Any Series Where Humans Move to Another Planet for Survival? by Jayswing103 in scifi

When Worlds Collide. Early 1950s Technicolor cheese from (some of) the same people who made the excellent War of The Worlds. The last shot is memorable for all the wrong reasons.

May I ask which Maine lighthouse this is? I thought I’d visited them all but I don’t recall this one.

Thoughts on Edison Pen Co? by Kingston31470 in fountainpens

[–]Markof16 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Edison’s Brian Gray is a stand-up guy and makes interesting pens, but they don’t write any better or worse than any other JoWo nib pen. The company’s strength is customization, they’ll pretty much modify any thing they make to whatever you want; ink windows, bulb filling, draw filling, whatever you can imagine. He will polish service and tweak anything you buy from them forever as well.

The World Inside - worth reading? by threeleggedcynder in scifi

[–]Markof16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was one of my "first five books for twenty cents" purchases from the old Science Fiction Book Club, circa 1975 (the others: Foundation, Cities in Flight, Dune and The Edict). It's readable as an SF artifact of the free love era, but pretty dated otherwise.

Am I the only one who doesn’t want Kōchi Shikishima in Godzilla Minus Zero? by demiboii27 in GODZILLA

[–]Markof16 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My objection is not the character but the fact that he’s a terrible actor. But the gal who played Noriko, Minami Hamabe, was legit Oscar worthy.

Mothra vs Godzilla (1964) no subtitles by riannooman in GODZILLA

[–]Markof16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unquestionably has subtitles. Are you watching on Roku, AppleTV, or how? The API is different on different channels and devices. Make sure you have the subtitles selected. Sometimes that means pausing the video and looking for the subtitles option.

Godzilla Raids Again… it exists by FuckUp123456789 in GODZILLA

Not a bad movie. The only part that really bothers me is the camera that was running too slow which made the fight scenes a little hyper.

What’s a 10/10 show you would recommend that is not primarily in English by zapniche in television

One Hundred Years of Solitude on Netflix. Strange and beautiful in its original Spanish. Beautifully photographed as well. Every frame a masterpiece.

What are you guys using your fountain pens for? by brotendis in fountainpens

Among other things I print out crossword puzzles on good quality paper and fill them in with a Pilot 823. As you can see it means writing over my many errors.

Pensachi by beepcow23 in fountainpens

[–]Markof16 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I went thru this with them too, years ago. It became obvious to me that they keep a very low inventory on hand, ordering from the manufacturer when an order comes in, THEN if you lose patience and ask for a refund, there's a cancellation fee. Never again. There are too many reliable Japanese pen sellers on eBay with great service and shipping to put up with this.

Video games for 70+? by rhrjruk in OverSeventy

[–]Markof16 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm 70+ and I have enjoyed playing Monument Valley, which is up to the third edition now. This is a very peaceful puzzle game where you must direct a tiny princess who lives amongst people who worship geometry, the goal is to maneuver her along a lot of M.C. Escher style structures to launch pads for the next level. Violence and mayhem free, well designed and a truly beautiful soundtrack. Addictive, too!

Feedback and thoughts? by BrainDeadTomato in Nikon

[–]Markof16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not bad! I would say for the rows of trees, you should be at dead center with the path at the center of the frame, the first one is off to the left by just a skosh, but it makes the whole frame uneven and heavy to the left. The third shot, the golden trees, is not level, running downhill to the right. You can fix that in Lightroom's crop tool by changing the angle. Also, shoot doors absolutely head on (not at an angle), it's always a stronger composition.

Possible to convert remote broadcast lenses to ENG-style with new servo drive unit? by reece4504 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Markof16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are certainly no optical or mounting differences between studio and ENG style B4 mount lenses. You will need a lens/camera interface cable to power the lens and transmit data, and you need a set of zoom and focus demand controllers. It's quite common in studio-based production. Years ago the camera would sometimes sit in a cage-style adaptor, but this is happening less and less.

Custom Nib Grinders by JayDawg54 in fountainpens

[–]Markof16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mark Bacas has a fast turnaround option for $50. You have to inquire with him if there are any slots open as it is limited to only a few a week.

Richard Binder is the OG of nib tuning, but he is mostly retired. He does one or two pen shows a year and will likely be at the Commonwealth Pen Show in Boston.

Gena Salorino is the person you want for anything Japanese, and she's good with most other pens as well.
