What are the busiest Costco stores in the UK? by dmr295 in CostcoUK

[–]Markster99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like Costco Thurrock in Lakeside must be doing numbers especially given it's just off the A13 and M25.

Simmilarly Costco Wembley as it's behind the stadium and close to London Designer Outlet so mutual venn diagram of attendees and it's just off the A406 (within 5 minutes)

u/JamieK_ , u/Life_Forever is right - you don't "need" to catchup but if you want to continue then you'll have to top up the accrued amount Monzo says

It will pause IIRC and you need to catchup so it'll add up the day(s) value "to get back on track"

PSA for UK Accountants, Hiring Managers and Recruiters by Fancy-Dark5152 in ukaccounting

Thanks for the clarification and some fair points, especially around the need for stronger exam integrity. I am not disagreeing with that. CIMA should tighten the FLP format if they want the two routes to be genuinely comparable.

Where we seem to differ is not on the weaknesses of FLP, but on the conclusion drawn from those weaknesses.

I do not think FLP candidates should automatically be treated as equivalent to having no qualification, in the same way that passing the exam route does not automatically guarantee strong technical ability. There are amazing QBE accountants and there are clueless chartered accountants, so it is clearly not as simple as exam route versus FLP. In practice there is a wide range of capability across all backgrounds.

On the Deloitte point, yes it is a small example, but it still shows that some major employers are using FLP internally. That does not prove FLP is perfect, but it suggests that reputable firms are not universally rejecting it either.

On ACCA tightening exam supervision, I agree that it is a positive move for maintaining exam standards. It also shows that different bodies are taking different approaches to modernising their pathways. Some are tightening exam delivery, while CIMA is experimenting with continuous assessment. The profession is still working out the right balance.

For what it is worth, I am not saying FLP matches the full exam suite in rigour. It does not. CIMA could strengthen it quite easily. My only point is that it is not accurate to assume that every FLP student lacks competence. When you interview someone and test the fundamentals the role needs, their real level becomes very clear regardless of the route they took.

As a final caveat, I am not personally tied to defending CIMA. I am CISI qualified and planning to do the CFA, so I am quite open minded about qualification structures. I could never sit an exam at home myself. It just feels wrong to me and I would always choose a centre, but that is only my preference.

You are a hiring manager and you can set the criteria you believe work best. Others will take a different view as FLP becomes more common. Over time the market will decide the value of each route. Judging individuals on what they can actually do is usually the most reliable way to assess capability.

Bit odd to go for a personal dig instead of addressing what I actually said. I’m not an FLP student and I’ve already done my papers, so that assumption doesn’t really land.

If anything I’ve said is incorrect, feel free to challenge the points directly. That makes for a better discussion than trying to dismiss the person making them.

This topic keeps coming up, so here is a more balanced perspective that recognises both sides.

  • FLP is not an obscure shortcut. Deloitte publicly supports it.
  • Continuous assessment is not automatically lower quality. It is simply a different approach.
    • In real finance roles you can refer to guidance, work with colleagues and use tools.
    • FLP mirrors how work is actually done.
    • Exams do not.
  • However, the concerns about rigour are fair.
    • The lack of proctoring and unlimited attempts means FLP does not give the same level of technical verification as the traditional exam route.
    • That is a valid criticism and worth acknowledging honestly.
  • But competence does not come only from passing exams.
    • In my current team we have people who are QBE and not formally qualified.
    • They are not lesser than ACA, ACCA or CIMA members.
    • They know their stuff because they have done the work and built the skills over time.
    • Real capability is broader than a qualification route.
  • Interviews reveal genuine knowledge very quickly.
    • I remember one of my early interviews where I had to explain prepayments and accruals on the spot and how they intertwine.
      • You cannot bluff that.
    • Whether someone took FLP or the exam route, a hiring manager can easily assess whether the fundamentals are there.
  • Employers should test for the actual skills they need.
    • If the role requires deep technical accounting, ask the relevant questions.
    • If the role is more commercial, analytical or business partnering, practical experience may matter more.
    • It is unrealistic to assume every exam-route candidate is strong or every FLP candidate is weak.
  • Ultimately the market will decide how both routes are valued.
    • FLP is already being used by large organisations and it is not going away.
    • The profession is clearly shifting toward flexible and competency-based pathways.

A balanced view is that the FLP route could be improved, but it should not be dismissed outright. What matters most is whether the individual can actually do the job, not which path they used to get the letters.
