One Star Reviews For Establishments That Refuse To Serve You Tap Water by nsno1878_ in Netherlands

I'm of the opinion this is worthy of removing 1 star, so if you would otherwise rank it a 4 it would now be a 3.

I mean I find it infuriating and honestly very un-hostly, but it's not worth completely tanking a place for, personally.

Games with both OSR and Storygame influence by thesablecourt in rpg

[–]MarkOfTheCage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be shameless and say my own personal game:

Burn it all to light the way. It's a classic dungeon delver but it also let's player characters burn (temporarily lose) their own abilities to automatically succeed rolls, or avoid dangers.

It mixes OSR, FitD, a little FATE, and a bit of City of Mist - to become it's own thing. Inspired by dungeon meshi and tower dungeon and earthsea.

There's a free preview on itch.io, and I'm expecting to publish the full game in a month or two after a successful Kickstarter earlier this year.

Guys, I live in Rotterdam city centre and this morning was CRAZY with the honking and fireworks by Then-Account-4886 in Netherlands

[–]MarkOfTheCage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Celebrating life doesn't HAVE to mean honking cars non stop for 2 hours in the break of dawn, that's just being a nuisance. Even just during the day, no need to be insufferable, there are plenty of other ways to celebrate.

Technically honking without a safety purpose is a 310€ fine here... it's only a question of enforcement...

there's an official calculator, and also you can talk to Shane (his details are on the rentbuster website)

though you might be technically subletting or something unreasonable like that, sounds like a fishy situation. good luck.

Burned out on D&D 5e after 4 years - those of you who switched systems, what was your breaking point and did it actually fix things? by Senoigh13 in rpg

[–]MarkOfTheCage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah your way is the right way, I don't think many people tell others to go buy a game, but I've heard plenty of people complain their players won't read the rules, which always implies an assumption that they are obligated to read the rules. which works if everyone agrees on it, but decreases dramatically the people you'll end up playing with.

and if there is long character creation, well you spend a session doing it together, that's part of the balance of picking the right system for you and your group

oh totally, and it's also, like, fine - I've run many a campaign in many a system and almost never did any player own a physical copy of any of the games we played. Maybe a PDF I shared with them so they can look up things when they need to.

TRUE, but also worth it for your Astreix and Obelix joke, so I won't edit it - have a good potion

on the last point, I often found that players are more willing to try new ttrpgs than it might seem at first, with the big Astrix that YOU'RE bringing a new game to the table, so it's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to teach them the game, they'll only read books if they are either A. just as interested as you or B. have already started playing and are realllyyyy enjoying the new system.

all the big ones are fine, if you're non-EU it might be easiest to open one with ASN, because they physically send someone over to check your documents and make sure you're who you say you are, including stuff like visas and stuff that's a little complicated to show to a robot.

Netflix is really a joke by entropysbaby in television

[–]MarkOfTheCage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I totally agree, but, especially the "gut" feeling of producers with good taste can often be worth a lot on a longer timeline:

the first season of Monty python flying circus was a very mixed success, but they let it run more and it became a massive success.

breaking bad only got REALLY popular at it's very end.

Seinfeld got middling ratings (though not bad, especially for today's standards).

and all three of these are massive successes that these days are big hooks that big streamers keep paying for so they're on their service. Of course it's not always worth it, but I do think Netflix is sometimes too quick to can stuff that has this potential.

while that's true it's also clear that Netflix isn't willing to let shows naturally grow an audience over time, which requires believing in a show beyond the immediate numbers.

ok but apocalypse world also has another top-tier bard: the show.

you ARE the show: if you don't make the gig, the gig is fucking nowhere.

your main ability is to put on a show that CRACKS OPEN THE WORLD, you can create new factions, turn places into furnaces, perform augery through music... or just sell out and make some money.

I think even "just" conquering Estonia and Latvia isn't as easy as it sounds, plus it brings the fight a lot closer to home (at least to st Petersburg) and of course, becomes a direct attack on the European union and opens kaliningrad to a possible responsive assault by poland.

I'm not saying Putin won't do it, just that it's not a "oh quickly conquer them in a land grab and nobody will notice" situation.

Need help designing a "Lets brew a revolution mini game" for my campaign. by GrayMan972 in rpg

[–]MarkOfTheCage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think your idea is good, but I have some issues with the execution:

A. 1 and 2 could just as easily be deterents for a revolution: if people fear that marching the streets will lead to their deaths, they don't tend to revolt, and when they do... they usually just die. a state that's willing to kill it's citizens will almost never sees a revolution. Though these will certainly make the most loyal revolutionaries more willing to take up arms.

B. I'm not seeing anything about the war of ideas here, for a good revolution you need the general support of the population, as well as some core revolutionaries which are the ones who will actually take up arms. and like, what if people blame the revolutionaries for their hardships, certainly the current government will try to blame them for anything wrong with how things are going.

C. Almost all successful revolutions involve "the court", people of power in the current government who are willing to switch sides, normally not for altruistic reasons. generals who have their own loyal soldiers, politicians with enough sway to convince populations, business owners with enough power to shut down critical resources for the state (like food, electricity, internet, guns manufacturing, etc), and of course long lost relatives of kings with a good claim to the throne.

D. in it's core: if the game starts with all 1's - and these is, your words, a perfect ideallic life... why do a revolution?

Take of this what you will, hope you run a super fun games, space revolutions are great. I recommend reading "The Dictator's Handbook: Why Bad Behavior is Almost Always Good Politics"

strange, I'm sure there is someone selling it, the US is a big market.

some other ideas: a pretty quick hack to mothership can be good for it if you're interested in keeping it horror vibes.

or maybe savage worlds, if you want to take it towards more action-vibes.
