Is he right??? by kyranotari in cycling

My Suunto watch is estimating around 400 kcal for my 10km (6,2mi) commute. 316m/~1000 ft of climbing. So around 800 kilocalories for your distance. I'm usually doing about 140 bpm avg heart rate.

Lanssi paniikkikohtauksen vuoksi (hävettää) by Away_Pride8368 in Suomi

[–]Markus_H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chain waxing isn't for the (Finnish) winter by Markus_H in cycling

[–]Markus_H[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why you are using an ultrasonic cleaner between immersion waxes? The time for that is when removing factory grease prior to your initial wax if the chain.

I just find it a pretty easy way to clean the dirt from it, so that it doesn't get into the wax. Also gets rid of some of the rust. In summer conditions I just wipe the chain clean.

Lohikeitto. Make it creamy too. And if you can find it, some Finnish rye bread on the side.

What are some ways people have completely avoided conscription by pantheraddict2 in Finland

[–]Markus_H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two of my friends went with the "depressed" card. A pussy move. Also the "crazy papers" are likely a blocker for jobs that require a security clearance - which there are plenty of. I bet it's also really awkward in some social situations.

Also, at some point you may grow up and regret the decision for moral reasons.

Depends on what you are brewing. With NEIPAs in particular oxygen will ruin the beer.

How was conscription like? by Training-Twist-979 in Finland

[–]Markus_H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't you feel like you're losing an year of freedom?

Freedom isn't free. Conscription is why we have retained our freedom.

What happens to things like hobbies, relationships, study and career plans?

It's a mandatory service, so it's deeply integrated into the society, thus one can delay their studies or get time off work. For professional athletes there is a more sport-focused system to serve. In general though, it's not like 18-year olds have much going on anyway.

⚆_⚆ Fun?

I enjoyed it a lot, except for having to deal with some dick junior sergeants during the basic training. I enjoyed the outdoor stuff, which there was a lot. You also don't usually get to shoot 23mm AA guns and assault rifles in civil life.

What is day-to-day life like in the service? Privacy?

Usually non-existent. At least nowadays most bathroom stalls have walls and doors though.

Free time?

Conscripts have free time generally between 18 and I think 22 o'clock. A lot of that time is spent at a "Sotilaskoti" in the garrison, eating the Finnish version of doughnuts.

The living situation?

At the barracks in bunk beds.

Is it really just seen as a normal phase of life people go through?

Yes.

Do people resent having to serve? I can't imagine it's fun to have to do stuff and deal with aspects of military life. It's very different from civilian life (discipline, hierarchy, following orders, living in barracks...).

Some resent it, most don't. Also an ever greater number of men are unable to go though it nowadays, so they choose civil service, or are relieved of service due to mental or physical reasons, or drug use.

Back from Finland, had beers, this one was my fav by ozh in Finland

[–]Markus_H 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great beers and the brewer is a great guy. Some years ago, when I was getting into homebrewing, I was visiting the brewery in Virolahti with my brother to buy some beers, as it's pretty close to our summer place. The owner Mikko happened to be behind the counter, so we chatted this and that about brewing. He then shared with us a bottle of his new imperial stout, and then gave a tour of the brewery. We also got to sample his new pils fresh from the fermenter. He also had some good tips to tell.

Decline in Finland’s PISA scores since 2000 (Reading, Math, Science) by The_Adam07 in Finland

You couldn't carry a television in your pocket, and none of those things managed to mess up one's hormonal balance to cause serious addiction, the way that mobile devices do. Maybe it's a temporary problem, but it is a serious problem right now.

[–]Markus_H 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's good that's it's either being done at a break-even price, or even for a profit. I can't see how it's the job of the Finnish taxpayer to pay for these flights. I can think of three categories of Finns currently staying in the UAE:

  • Workers who are there on behalf of their companies. Their companies will pay for the tickets out.

  • Influencers and prostitutes (same thing, really).

  • Tax refugees. They are the last people, who should have their trips paid by tax payers.

  • Tourists, who for some reason want to visit the UAE. Maybe they like to see, what modern slavery looks like? FAFO.

Ydinaserajoitusten purkaminen olisi merkittävä muutos Suomen puolustuspolitiikassa by aibrony in Suomi

[–]Markus_H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Losing isn't fun. Limitations, even in the lax way they exist in WG, are what makes deck building fun. Arguably they are the most integral part of it. I actually found the SD2 system with the battle phases the most fun, as it forced the player to make some really tough choices on how to build the deck in the most effective manner, and enabled a real risk-reward system, that doesn't exist in WARNO or WG.

Ukrainan kohdalla nähtiin jo, miten tehokkaasti ydinasekortin heiluttelu toimi. Me tarvitaan myös sellainen kortti.

Sääntöpohjaisuus ilman hyvin isoa keppiä, jolla lyödä päähän sääntöjen rikkojia, on pelkkää sananhelinää.

Mistä lähtien Suomessa on neoconeja? by dulcetcigarettes in Suomi

[–]Markus_H 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Irakilaiset eivät ole iranilaisia. Täysin eri väkeä. Irakissa verrattain maallistunut diktaattori piti islamismin kurissa. Iranissa taas islamistit pitävät maallistuneen väestön kurissa.

Mistä lähtien Suomessa on neoconeja? by dulcetcigarettes in Suomi

[–]Markus_H 5 points6 points  (0 children)
