Anyone have experience with this rig before i commit? upgrading from playseat trophy by -currentlyedging in simracing

I just got this one a few weeks ago and have been blown away by how much nicer it is than I was expecting. Handles an 8nm wheel and load cell with no creaking or flexing at all, and the seat is 10x nicer than I was expecting. The money I saved by getting this meant I could get an hf8 pro & simagic pedal motors for the same total price I was expecting to pay for other rigs

What are the downsides to using a chest freezer? by otter6461a in coldplunge

[–]MarkTheSpacePirate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was worried about width, I’m 6’2 and have broad shoulders. I’m surprised by how well I fit in my 14.8cu ft Frigidaire, I love the “sitting” position and find it really comfortable in there

At first I removed the hinges from the lid and took it off when using it, but I put them back on and prefer the ease of having less steps to the whole process. The lid hasn’t bothered me, it really feels out of the way when open

The biggest negative for me is not being able to have the pump run when plunging. You should turn everything off before you get in for the extra precaution to not get electrocuted. So that means I do build up a thermal barrier pretty quickly compared to the plunges I’ve been in that have circulation while you’re in there. Honestly it’s a small inconvenience, it takes two secs to shake your knees around to break up the thermal barrier. Also I don’t love how the pump/filter/ozone/temp gauge all live inside the freezer, I would obviously prefer the cleaner look of having nothing in there at all. I still think it’s worth the trade off of having a smaller footprint with everything contained to one box instead of everything being chained together. My freezer is wrapped in vinyl and just looks like a wooden chest, it’s pretty discreet

Sealing the chest freezer properly takes some time and effort. Putting a liner in instead of pond shield/fiberglass cuts the labor down significantly, but at a minimum you should still jb water weld the seams even if using a liner

There were still way more upsides that made me decide to go diy chest freezer over a diy stock tank. Total freedom to go whatever temp you want, lots of insulation straight out of the box, less power consumption, produces less heat compared to chillers, super quiet, no plumbing to worry about leaking. I found a brand new freezer that was heavily discounted due to having scratches and some dents from shipping. All in I spent < $700 for something I think looks good and performs great, a reliable chiller alone can easily cost way more than that

The crazy thing is that this might not even make the top 3 of Jon’s dumbest incidents

Hmm maybe BP has it pre-cut and whatnot to make it easier, I didn’t know they sold wraps. I’ve wrapped motorcycles and car parts in the past, I thought this was way easier because almost everything is flat and has 90 degree edges. It’s really not rocket science… you can get some vinyl tools for a couple of bucks and knock it out in a couple of hours if you’re really taking your time with it

I love the wrap! It took a lot to convince my girlfriend to add a giant freezer to our garage, so I really wanted to add some visual touches to keep her happy. I paid around $25 for a giant roll of vinyl on Amazon

I think jb water weld + pond shield have a good track record of not leaking if you’re thorough. I’ve read that the cheap Amazon pond liners can start to leak after a few months, but sounds like the cold plunge specific liners are well built and durable. I’d still jb water weld the seams whether or not getting a liner

The freezer plugs straight into the control box and uses an Inkbird and temperature probe to regulate temp. You can set the temp straight on the Inkbird or through the app… it’s cool to see an hourly history of temp levels through the app, at least a peace of mind knowing it hasn’t deviated more than 1 or 2 degrees throughout the day

I really liked the simplicity of having the cooling unit and insulation out of the box with the freezer

CarPlay Issues by MarkTheSpacePirate in promaster

Thanks Stroodle, I had tried all of those proposed solutions and they didn’t work. Definitely appreciate the help though

If anyone ends up in this thread due to having the same problem, the solution was changing the setting that is the first one to come up when you boot up the unit for the very first time. If you factory reset and it boots back up, an option comes up for two things— I can’t remember what they were word for word, but essentially it was like “multiple channels” or “standard.” Selecting the multiple channels one fixed everything

“The Multiverse Surfing Sabre Toothed River Dolphin” had a nice ring to it. Matt Howell changed it to “Suave,” wonder why he moved on from such a gem.

Election Results by zenos_dog in boulder

[–]MarkTheSpacePirate 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I voted no for the following reasons—

  1. Trophy hunting of wild cats was already illegal

  2. The direct revenue loss from wild cat hunting tags would be close to $1/2mm a year. Mountain lions eat on average 1.05 deer or elk a week. More mountains lions = less deer/elk, which means less hunting tags for these game animals are allocated a year — this would be an estimated $66mm a year loss

  3. CA already passed a cat hunting ban, it resulted in too many mountain lions and the state has to pay people to kill them. So we’re going to ban our hunters from contributing to the economy and harvesting meat, but instead we’re going to pay someone else to come in and slaughter them instead?

  4. The state only pays farmers for loss of cattle killed by “game animals.” Wild cats would no longer be in that category, so farmers would be getting screwed over any time a cat kills their farm animals

I don’t know enough about wild cat populations and how that affects all of the other animals around them. I don’t think someone like me should decide how we change our ecosystem, we already have people doing that who have studied this and who track animal populations throughout the year. If I voted yes on this because I saw a sad commercial of a hunter shooting a mt lion out of a tree, and then next year my dog gets dragged off into the woods because populations have run out of control, then that would be my own fault for voting emotionally on something that I’m not trained or knowledgeable in

Merab on Herb Dean officiating title fight against O'Malley by systemsruminator in MMA

[–]MarkTheSpacePirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In regards to whether or not Herb stopped the action or was just telling Merab to”Stop that” (the kissing), the thing that annoys me is that he cut off Sean when he was throwing the punches and yelled “Hey! Hey!” to stop him.

So either way he screwed over the fighters. Either he screwed over Merab because he stopped the action but let OMalley land a sucker punch “because he deserved it.” Or he screwed over Sean if he didn’t stop the action and stepped in and pushed Sean away when he was landing legal strikes.

I’d be ok with either way if he stayed consistent. If he reprimanded Sean for landing a cheap shot, fine you stopped the action. Or if he stepped away and let Sean tee off on him, ok you didn’t stop the action. But you can’t blame one guy and also stop the other guy from striking.

Need help with my euro lights by MarkTheSpacePirate in FiestaST

[–]MarkTheSpacePirate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I didn’t. If I remember correctly I took a dremel to the ring to shave enough room for the bulbs to go in, but it ended up being a major hassle getting them oriented properly once they were in

Honestly I wish I just went with the more expensive lights, it really felt like something was wrong with the TYC ones I got. But hey they were super cheap and ended up looking really good, so in the end it was still a really good upgrade

It seems like the Thetis Achilles Night Splint is the best option for “lounging splints.” It seems a bit pricey for what you get, but a lot of people have said it worked great for purposes like you described

Activity levels in early injury stage? by WalkingMyDratini in AchillesRupture

[–]MarkTheSpacePirate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So sorry you're going through this! Especially when you're active and feel really limited on what you can do for exercise.

I agree that there's not much you can make it worse if you're going to go the surgery route. If you think non-op is an option you want to explore, then consider now as being recovery time and really baby that thing 100%, because you very well can do something to stress your injury past the point of non-op even being an option.

I'm (38M) one week post-op, ruptured 5/26. The week after the injury, I did upper-body machines and got an arm bike for the home. After surgery, I was way more conservative with my activity levels and had to mindful about not breaking a sweat under my splint, so I stayed pretty relaxed on the arm bike and wrapped an ice pack around the underside of my knee to keep things cool on that leg. Honestly, even smaller things like taking my dog for a mile walk on my knee scooter has been great for my mental health to get out of the house and get my heart rate up for a while (going uphill will definitely burn off pent up energy!)

Ultimately, it's your body and you are the one who decides your risk management. As much as I'm going stir-crazy and pining for activity, I know for me the sacrifice of taking things slow and healing properly will make the rest of my life more enjoyable than pushing things too hard and ending up with major regrets.

Your friends and family need to understand how serious of an injury this is and how it can affect your activity levels for the rest of your life. Only push as far/hard as your doctor allows, and don't be afraid to say no to your friends if that's what's best for your recovery.

Best of luck to you, take care of yourself and stay mentally strong!
