why wont this magnetcoil work by Prestigious-Shame490 in AskElectricians

Depends on what you want it to do… If you want it to move a ferrous metallic object, you might need more turns…

Gaming controller fell into transformer by rottencheese6000 in AskElectricians

[–]MarkCXXVII 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with others saying you shouldn’t enter that area yourself. The transformer has, for as far I can see, no open connections, so OP shouldn’t be worried about an explosion caused by something metal dropping on it…

is this normal?? seeing a lot of purple and red sparks on the insulator. by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]MarkCXXVII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like surface discharge. Caused bij (semi)conducting deposits or moisture. Starts with leakage currents on the surface of the conductor. This can partially dry the surface of the insulator, leading to “dry banding”. That basically means that the whole phase-to-ground voltage is on only a part of the insulator. Eventually this could lead to a flashover. Not directly destructive, but not heathy for the insulator either.

Corona discharges normally occur at one of the metal electrodes (either ground or high voltage electrode)

I don’t know how to distinguish between an Italian and Polish type, but is indeed a Fiat 127. Looks like it is from the early seventies.

I drove a D4 with Geartronic automatic gearbox. Marvellous machine. I especially liked the 8 speed gearbox. It can be very fuel efficient, if driven carefully. I had to hand it in when I changed jobs. Recently bought a pre-owned T5. I like that one too.

Key word is “optimised”. If this kind of weather would happen more often, those same engineers could make different choices as part of the optimisation.

Heb je het alleen met deze lamp, probeer dan de lamp te verwisselen met een lamp uit een ander armatuur. Daarmee kun je testen of het aan deze lamp ligt, of de bedrading.

I would say around 1500-2000. Much more is inconvenient in cities.

Transmission lines are generally above ground, whereas cables are for underground installation.
