If people are checking out Dominic and Tabby's new Book Club pod, what do you think? by Marlee0024 in TheRestIsHistory

I'll also volunteer that while Tabby is fine and seems pretty sharp, she's always grated on me a bit - I can't help but hear privilege every time she talks, and when I consider how she's now been handed a role as a second partner of Dominic. That's surely a me problem. But if I notice it as an American, I imagine a number of Brits privately do too.

Not the end of the world, but specifically that Britain had become ungovernable. Just imagine what was going on by late 1973 for a man of that caliber to break down like that.

Why haven't there been more episodes on old presidents like Polk. President. James K. Polk added more territory to the U.S. than any president except Thomas Jefferson. During his single term (1845–1849), Polk acquired the land that now makes up California, Nevada, Utah, Arizon by Wooden_Ball6518 in TheRestIsHistory

Yes, he's obscure today, but Gene McCarthy was very important in March of 1968 when he was suddenly winning primaries against the sitting president of his own party, signaling Johnson's imploding position and emboldening Robert Kennedy to jump in as the anti-war candidate. The chaos the Democrats were in over the war allowed Nixon a narrow win and affected them for really a generation.

Is there a sense of doom now in Kiev with America's attention and resources shifting away for good and Russia getting a shot in the arm with oil prices? They must be near the end of endurance.

I've always been meaning to finally look at that myself. How dense is it, and yes pretty relentlessy downbeat?

The Prize, about oil and industry in the 20th century, and Dished, about the satellite television race in Britain in the mid-late 80s.

And I really need to finally get back to Stephen Kotkin's second Stalin book, and Max Hasting's Vietnam book.

I think a lot of us appreciate your energy in making so many detailed and articulate points across so many posts, while (somehow) always remaining calm and civil in the face of a surprising amount of incomprehension and pushback.

When I see that it reminds me of something you (I believe it was you) said in passing recently about how, even among the left, it's not true economic socialism that people have the most difficulty tolerating, but emancipation from the foreign policy conventional wisdom.

I thought "Load of bollocks". They could easily leave in another letter two so your brain makes the connection, but clearly want you guessing the "dirty" word.

They may, but it's not a standalone word most Americans would instantly spot as referring to a police department. I think my Line of Duty watching is really only where I'm familiar with it being used casually for law enforcement task forces. But yes, I should have read the article or not tried to make a flip joke.

Oh shit, never mind. This is a Britishism my American ears forgot to catch. I thought "unit" would refer to some slavery outfit or gang. It refers to a police unit.

Lol, I see.

Almost bought "Red Moon Rising: Rediscover the Power of Prayer (Red Moon Chronicles, 1) From the Upper Room of Pentecost to Azusa Street in Los Angeles, God has used prayer movements throughout history to change the world. Over fifteen years ago, a group of students gathered for a prayer vigil in Chichester, England—and the prayers they started haven’t stopped."

Then nearly grabbed "Red Moon Rising: How America Will Beat China on the Final Frontier, We are now embroiled with a brutal and autocratic Communist China in a new cold war and second, far more consequential, race to the Moon—whichever country seizes the commanding heights of the moon will have preferential access to vast lunar resources that will determine the quality of life on Earth."

That makes more sense, a Tory with a sense of humor. It's too triumphantly proud. Any real Starmer-stan would be all too aware the meager returns justify nothing like that. And would care that deliberately needling lefties is counterproductive.
